PETERBOROUGH COMMUNITY NEWS UPDATE

Hello Peterborough Community,

September always brings a fresh start across our neighbourhoods. Students are settling back into school, mornings feel a little crisper and traffic around bus routes and crosswalks picks up again.

It is a great time to slow down on our daily commutes, watch for children who may be crossing unexpectedly and stay alert near school zones. A bit of extra care on the road helps keep everyone safe as routines shift into fall.

As our community eases into the new season, our team is preparing for several updates and activities. This month, we are sharing information about our October Community Connect events, the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, our fall emergency preparedness drills and how you can stay connected through our community Facebook group.

We appreciate your ongoing interest in our operations and look forward to connecting with you throughout the fall.

Kind regards,

National Day for Truth and Reconciliation

Reflecting on Orange Shirt Day

Each year on September 30, communities across Canada observe the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, also known as Orange Shirt Day. It is an important time to reflect on the impacts of residential schools and honour survivors, their families and their communities.

Throughout September, BWXT sites across Canada display Every Child Matters flags as a reminder to learn about the histories and experiences of First Nations, Métis and Inuit peoples. Our Indigenous Relations Committee encourages employees to wear orange on September 30 and to consider supporting local Indigenous organizations.

BWXT continues to move forward with its Indigenous Relations Roadmap. This roadmap helps guide our long-term work with Indigenous communities and supports meaningful relationships where we operate.

REMINDER: Fall Emergency Response Drill

Be Prepared

This October, BWXT will conduct an emergency response drill at the Peterborough facility in coordination with local emergency responders. BWXT regularly performs these exercises to ensure that response actions during an emergency are well coordinated and practiced.

All employees are trained in fire prevention measures, emergency response procedures, evacuation routes and individual responsibilities, supported by a comprehensive emergency response plan.

BWXT shares general drill information with the community in advance through mailers, banners, our website and our NEC Facebook group. BWXT does not publicly release drill dates or times, as doing so may influence employee response and reduce the effectiveness of the exercise. On the day of the drill, we will issue notifications that the drill is underway on our website and our BWXT NEC Facebook group.
