Sedrah:   Vayechi
From the President ...

Dear Members,
Many Jewish congregations lament the lack of young people being active in their communities. We read about the growing number of "Nones," young people who have no religious preference and belong to no spiritual community. Despite vigorous efforts at engagement, many are opting out. Some of us experience this in our own families.

Last Shabbat's Torah portion, Vayigash, focused on the reuniting of a family when Joseph revealed himself to his brothers, who had come to Egypt seeking food during a widespread drought and subsequent famine.
Those present in our sanctuary were privileged to see two of our families "reuniting" and worshipping with their adult children visiting from out of town.

Rebekah Johnson, daughter of Scott & Carol Johnson, who is studying at yeshiva in Israel, amazed us by chanting the entire parashah from the sefer Torah.... David Sassoon, son of Phil and Joyce Sassoon then led us in the Musaf service.... Amy Padva Young, daughter of Sherry and Ira Padva, read from the Torah several weeks ago, while visiting from Oregon. On other weeks, Henryk Jaronowski, a regular at our Saturday morning services, has read Haftorah as well as led the Musaf service.

No "Nones" in that group! Thank you to Rebekah, David, Amy and Henryk for renewing our faith in the future!
Please join us for dinner Friday evening at 6:15 followed by Shabbat services and the installation of the Board of Directors. We have a busy year ahead and need your support for the projects we have planned. The Kavanotes, Rabbi Waxman and Rich Weisman will provide the music -always a special treat.

And on Saturday morning, it's the anniversary of the B'nai Mitzvah of the Fab 5!   A fabulous kiddush luncheon is sure to follow.

And wait, there's more!

This Sunday, January 12th, Rabbi Kenter will lead 2 programs which you shouldn't miss:
  • 10am: Bible & Bagels: The 3 denominations of Judaism. Bring all your questions, and yes, there will be (New York) bagels!
And then at 12:30:
  • Neighbors in Conversation: "Where do I come from?"  Bnai Israel will host this initial interfaith discussion with St. Jude Metropolitan Community Church, our neighbors from up the block. This program is for everyone and anyone who has Christian friends, family members or coworkers. We hope to start an ongoing dialogue that emphasizes our common beliefs and increases both understanding of and respect for one another. Light bites will be served.

Hard at work last Sunday morning!

Barry Weiss, Harold Eichenholz, Mike Medress, Shai Abisch, Rich Weisman and myself carried 7 pews (or 28 half pews, each 8 feet long) outside and onto a flatbed truck so they could be transported to their new home at a church in Stephen, South Carolina.  The remainder of the pews (which exceeded the truck's capacity) will be moved in the next couple of weeks.   Lucky for us it was a sunny day! Bagels, lox and coffee provided the fuel.

We will still worship in the Sanctuary as we still have half of the pews and will add chairs until such time actual construction begins.
Shabbat Shalom,

The Three Denominations of Judaism
will be discussed this Sunday, January 12, at 10:00 am.
