October 2019 Newsletter

Community Ministry- A special thank you to all who came out to the first annual Bridge Ministry Community Picnic held September 7th at the Cotton Gin Pavilion. About 60 folks representing 5 Burton area churches attended to enjoy music by The Hilltop Ramblers and some great food provided by each church. There were also several fun games to play.  After all votes were tallied, Zion Hill Baptist Church received the best food award with Chicken Spaghetti offered by Ivenus Garcia and the best game award went to Emmanuel Lutheran with washers and bean bag throw.
Senior Ministry- all folks 55 and better are invited to attend our weekly senior luncheon each Friday from 11:00a.m. to 1:00p.m. Come out to visit with your neighbors and enjoy great food & desserts. Meals are offered at only $3.00 a plate but donations of larger amounts are welcome to help with the cost of the meals.  This gathering is held at St. John United Church of Christ, Burton.
Corner Shoppe/Store Next Door- Have you visited our Facebook page for the Corner Shoppe. Great bargains are posted weekly on this site. Each first weekend of the month is ½ price clothing. The second weekend of each month is ½ price shoes.
Manna Ministry- Mobile Food Pantry- The next mobile pantry will be held on Friday, October 11th from 10:00a.m. to noon. This will be the 2nd Friday of the month. Please let your friends and neighbors who are in need know they are welcome at this table. We look forward to assisting new clients and working with all our wonderful volunteers.
A big thank you goes out to Bluebonnet Electric for supplying our pantry the months of August and September with huge fans that kept our volunteers cool while loading food for our neighbors in need.
Children and Youth Ministry- high school youth are invited to join in BBAY (Burton Bridge Area Youth) an after school faith based program held each Wednesday from 6:00p.m. to 7:30p.m. We are in need of folks to help us feed youth during these gatherings. Please contact Lacy Eckert at leckert@stu.isdburton.net  if you are able to help with preparing a simple meal (ex. Hot dogs, chips). Drinks are supplied.
Did You Know?
  • Plans are underway for the annual Bridge Ministry Community Thanksgiving dinner held at the Burton American Legion Hall the Sunday prior to Thanksgiving, November 24th. Each year we host a silent auction to raise funds for our Christmas gifts and holiday meal baskets for local families in need. If you would like to donate an item for the silent auction please contact Pam Knebel at burtonbridgeministry@gmail.com or by phone at 979-289-2223

What Happens to All Those Donations?
BBM is blessed every week with donations of clothing, household items, toys, and more. We receive more than we can sell through The Corner Shoppe. Our volunteers sort the donated items, setting aside things that can be sold through the Shoppe. Barbara Donnelly, board member, is now selling larger items through our Facebook page. In just a month we raised an additional $600 for BBM from the sale of furniture. Clothing that is stained or torn is bundled together and sold by the pound. The remaining clothing, toys, and household items are sent to other non-profits. This is called paying forward. We have also donated to fire or flood victims. Recently, the Board approved a request to pay forward some of our excess clothing to a non-profit operating in the Valley.   As Jesus said "Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me." (Matthew 25:40) Our goal is to use all donated items in the service of Christ. Your generosity allows us to serve God by serving our neighbor wherever or whoever they are. Thank you.

WHY COURAGE?
This month, we are focusing on courage: being brave enough to do what you should do, even when you're afraid.
October is a month when haunted houses and scary movies are everywhere. There is a reason why we challenge ourselves to conquer that which scares us. While there is some amount of enjoyment to be experienced in the exhilaration of being frightened, the truth is, we constantly want to prove to ourselves and others that we can overcome our fears. That's the drive that makes us stand in line for almost an hour to get the front seat on the most daring roller coaster in the park! Your challenge this month is to lift up the ways in which true courage pushes us in the direction of doing what we should do.

WAYS TO ENCOURAGE THIS VALUE/SKILL:
    • Take that phone call from the irate customer when what you really want to do is put it off until tomorrow or the next day or the next...
    • Offer negative feedback in a professional manner to an individual that needs to hear it in order to improve his/her practice.
    • Try a new and challenging piece of technology when you realize it could be of great benefit, but it will be difficult to master.
    • Present something new in front of a group.

If you would like to participate, send an email to  Shae@brenhamtexas.com  for more information.
