AUGUST 2019
Monthly News & Updates
Well, it’s official…we have started the specific planning process for our 2020 conference in Philadelphia by confirming our first keynote speaker. Get ready for the IRON TAMER experience ! Iron Tamer Dave Whitley will redefine your idea of a keynote speaker with mind-blowing feats of strength (like breaking chains and bending steel) that serve to illustrate the points of a message of developing your own superhuman powers. Learn more about Dave in our feature conference announcement below.

Lots to do the next few weeks and months with C.A.R.E. voting proxy’s due, finalizing Connections Magazine, annual budgets, semi-annual board meeting, conference planning and membership renewal season. Remember, this is your association so please vote on the 2021 conference site and be sure to send any feedback about the future of C.A.R.E. to any board member. We appreciate, value and listen to your input whenever possible.

Last month I wrote to you about volunteering. We are still in need of volunteers, and honestly, we always will! Most importantly is our open board seats. There is still time to respond to that call of action and I will probably keep asking so you may as well go ahead and reach out to me now!

Time to get to work! Until next month, stay cool and dry friends! (That dry comment is for my fellow Floridians that are about to float out to sea soon!)
OVERCOMING BIAS IN THE
WORKPLACE & IN LIFE

By: Adrian Garrett,
Account Executive USA & Canada, DAE
When we hear the word bias, many of us perceive this word as ugly. We often think that the word bias can only refer to others, certainly not to ourselves.

Bias, however, is a judgement in favor or against something. It can be conscious or unconscious and can relate to a product, an ideology, and even a person or a group of people. Comparisons are usually considered unfair because the reality is, we are ALL biased, you, me, everyone!

So why are we biased? Our being biased is a mental shortcut, it helps our brain deal with information overload and it allows us to make faster decisions. The problem is that when we make those faster decisions about people, we are often wrong; eliminating potential opportunities for ourselves and others by allowing our unconscious biases to impact our behavior towards people in a negative way.

When you think about biases, we can be biased about almost anything. We can be biased about weight, gender, age, skin-tone, sexuality, religion, language, and the list goes on and on. The most common biases are age, race and gender.

The strange thing about biases is they can contradict our core values.

One of your core values consciously is that sexism and racism are wrong. Unfortunately, unconsciously you think men make better executives and people of color don’t make good executives.

In the age of social media, bias is especially prevalent because platforms like Facebook, Twitter, etc. allow (and even encourage!) us to find groups that have similar interest. It’s harmless and silly to join groups that love cats more than dogs, for example. Those types of bias can be fun! These platforms make more money the longer you are logged in, so it’s literally programmed to show you only things that it thinks you will like and align with your worldview. This can be dangerous because it can give the impression that EVERYONE thinks like us. It is harmful when we don’t expose ourselves to different ideas, opinions, and experiences.  READ MORE
2021 CONFERENCE FINALISTS ANNOUNCED
As mentioned in the May issue of QuickConnects, with C.A.R.E.’s transition from semi-annual conferences to annual conferences the association is still in the learning curve of change. We opened the floor in Indianapolis at the 2019 C.A.R.E. Conference and discussed why the board was not prepared to present the 2021 conference site proposals for a vote. We wanted to share some feedback and let you know the status of this very important voting matter.

So, with these challenges, the board decided to table the 2021 conference site voting until later this year and conduct voting via email-proxy.
After a comprehensive review, the C.A.R.E. Board of Directors has selected the two 2021 C.A.R.E. conference finalists. The finalists are:
