Mental Health Awareness - Youth
As mentioned in last week’s article, May is Mental Health Awareness Month. Mental Health can take on many forms and has many hidden and unhidden triggers. It is normal for children and youth to experience various types of emotional distress as they develop and mature. It is common for youth to experience short periods of depression that are transient in nature. While most youth are healthy, physically and emotionally, one in every four to five youth in the general population meet criteria for a lifetime mental disorder and as a result may face discrimination and negative attitudes. As with physical health, mental health is not merely the absence of disease or a mental health disorder.

Mental Health Awareness Month Legislative Open House
at our Rochester Office
| |
Last Friday, May 6th, CCSI hosted a Legislative Open House, the first in a series of open houses as part of our 30th Anniversary Celebration.
Along with local and regional legislators, CCSI leaders discussed the progress made in expanding mental health services, as well as addressed the concern that many communities still face barriers to accessing the services they need — these barriers becoming even more pronounced over the past two years with the COVID-19 pandemic highlighting disparities faced by communities of color and those living in poverty. The open house concluded with a press conference, which you can watch below.
Check out WHEC-TV Channel 10's coverage of the event here.

What Does Tribal Land Stewardship Look Like?
To understand Native land stewardship, it is important to recognize that it occurs within a context of repairing the ravages of colonialism. A new report, Models of Historic Tribal Land Stewardship in the Northern Great Plains, published by the First Nations Development Institute and authored by Mary Adelzadeh, examines these themes as it highlights efforts by four Native nations in Montana and South Dakota to restore stewardship principles to land management.

America’s Heavy Metals Pollution:
An Issue of Environmental Racism
Pollution of air, soil, food, and water resources has a variety of causes, including rapid consumerism, rising energy demands, unplanned urbanization, and the discharge of industrial pollutants into the environment. Such pollutants include heavy metals and metalloids, which are not biodegradable—meaning they collect in water, soil, and plants—posing a serious threat to human and environmental health.
