Safety Updates from Central County Fire
Presented by Dena Gunning, Community Risk & Resiliency Specialist

WHEN SHAKING BEGINS

* Drop down; take cover under a desk or table and hold on.
* Stay indoors until the shaking stops and you're sure it's safe to exit.
* Stay away from bookcases or furniture that can fall on you.
* Stay away from windows. In a high-rise building, expect the fire alarms and sprinklers to go off during a quake.
* If you are in bed, hold on and stay there, protecting your head with a pillow.
* If you are outdoors, find a clear spot away from buildings, trees, and power lines. Drop to the ground.
* If you are in a car, slow down and drive to a clear place. Stay in the car until the shaking stops.

Save the Date - Burlingame Citywide Emergency Drill 10/12/19!

The Burlingame Neighborhood Network (BNN) invites you to participate in the seventh annual  Citywide Emergency Drill from 9:00a to 10:30a on Saturday, October 12, to learn how to work with your neighbors in the aftermath of a disaster to support one another. More than 400 individuals participated in last year's drill.

The exercise is organized by BNN and supported by the Central County Fire Department, the Burlingame Police Department (sponsor), Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) volunteers and local Ham radio operators. There is no fee.

We received very positive feedback from participants who said it was a lot of fun and inspired them to get better prepared.
If you would like to learn more about how your neighborhood can participate, please email [email protected]. We'll send you more details and ask you to reserve two dates to learn how to do the drill:
  • Wednesday, September 25, 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Drill Walk-Through. We'll show you how to do the drill and give you all the supplies you need (no charge).
  • Thursday, October 3, 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Communications Workshop. You'll learn how to tap into Burlingame's volunteer communications network (powered by local Ham radio operators), which will connect you with emergency help even when most forms of communication are down.
You can read more about last year's drill and see photos on the BNN website here.

Millbrae CERT Updates
Marge Colapietro, Volunteer - Millbrae LEND-CERT,
Public Information Officer and LEND Radio Net Coordinator

Weeks ago I watched the movie "Apollo 11."  It was broadcast because 2019, specifically July 20 is the "50th Anniversary of the Moon Landing.  I recalled way back in the sixties watching the black and white television nightly news reports -- those remained in my memories until I viewed the entire movie.  It was like putting puzzle pieces together for the first time and re-living my sixties life all over in real time. It was so stunning to see Neil Armstrong and Ed Aldrin set the American Flag on the lunar surface then stand in awe.  Such emotional moments.  I said to myself "now I know why I love my Country, my Community and our Flag." Having celebrated the birth of our Nation on July 4th and recently commemorated the 50th Anniversary of the "Eagle's Landing on July 20th, let us be grateful, have trust, and know that we'll get through the challenges --  the best is yet to come and we will have a sense of peace once again.

"Greetings CERT! As we've transitioned into summer, I ask that you follow PG&E's instructions to prepare for any Public Safety Power Shutoffs. Please also have plenty of bottled water on hand. Make sure you are taking good care of yourselves so that if the need arises, you can help others. The kids are out of school and daylight is longer, please be especially mindful of little ones at play while you're driving. Please also make sure you are locking your vehicles and not leaving any valuables in plain sight. We are just a 911 call away if you need us. I, and all members of the Millbrae Sheriff's Bureau join with Chief John Kammeyer and Central County Fire Firefighter's in mutual efforts to keep you and our community safe."
-Paul Kunkel, Chief of Police Services - Millbrae Bureau

"As we move in to "fire season" CCFD would like to remind all residents that live in areas near wooded or open space areas to ensure they have modified potential fuels that could contribute to a wildfire to 100' from any structure. This would include dead or dry grass that is overgrown, dead trees or limbs. Any collection of dead vegetation or combustible material near or around any structure. It is best to ensure this extends about 100' from the structure, otherwise known as "defensible space." If you are unsure about defensible space or would like a CCFD Fire Prevention Specialist to provide you with a Wildland Urban Interface consult for your home, please call our office at (650) 558-7600."  -John Kammeyer, Fire Chief - Central County Fire Department

MILLBRAE CERT UPDATES

We would like to express our heartfelt gratitude to two truly outstanding women who have made every effort to assist us when Dino has called upon them.

Charlene O'Connell, a 20-year city employee who worked as a Recreation Coordinator for our city, retired as of June 30th. Charlene made sure that we had space when we needed it, ensured that her crew helped with setting-up the areas, had the doors unlocked on time for our Radio Net - Charlene always "made it happen" for us and for so many others.  We'll miss you Charlene and we wish all good things for you.  We look forward to seeing you at Millbrae events as a volunteer and enjoying yourself "like the good old days!"

Dana Sahae, the Executive Director of Millbrae Community Television (our Media Partner), has two young daughters who are at an age when they need to have more mommy time. Dana had previous media experience as a reporter for the San Mateo Daily Journal - known then as Dana Yates.  She learned quickly about the role of community television and made that one of her passions.  Dana also knew the value of Emergency Preparedness in a community, our community, and thru the magic of MCTV helped with video productions of many of our activities and included a CERT representative to be interviewed in the MCTV booth at the Art & Wine Festival. I have a hunch that Dana won't be a stranger to us. We wish all good things for you.
