Doheny Desalination Project Takes Important Step Forward!
Great news for the Doheny Desalination Project and the California desalination community!

On March 9, the San Diego Regional Water Quality Control Board unanimously approved the Tentative Orders related to the NPDES permits for discharge associated with operation of the Doheny Desalination Project. The action by the San Diego RWQCB represents an important step forward toward realization of this important local water supply project in southern Orange County.

The successful permit approval is representative of the accomplishments that can be achieved through amazing work by the project sponsors, proponents, engineering, and consulting firms, supported by our entire CalDesal family and community.

Calling All Volunteers!
The CalDesal organization is looking for volunteers for a range of leadership opportunities within the association. In February, the CalDesal Executive Committee approved the creation of a new Event Planning Committee that will be focusing on some of the great event opportunities that we anticipate over the next year, including the Spring and Fall Mixer events, the 2023 Annual Conference, and other events, seminars, and sessions that may emerge during the year.

We are looking for a Chair, a Vice-Chair, and Committee members to form this newly-established Event Planning Committee. We encourage you to consider this opportunity to really help the association in a meaningful way and shape the organization into the future.

If you are interested, please contact Glenn Farrel at glennf@caldesal.org or at (916) 216-1747. We would like to have an inaugural meeting of the Event Planning Committee in early April.
CalDesal Engagement
Over the past month, CalDesal has stepped up its engagement as the 2022 state legislative session begins to become more active. The CalDesal Executive Committee approved adoption of a Support if Amended position on AB 2016 by Assemblymember Rebecca Bauer-Kahan (also the Chair of the Assembly Water, Parks, and Wildlife Committee). CalDesal is actively engaged in helping to shape the legislation in a meaningful way to ensure positive, transparent, and accountable outcomes from the legislative effort. See CalDesal’s position letter here.

CalDesal has also communicated with legislative leadership, budget leadership, and the Governor’s office regarding its recommendations for water resilience investment using state budget surplus funds. The CalDesal recommendations focus on encouraging investments in ocean and brackish water desalination infrastructure, workforce development, and renewable energy integration for desalination operations. See CalDesal’s budget request letter here.
