CalDesal Engagement on State’s Ocean Water Desal Siting Criteria Report

At the end of July, CalDesal and its coalition partners submitted public comments on the State’sDraft Desalination Siting and Streamlining Report to Expedite Permitting,” which was issued as a required product from the Governor’s August 2022 Water Supply Strategy.

The public comment letter – which can be found here – highlighted three principal overarching concerns with the contents, tone, and direction of the report, and provided input relative to a series of additional areas that warrant further attention and consideration.

CalDesal is grateful to its coalition partners involved in crafting and submitting the public comment letter, including:

  • Association of California Water Agencies
  • California Water Association
  • Southern California Water Coalition
  • California Building Industry Association
  • California Chamber of Commerce
  • California State Pipe Trades Council
  • UA Local 250 Pipefitters
  • Southern California Pipe Trades District 16

CalDesal Welcomes New Members to the Executive Committee

We are extremely pleased to welcome the following to the CalDesal Executive Committee to fill two recent vacancies on the Committee:

  •  Christopher Cook – Director of Operations, Central Division – California American Water
  • Michelle Peters – Director of Operations – Poseidon Resources (Channelside)

Given the quantity and quality of the applicants for the two Executive Committee vacancies, it was not an easy decision for the Committee to make these selections.

When you have an opportunity, please congratulate the new members of the CalDesal Executive Committee!

Call for Abstracts – 2024 CalDesal Annual Conference

A Call for Abstracts for the CalDesal 2024 Annual Conference has been released, and the Events Planning Committee is in the process of receiving abstracts and shaping the content for the conference.

The CalDesal Events Planning Committee encourages you to submit abstracts within these broadly-outlined categories:

  • Desalination technology innovations and advancements
  • Brine and concentrate management strategies and concepts
  • Ocean water desalination projects and technologies
  • Brackish water desalination projects and technologies
  • Tackling myths related to desalination
  • Renewable energy applications for desalination
  • Reducing the desalination carbon footprint
  • Clarifying mitigation obligations for desalination projects
  • Cost, rate structures, and funding for desalination projects
  • Desalination and disadvantaged communities
  • Permitting/regulatory considerations (e.g., sea level rise, establishing “need”)
  • Management innovations and opportunities for desalination project design, construction, and operation
  • And more

The deadline for submittal of abstracts is October 27, 2023. We are anticipating a very crowded field of interest for participation in the Annual Conference, so the sooner you are able to submit an abstract, the more likely it can be built-in to the conference content planning efforts.

An on-line portal for submittal of abstracts is accessible here.

Looking for Volunteers!

At the February 2024 CalDesal Annual Conference, we will be awarding the inaugural DESAL Award of the Year in recognition of a desalination community leader for being an outstanding desalination advocate and for making material contributions to advancing desalination development, legislation, policy, or regulation in California.

As part of this new award program, CalDesal needs volunteers to comprise an Award Committee to review nominations and make a recommendation for an award recipient(s) to the CalDesal Board of Directors at its November 29, 2023 meeting.

If you are interested in being a member of the small group of folks comprising this new Award Committee, please contact CalDesal Executive Director Glenn Farrel at glennf@caldesal.org. The Award Committee will begin its work in September and will conclude its work by early November.
