10th Annual Firecracker Run Could be the Chamber's Most Successful Event of 2013!

FCR 2013

Here at the Chamber Office, we were stunned by the preregistration number of 154 on Friday as we began to prepare for the next day event.  Saturday morning, as we prepared for our 10th annual event, we had no idea we would finish the day with an astounding 197 participants! In the event's previous 9 year history, final participant numbers have never reached more than 150.

The increased number of participants has caused the Chamber to reevaluate a few minor organizational methods for next year's run/walk, in hopes of improving the speed and ease of scoring and to help shorten the delay of the awards presentation.  Regardless, we couldn't possibly be any more please with this year's event!

Having said that, there are so, so many people that is due recognition for this success...  Aside from our overwhelming appreciation to each of the event participants, the top three event coordinators, Debbie Bunch, Mary Lee Faircloth and Charlie Boyer are ones who deserve the most thanks.  Their knowledge, hard work and dedication to this event is what makes it one of the best around.

Next, the many, many volunteers -- we certainly couldn't do this without each and every one of you.  The time you devoted to this event is priceless in our eyes.

The Police, street department and of course the City of Park Hills.  We appreciate you not only allowing us to literally take over the streets of Park Hills, but we also thank you for providing us with safety management and assistance with making sure the course is maintained and safe for the participants.

To the St. Francois County Ambulance District, for your emergency readiness... not only for our event, but every single day!

Central High School, thank you for allowing us the use of your beautiful facility, as well as,  the use of many supplies, such as the tables, chairs and PA system.

Proffer Produce, The BJC Medical Arts Clinic, Country Mart, Parkland Health Center and Save-A-Lot, thank you for providing the drinks and snacks for the participants.  Keeping the runners well hydrated and boosting their energy levels before and after the run with healthy snacks such as fruit and granola bars is critical to ensuring a safe event.

Graphic Options, we appreciate the use of your electronic sign.  This was the first year we've utilized this type of promotion of the event and we would have to say it was an incredible way to make local drivers aware and cautious of the runners and walkers!

Boy Scout Troop 417, each year your troop gets up super early to put out those flags up and down Main Street.  We are so appreciative of this.  It gives the town that patriotic look and feel, and gives participants a truly visible welcome to the community.

Lastly, but certainly, just as importantly, all the sponsors.  Thank you all for supporting us and this event.  The level of this community's integrity increases each time a community sponsored event is backed by so many of it's highly respected, and well know businesses. We appreciate the confidence that you each have in us...

Looking forward to the 11th Annual Event - June 28, 2014!!

Want to Start a Business?  5 Things to Consider First

Think you're ready to start up? Put yourself to the test. Check out the five crucial keys to knowing you'd be a great entrepreneur.

Starting a Business

Andy Palmer has started at least five companies by my count--and I'd guess he has invested in dozens of others.   Based on that experience, I'd consider him an expert when it comes to deciding whether you have what it takes to be an entrepreneur.

After graduating from Bowdoin with a major in English, History, and Computer Science, the passionate Rugby player was injured and decided to become serious about a career. So he got an MBA from Dartmouth's Tuck School.

From there, Palmer went on to be part of the founding team of five start-ups: Austin's Trilogy; pcOrder.com, a Trilogy spinoff for buying PCs and software online, that was spun back in; Bowstreet, a "portal-based tool provider," that IBM acquired in 2006, Infinity Pharmaceuticals, a cancer drug developer that went public 2000; and Vertica Systems, a database company that Hewlett Packard bought in 2011.

Now Palmer spends half his time on life sciences and half on tech start-ups. He has invested an average of $75,000 in some 30 ventures; is a founding board member for six companies; and works on more altruistic projects--such as collaborating with MIT's Broad Institute to help develop a genomics information system.

Here are five thoughts Palmer offered on what he would tell a young person considering whether to become an entrepreneur...

Ways to Make the Rest of 2013 Amazing -  7 "To-Do" Tips

The year is halfway done. Are you on track to meet your year end goals? Here are some ways to make sure you blow through the finish line by December 31st.

To Do List

The older I get, the faster time flies. A month seems to go by like a day. It's hard to fathom that half the year is gone and I am already busy helping clients assess their Q1 and Q2 accomplishments. Some of my clients are ahead of schedule; others are a little behind. Of course, I know of many companies that believe they are neither, simply because they don't plan for the year in the first place. (I would argue these companies are very much behind.)

What's past is past, and the coming July holiday is a good time to take stock of your situation so you can set an action plan to make the rest of the year as productive as possible. Regardless of your position or status, there are actions you can take to drive forward your company, division or even your own career.  Here are seven actions to take immediately.
