Environmentalism as a marketing tool: Clearwater Beach nonprofit shows how
'Ocean plastics are an international scourge. According to  National Geographic , some 18 billion pounds of plastic enter the oceans from coastal areas every year. Those plastics directly harm wildlife and take decades or centuries to fully decompose. Ocean Allies, which formed in 2018, offers local businesses a simple trade. The group certifies businesses as ocean friendly if they meet criteria stipulated by the nonprofit. So far, 33 local businesses have been certified, according to the  Ocean Allies website . Founder Sheri Heilman of Bob Heilman’s Beachcomber restaurant says that number is increasing all the time.' - Tampa Bay Times Feature 8/2

Energy touches all of us every single day, from the food we eat, to the air we breathe, to how we move from home to work and beyond. This is why it’s critical we work together to create comprehensive policies that allow Florida to be a leader in energy innovation. It’s imperative that all Floridians have clean, affordable energy while also creating new opportunities for Florida businesses and addressing the growing crisis of climate change.

I hope you’ll join us September 4-6 for the 2019 Florida Energy and Climate Summit in Tampa. Here, we’ll share ideas on diversifying the state’s energy sources; promoting energy efficiency, renewable energy and alternative vehicle technology; spurring economic growth; and adapting to climate change.

Take a moment to review the  agenda  and then  register  for the summit. We look forward to seeing you in Tampa – together, we can keep Florida growing!

‘Year of the Child’ could be Florida House theme for 2020 Session—and beyond

Could 2020 be the “Year of the Child” in the Florida House? Speaker José Oliva is at least kicking around the concept, according to state Rep.  Travis Cummings , the Appropriations Committee chair.

The Orange Park Republican mentioned on a recent episode of the  He Said She Said podcast that the theme is “being workshopped.”

Cummings said he and Oliva dined recently, and the Speaker mentioned the idea, still in development.

“It is a theme that has been discussed, but without any substance to it as of yet,” explained Oliva spokesman Fred Piccolo. “The title is about as much detail as there is. No decision has been made to move forward with it.”
