Downtown Council Hosts Chamber Breakfast

Resiliency was the focus of last week's Chamber Breakfast, hosted by the Downtown Business Council. Panelists Charlie Ladd of Barron Real Estate, Alan Dodd of the City of Fort Lauderdale, and Alec Bogdanoff of Brizaga, Inc. all gave their input on city infrastructure to handle flooding, high-inch rain, and plans for the future.

An attendee asked about the possibility of discharging floods to the West, "While you don't like to think of Florida being elevated, Lake Okeechobee is about 18 - 20 feet, so it's a little higher than we are. So that water actually flows towards us. So if you pushed it into the Everglades, it would eventually come back towards us," said Bogdanoff.

"We need to advise homeowners and businesses on protecting their properties. Flood insurance and mitigation measures that they can take so that when heavy rains and flooding occur, they're not going to have substantial losses. Those are all really important to having a community that's partnered with us to prepare for the future," said Dodd.

Universal Technical Institute

Grand Opening in Miramar

Universal Technical Institute held a grand opening for their Miramar Campus on August 24th. City of Miramar Mayor Wayne Messam, Vice Mayor of Miramar Alexandra Miramar, State Representative Marie Woodson, and more attended. President Robert Burnfield talked about the institute's dedication to education and setting up students for success outside of the institution.

"Our focus is to ensure that all our students have the best possible support on their career journey to becoming well-trained professionals. Not only do students receive a high-quality education, but we offer support that helps them with financial aid services, accessing a nationwide database of jobs, career counseling, and interview skills training. A key element of support on our transportation, skill trade and energy campuses is early employment...We also have partners locally where students go to work. Most of our students start working sometimes weeks or months after starting school here while they're learning in school and on the job and, most importantly, earning on the job," said President Burnfield.

Jim Moran Institute Accepting Applications

for South Florida Executive Programs

The Jim Moran Institute for Global Entrepreneurship, part of the Florida State University, is accepting applications for its Spring 2024 Small Business Executive Program (SBEP) and Nonprofit Executive Program (NPEP) held in South Florida. Offered at no cost to participants, the program is funded by The Jim Moran Foundation and Jan Moran and her late husband, automotive pioneer Jim Moran. The application deadline is Saturday, September 30.

This year, the Jim Moran Institute is celebrating its 10th anniversary of offering these executive programs at no cost to the South Florida community. The South Florida team has guided and graduated 45 classes and more than 700 leaders since its inception in 2013 and they are committed to continue working with the talented entrepreneurs and leaders in their community.

The SBEP is designed for CEOs, entrepreneurs, business owners, and presidents of small businesses, while the NPEP is for executive directors, presidents, and CEOs of nonprofit organizations. Graduates emerge with the skills and training needed to turn challenges into strategic advantages, capitalize on business opportunities, and implement best practice management. Participants represent a variety of industries.

“Learning that I’m not the only one going through some of the struggles as a business owner and the opportunity to meet and network with others was what I found to be most beneficial,” said Max Zaslavsky, owner of Max Zaslavsky DMD and a graduate of the SBEP.
