Leadership Fort Lauderdale: Business & Industry | |
|
Class 30 of Leadership Fort Lauderdale gathered today at the Chamber for a day of learning about the different business & industries that sustain our economy! The day started with a Leadership huddle with Jordana Foster. Following that, Chamber President Dan Lindblade served as moderator for our panelists: Jenni Morejon, CEO/President of the DDA, Greg Chavarria, City Manager for Fort Lauderdale, and Maggie Gunther, MBA, APR, VP of Marketing & Communications for the Greater Fort Lauderdale Alliance.
Both the panelists and moderator were introduced by Luisa Agathon, Neighbor Support Manager for the City of Fort Lauderdale.
Mayor Dean Trantalis also stopped by to give an encouraging message about the importance of sustainability.
โThis is where we now stand. We have to take the right path forward, ensuring that we have a sustainable future. One that isn't going to just rely on hospitality because look what Covid did to us. We aren't just going to rely on the Marine industry because you never know, they talk about trains and cutting off passageways of the river and trying to prevent the opportunities for growth in the area that has long sustained our community. So, diversity is important. Not just the diversity of our population, but the diversity of our economy,โ said Mayor Trantalis.
Greg Chavarria also chimed in on the success of Fort Lauderdale over the years despite the challenges, โBecause Fort Lauderdale has been efficient with finding opportunities for developers and seeing how it can promote redevelopment of certain areas, we've been able to prosper as the tax income base has increased. And that's what's been able to sustain our annual budget. When I started, it was near $900 Million. Now it's $1.1 Billion.โ
During the discussion, a question was asked about what can be done as a resident of the community to better their community. Jenni Morejon offered her rebuttal, โOur population has doubled in the past 10 years. We're acknowledging that your voice and your needs are there. We have to work stronger together to make sure that you have that access. Kind of like the City Manager said, to be present in these conversations and decisions. It's very few, far, and in between where a resident or employee has the time to go to a city commission meeting at 1:30 pm on a Tuesday and communicate your voice. So how do we have those community connections and opportunities to bring up those kind of concerns and also hopes for the life you want to live downtown.โ
The conversation wrapped up with a quote from Maggie Gunther, โWe addressed several different community issues. Resilience is extremely important, looking ahead. Our job is to bring people working on these issues together, build consensus, and support the experts. That's the way we are addressing these challenges.โ
Overall, a great conversation about increasing the stability and resiliency of our communities!๏ปฟ
