TDT for marketing destination, bridge and CEA

Economic opportunities for Greater Fort Lauderdale

Expansion of the Tourist Development Tax (TDT) in Broward County was up for discussion at last week’s county commission meeting. Commissioners decided against expansion of the use to extend to affordable housing projects 9-0.

I testified against expansion on your behalf to maintain the fund for its intended use—marketing the destination. The $120+ million in TDT revenues annually goes to a variety of uses. From replenishing sand on our beaches to buy a new scoreboard to funding the arts the destination benefits directly from Visit Lauderdale’s fine work.

The commission also decided in a workshop last week to move forward with approving a bridge over the New River instead of a tunnel. The decision was met with immediate opposition from the City of Fort Lauderdale. Time will tell how this will play out. The window is closing for federal funds. Watch for this to heat up.

Our hot economy was discussed by our Council of Economic Advisors (CEA) last week with the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta-Miami Branch.  The effects of inflation and higher interest rates have slowed growth in several sectors. At the same time, over half of CEA members are hiring and planning wage increases. Click here to see CEA survey results.

Lastly, we continue to work on adaptation and mitigation strategies for sea level rise and massive rain events. Residential property values could drop 13 percent and ad valorem revenues ebb 18 percent if we don’t invest now. The problem is, mitigation and adaptation requires study and time which is working against us. We need the business community at the table and leading the discussion on this.

Sincerely,

How many new jobs are need in Florida by 2030?

October 2023 - Member of the Month: Lawrence Mansell

Lawrence Mansell heard positive things about the Greater Fort Lauderdale Chamber of Commerce before joining last year.

“I really wanted to be proactive in helping my business grow, meet like-minded business owners and get involved with the community,” said Lawrence.

What he didn’t foresee was that seven months later, he would take on the role as Chair of the Small Business Council Biz Perks East.

“It was very sudden as the previous Chair decided to make a move to northern Florida and asked me to take over,” Lawrence said. “I was hesitant at first, but I decided to jump in and I'm glad it’s been so successful. We recently had 60 people come!”

Born and raised in South Florida, Lawrence’s life consisted mostly of adventure and sports. He also dabbled in entrepreneurship at a young age. His dream was always to own his own business. As a kid, he tried various ways to make money, like having a car wash business in his neighborhood. In his senior year of college, he had the opportunity to run a new mobile repair business franchise that fixed medical and dental equipment. For over 10 years, he grew this business, but after a while realized it wasn't his passion. In the meantime, photography was always his hobby, and he made the tough decision to sell the mobile repair business and, at 30 years old, started all over on the path he was meant to follow.

He tried all fields of photography, but really loved strategizing with businesses the most, which led him to do videos, which grew more and more over the years. He saw where the industry was going and became a full-service video production company.

Lawrence says, “It’s been an interesting journey, and I really like being able to combine my love for creating visually creative content and helping businesses achieve growth. Saying I love what I do would be an understatement.”

Please join us in recognizing Lawrence for his leadership and growth of Biz Perks East, a monthly Chamber networking morning event that allows local businesses to connect and build meaningful relationships. You can find him hosting it the 3rd Friday of every month. He can be reached at:

Downtown Council Meeting: FTL Police Departmen Presentation

Informative session at the Downtown Council meeting where we had the privilege of meeting with Fort Lauderdale Police Officers, including their dedicated Major William Schultz, to discuss the construction of their new headquarters.

A representative from Moss & Associates, the construction company leading the project, shared his insights, emphasizing their commitment to our community. 'It's our backyard, so we're happy to be a part of this project,' he said. The headquarters is the first phase, followed by the garage, and it's all set to be completed by 2025.

During the discussion, the Major shed light on the department's seamless move to a temporary substation during construction, a challenge they managed swiftly. The officers also provided valuable insights on access routes and resiliency, highlighting their comprehensive plans. Exciting times are ahead, with an expansion on the horizon as they transition to a new 198,000 square-foot facility.

In addition to this engaging discussion, the council also motioned to approve the last meeting's minutes and shared exciting announcements about upcoming events in our vibrant community. Stay tuned for more updates on this transformative project and join us for the exciting events ahead!"
