On Halloween, the Grand Island Area Chamber of Commerce was a part of the 2nd Annual Calaveritas en la Cuatro Trick or Treat! Hundreds of children and families came out and participated.
For the 2nd year, the Multicultural Coalition hosted this event, which is the Latin American version of Halloween. The celebration started at 4th Street Banquet Hall, where there was cupcake decorating, face painting, coloring pages, and a photo backdrop. There were 34 Grand Island Businesses taking part in handing out candy. The event stretched across nine city blocks.
“Multicultural decided to come up to the 4th Street BID (Business Improvement District) and say ‘Hey we want, we would like, to propose some cultural events to bring awareness of what other changes that are soon to happen on 4th Street and to highlight the businesses themselves,’“ said Executive Director of Multicultural Coalition Raul Hawkins. ”So when we approached the BID we were like ‘Hey we want to do a Trick or Treat, but make it culturally appropriate with the Day of the Dead.’"
This was also a Trunk or Treat at the event, and attendees got mingle with City of Grand Island emergency personnel.
Hawkins said Calaveritas en la Cuatro celebrates the many different cultures that exist in Grand Island.
“We have a vibrant Hispanic population as well as Somalian, Sudanese, and then, right now, the influx of Cubans and we look at Guamanians and El Salvadorians,” said Hawkins. “Just exploring 4th Street within itself, you could see all the different cultures that are in our community.”
