Celebrate Black History Month
Ishan Johnson
“Not everything that is faced can be changed, but nothing can be changed until it is faced.”
― James Baldwin

Dear AFP Chicago,

Happy Black History Month! It’s an honor and privilege to be able to address you all in this latest issue of eDevelopments. I’m Ishan Johnson, your Vice-President of Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Access, I hope my message finds you staying safe and warm.

For me, Black History Month is all-year round. I opened with a quote from one of my inspirations, James Baldwin, who was never afraid to speak truth to power. He, along with many others such as Bayard Rustin and Marsha P. Johnson, fought for both Black and LGBTQ+ people. I keep their legacies alive by showing up, even if there isn’t a place for me.

As I begin my second term, I want to reflect on AFP Chicago’s IDEA journey. We’ve made Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Access a priority for the last five years, and have much to be proud of. The goals and benchmarks we set for our chapter are currently met and exceeded, our five affinity groups are all growing in size and influence, we continue to support emerging fundraisers from diverse communities through our Fellows Program, and we’ll even provide honorariums for program speakers this year. Such initiatives would not be possible without the leadership of our Board of Directors, IDEA Committee, and entire membership.

Thank you for supporting this work.

We’re moving onward, together, and AFP Chicago is beginning to reflect the breadth of talent within our sector and city. Stay encouraged, be good to yourself and each other, and I look forward to seeing you this year.

Yours,

Ishan Johnson

The Next Step in Your Professional Journey
Friday, February 11, 2022
12:00 - 1:30 PM

Members: $20

This program is approved for 1.5 CFRE points.

Are you thinking about ways to advance your fundraising career and promote your commitment to the sector? The Certified Fund Raising Executive (CFRE) certification helps you stand out as a recognized, confident and ethical fundraiser. CFRE International is an independent nonprofit organization whose sole mission is dedicated to setting standards in philanthropy through a valid and reliable certification process for fundraising professionals. The CFRE is the only accredited, globally recognized certification for fundraising professionals. AFP Chicago encourages and stands behind the pillars of the CFRE certification and education, as all of AFP Chicago’s educational credits are certified by CFRE International.

Join AFP Chicago as we welcome Jeff Stanger, CFRE Education Resources Director, for a virtual presentation on the necessary steps to becoming a CFRE, from the application to exam preparation and fulfillment. You will also have the opportunity to hear from Amelia Garza, recent CFRE, on her personal experience. Be sure to come with questions.

Perhaps this may resonate with you: your organization is undergoing significant stress. Between the pandemic and the accompanying operational challenges, work demands are going through the roof. Funding is needed more than ever to keep fulfilling your mission, and your donors deserve high levels of attention and responsiveness. Meanwhile, half of your fundraising team has joined the Great Resignation, shifting your duties and making you question whether or not you should be making a change, too.

To navigate this churn across our profession, the need for mentorship among fundraisers is most clear. AFP Chicago’s Peer Mentoring Program provides a fantastic opportunity for veterans in our field to share their wisdom and insights with protégés as part of a year-long exchange. If you’re looking for guidance, a wide-angle view on your career trajectory and greater understanding of the field, working with a mentor may provide the professional development you need to harness your talents and meet your goals. If you’re looking for a chance to grow as a leader, are energized by your work in philanthropy and are invested in the success of others, your perspectives can be of tremendous benefit as a mentor.

Applications for the Spring 2022 class, as either a mentor or protégé, are now open. In addition to younger professionals, we are also accepting applications from a limited number of more-experienced protégés looking for a mentor. The deadline is February 18, 2022.

AFP Chicago prioritizes Inclusion, Diversity, Equity & Access (IDEA) and is committed to our global organization’s commitment to “developing and maintaining a diverse organization that reflects, is responsive to, and embraces the diversity of the communities we serve throughout the world; respecting and valuing all people.”

To be an IDEA Scholar, one must be responsible for fundraising in the metropolitan Chicago area and either identify themselves as an ethnic minority/LGBTQ/disabled person or work for an organization that represents those communities.

IDEA Scholars are provided a stipend to join the AFP Chicago community as a new member. They are given complimentary access to several educational workshops and networking programs throughout their year as an IDEA Scholar.

All scholars are encouraged to take part in as many events as possible and grow their relationships with other members of the AFP Chicago community. They are invited to join committees and affinity groups that are of interest as they are fantastic forums to work with other development professionals and grow their networks. In addition, scholars can apply to participate in the Peer Mentoring program, a resource for those interested in working one-one-one with another member of AFP Chicago.

AFP Chicago recognizes that Inclusion, Diversity, Equity & Access (IDEA) are central to its mission and are proud to offer the IDEA Scholar program.
