CAAHEP and CoAEMSP Plan to Launch Voluntary AEMT Accreditation January 1, 2025

To advance the recommendations of the 2019 National EMS Scope of Practice Model and the 2021 National EMS Education Standards, CAAHEP plans to launch voluntary programmatic accreditation at the Advanced Emergency Medical Technician (AEMT) level by January 1, 2025; CoAEMSP will provide the accreditation services.

There are several steps prior to January 1, 2025, to gather perspectives and recommendations from stakeholders and develop and implement a voluntary programmatic accreditation at the AEMT level. Key milestones in advance of the launch include:

• May - November 2023 - Robust stakeholder engagement and feedback
• December 4, 2023 - Open for public comment the policies and interpretations of the CAAHEP Standards for AEMT education programs. 
• January 18, 2024 - Public comment period closes. (Feb 4, the CoAEMSP Board reviews the comments and approves the final draft)
• March 4, 2024 - Publish policies and interpretations of the CAAHEP Standards for AEMT education programs. 
• June 1, 2024 - Make available all documents and forms for AEMT programs, including the Letter of Review (LoR) application, self-study report, site visit report, annual report, etc.
• January 1, 2025 - Accept LoR applications from AEMT programs. 

CoAEMSP will hold a Virtual Town Hall on June 16, 2023, at 1 PM Central Time, to provide more information on the rollout of the voluntary accreditation for AEMT education programs. Additional information is available on the CoAEMSP website.

Out-of-State Satellite or Alternate Location: Assistant Medical Director is Required

Do you have an out-of-state satellite campus or alternate location? If you do, then an assistant medical director may be required.

The program must provide evidence of a formal relationship with a licensed physician currently authorized to practice in each state where the program’s students are participating in patient care and accept responsibility for the practice of those students. 

Programs requesting a satellite location or an alternate location outside of the state in which the main campus is located are required to have a medical director that can legally provide supervision for the out-of-state location. If the program’s medical director or associate medical director cannot provide out-of-state supervision, then the sponsor must appoint an assistant medical director (Standard III.B.4.) that can legally provide supervision for out-of-state locations.

CAAHEP Standard V: Fair Practices

Join CoAEMSP for a webinar on fair practices!

Fair practices encompass a variety of responsibilities an educational program must provide to prospective and enrolling students. Clear and accurate information allows students to make informed decisions regarding the policies, procedures, and outcome performance of the program. Have you ever had a student seek to challenge a grade? What kind of process does your program have to guide the student through such a situation? Other than tuition, are all the costs associated with attending and successfully completing the program well-defined? Join us as we review the important components of the CAAHEP Standards regarding fair practices designed to protect students and the program.

At the conclusion of this presentation, the participant will be able to:

• Define the term fair practices.
• Analyze the components of the CAAHEP Standards regarding fair practices.
• Explain the importance of fair practices.

Fundamentals of Accreditation Workshop for the EMS Professions

These workshops are designed to educate participants on the CAAHEP Standards and the accreditation process, enhancing the accreditation knowledge of Paramedic program faculty.
