Where Is Your Program? Alternate Locations and Satellites

EMS education modalities continue to evolve from original single-location classrooms to alternatives in delivery as technology grows. Changes may be driven by the availability of resources, workforce and agency needs, or by the desire of learners for a non-traditional learning environment. In response to these needs, programs may develop satellite locations or use alternate locations to deliver classroom and laboratory activities. Regardless of the modality, students attending Paramedic programs must receive the same educational program, and the CoAEMSP policies describe the requirements for Satellites and Alternate Locations. This session will review these requirements and considerations for implementation and provide examples of best practices for managing the delivery.

At the conclusion of this presentation, the participant will be able to:

•   Describe the differences between a Satellite and an Alternate Location.

•   List the requirements of a Satellite and an Alternate Location.

•   Discuss considerations in developing a Satellite or Alternate Location.

Resource Assessment: When, Why, and How…

& the Resource Assessment Matrix

Effectively educating Paramedic students is challenging, requiring many different resources. Each year Paramedic programs are required to complete a Resource Assessment Survey of both program personnel and students. Survey results include 10 different component areas and are reported using the Resource Assessment Matrix. Annually assessing resources provides program leadership, including the medical director and advisory committee, the ability to reaffirm areas of strength and develop action plans for areas in need of improvement. Town Hall Meetings are not recorded! Be sure to register to attend and provide your input!

You are invited to participate in a Town Hall hosted by the CoAEMSP Board and Staff. This is an opportunity for programs to provide insight into the strengths of CoAEMSP, and the value of accreditation, offer suggestions for improvement and assist in making any needed enhancements.

The CoAEMSP will provide an update on projects completed since the last Town Hall (Listening Session), projects in progress, and what is on the horizon.

(The format will allow for two-way communication, so your comments may be provided via voice or chat.)

We value your comments and appreciate your participation.

Following are the prompts that may be used to facilitate the Town Hall.

• How can we (CoAEMSP) better communicate with you and your staff?
• What information on the CAAHEP Standards and CoAEMSP process would best assist you in the daily operation of your program? (Basically, what information do you need that you currently don’t have?)

New Year, New Name!

The same great content, just a new name. Fundamentals of Accreditation for the EMS Professions, presented by CoAEMSP effective November 1, 2022 (formerly known as the CAAHEP Accreditation Workshop). The Fundamentals of Accreditation workshop educates participants on the 2015 CAAHEP Standards & Guidelines, the accreditation process, the self-study report, and enhancing the accreditation knowledge of Paramedic program faculty. The workshop uses expert presentations, interactive group learning activities, and best practices to avoid common stumbling blocks.

The CoAEMSP extended the original guidelines associated with CAAHEP Standards III.A.2. Hospital/Clinical Affiliations and Field/Internship Affiliations and III.C.3. Curriculum to permit the use of alternative evaluation methods to include scenarios, case studies, and simulation as well as the adjustment of minimum competencies to satisfy the requirements of these standards for Paramedic educational programs through December 31, 2022. (The original dates were October 31, 2020; July 1, 2021; and December 31, 2021). This update supersedes any prior guidance by CoAEMSP.

The following article is reprinted from the NAEMT’s e-newsletter, Pulse.

It is with great pleasure that we announce NAEMT’s new Honorary member, Paul Berlin. He has held a distinguished career in EMS and has provided outstanding service to both NAEMT and the EMS profession. Chief Paul Berlin was nominated by NAEMT President Bruce Evans and ratified by the NAEMT Board of Directors.

Paul has served on the Board of the Committee on Accreditation of Educational Programs for the EMS Professions (CoAEMSP) for the past 13 years, participating in Paramedic program site visits. He has conducted research and published EMS articles focused on the use of UV-C lights for infection control, point-of-care testing, and confined space medical care. He is approaching 50 years of National Registry certification.

With a Michigan Ambulance Attendant License, Paul began his EMS career with Livingston County Ambulance in Brighton, MI, and later became an EMT, receiving his National Registry certification in 1974. He went on to become a Paramedic in 1977 and also an EMT instructor. He later joined the Midland Hospital Center and began teaching EMTs for Mid-Michigan Community College and then, Paramedic program director. He then became EMS Programs Director for Tacoma Community College in Tacoma, WA. In 1988, he got a job with Gig Harbor Fire, serving over the years as Firefighter/EMT, Firefighter/ Paramedic, EMS officer then EMS Division Chief until retiring in 2011.

Paul has been involved with the American Heart Association and served as a medical manager for the Washington State Urban Search and Rescue team.

One common request we have received is to make the Student Minimum Competency Matrix editable.

The good news is that we have made it editable, and now it can be found here.
