A Message From Your

AMTA-KY Chapter President

Jeff Butler, LMT

A Slow Return to Normal!

I hope everyone is wringing every last bit of enjoyment from the summer, as time is certainly flying by!

The AMTA National Convention was in Cleveland last week, and it was a wonderful opportunity to finally engage and reconnect with fellow massage therapists from around the country. Our state was fairly well represented, and I hope all those that attended were able to learn a lot, and came home as reinvigorated towards our profession and organization as I.

On a more local note, we (along with our lobbyist Bob Babbage) are working with the state revenue cabinet to nail down the details of the impending sales tax. So far, there are no final details beyond it going into effect on January 1, 2023. Our Government Relations Committee chair Ann Boone has a bit more details below.

Moving forward, our chapter is trying something new beginning this year, to further engage with our members from around the commonwealth. We will be hosting low-cost social events throughout the state and strongly encourage everyone to attend if they are able. The first event will be the September Social Soiree, an evening appetizer cruise held aboard the Queen City Riverboat in Dayton, KY on Sunday September 18th. Register now for Early Bird pricing! Additionally, any member of AMTA-KY that brings an LMT that is currently a non-member LMT will receive $20.00 off of their AMTA-KY 2023 Spring Educational Conference registration. If you have suggestions or requests for an event in your local area, we would love to hear from you!

Get ready for the AMTA-KY 2023 Spring Conference! Planning is in full swing. Stay tuned to the newsletter for more information in the coming months. We are really excited to finally host a full chapter event once again. Covid did a number on us all, but I believe that our chapter is coming back stronger than ever!

Government Relations Report:

Update September 4, 2022

Ann Boone, LMT

Government Relations Chair

On 8/31/2022, AMTA’s Government Relations and our lobbyist team, Babbage Cofounder, spoke with Commissioner of the Department of Revenue, Thomas B. Miller, and his team regarding House Bill 8 (HB8). Commissioner Miller’s team is made up of Richard Dobson, senior staffer responsible for HB8's implementation, Gary Morris, long-time Revenue Department manager and Barbara Barnes, Revenue Cabinet Deputy Commissioner. They are dedicated to the industry’s thoughtful input in order to gain some clarity on how to move forward as this law goes into effect.

As the law stands on 1/1/2023, many services will be subject to a state sales tax. Massage Therapy is included in this law. The exception is in cases where there is proof of “medical necessity” for massage. As a profession, we would argue that ALL massage therapy is “medically necessary". We all have clients who are seeking massage therapy for very different reasons although the outcome is essentially the same: better overall quality of life. Whether seeking a respite from their daily stresses, pain management or support as they seek to eliminate the necessity for opioid medications, one might argue that all of these reasons justify “medical necessity”. This is only a short list of the many reasons, as professionals, we are seeing an increase in medically complicated clients. The reasons aren’t always purely physical. Depression and anxiety are at an all-time high. I, personally, have clients who are referred by their psychologists and psychiatrists for massage therapy to help with mitigating these often life-alternating conditions.

Our meeting was a fact-finding, jumping-off point for both the AMTA and Revenue Cabinet teams. In addition to those Health Care Professionals (HCPs) who are already licensed to prescribe (e.g., PCPs, Chiropractors, Osteopaths), we are seeking to expand the list of those who may prescribe massage therapy to include athletic trainers and other professionals who are trained to understand how massage benefits their clients/patients. We explained that the feedback we’ve received from physicians is that this law will place an unnecessary burden on an already stressed medical system as they will have to see more patients due to increased prescription demand. In addition, many PCPs are not educated about the benefits of massage therapy nor are they aware of the plethora of current research on opioid mitigation and general pain management.

Both teams expressed gratitude in gaining clarity on what we do and what may be expected around this law. Our team is assembling evidence-based information to present to the Revenue Cabinet and its team when we next meet.

Our next meeting is to be announced.

AMTA-KY MEMBER SPOTLIGHT

Beth Tompkins, LMT

Meet our newest AMTA-KY Volunteer Beth Tompkins, LMT.

Beth was born in Harrodsburg, KY and moved to Henderson, KY when she was 2 where she has lived ever since. She has been married to Logan for 18 years and they have a 15-year-old son named Creek and a 12-year-old daughter named Ashlynn. She also has two dogs named Lloyd and Capt’n.

When COVID hit in 2020 - everything paused. She was in a management position with Kentucky State Parks at the time, but the office closed to the public for a while, the kids' sports stopped, everything stopped. It was the perfect opportunity for her to go to massage school! She attended Bodyworks Institute in Evansville, IN and her class of 6 students was the only graduating class in 2021 for the entire state of Indiana.

She now owns and operates a roll-off dumpster business as her primary income. Her husband owns a hauling and excavation business as well, so she runs the office operations for both businesses four days a week and takes massage clients at her studio in downtown Henderson one day a week. She recently celebrated her first year in private practice.

Beth joined AMTA when she started massage school and renewed as a professional member when she started her practice. She attended her first national convention last month in Cleveland and has just accepted the role as Newsletter Editor for AMTA-KY!

When asked where do you see yourself in 5 years in practice and in AMTA? Her response was..."In 6 years, I will be an empty nester, so this question really brings up all the emotions! My dreams and goals have always been centered around communications, so you’ll probably find me teaching at a massage school - or owning my own! I’d also love to travel and help connect therapists to each other and to important topics in the massage community."

Welcome Beth! We are so excited to have you as an AMTA-KY Chapter Volunteer!
