A Message from Your

AMTA-KY Chapter President

Jo Ann Klein, BSIBS, AASMM, LMT

Happy Autumn!!!! It's finally sweater weather, with the cooler breezes that come with the shorter days and longer nights.

SAVE THE DATE for the 2024 Kentucky Spring Education Conference!!! It will be held at the Lexington, Embassy Suites, March 22-24. Stay tuned for our roster of presenters.

It was wonderful seeing so many of you in attendance at the 2023 National Convention in Phoenix, AZ August 24 - 26. Some of the world class speakers were Whitney Lowe, Kelly Bowers, Scott Raymond, Mariann Sisco, Brian Trzaskos, Dr. Dorothea Atkins, and Pete Whitridge. We learned about business, how to tailor sessions using ladder of engagement protocols, self care for knee pain, trauma informed protocols, unlocking the science of stretching, and post-abdominal surgery.

The closing session was one that I feel every massage therapist ought to hear. It was a panel discussion titled: Innovation Approaches to Health Care - Massage Therapy and Whole Person Health.

On the panel were: Tracy Gaudet, OB-GYN, Denise Millstine, Director of Integrative Medicine at the Mayo Clinic, Juli Olson, National Lead of Acupuncture, Veterans Health Administration, and David Schurtleff, PhD, Deputy Director and Acting Scientific Director of the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health. They spoke primarily about the Whole Health initiative of the VA, how it was designed and implemented. They addressed the need for training in working with opiod/PTSD, and trauma patients, and the push to get insurance carriers to be required to cover massage therapy.

The 2024 National Convention is being held September 12 - 14 in Tampa, Florida. Hope to see you there.

Assembly of Delegates Report

AMTA-KY Chapter

The AMTA Assembly of Delegates met in person in Phoenix, Arizona on August 23,

2023.

The chapter delegate position is an elected position. Chapters have the opportunity to send one or two professional members elected by the chapter membership to provide their state’s voice on a national platform.

There were topics of discussion brought to an open microphone and limited discussion occurred on the topics during the meeting. For your frame of reference - discussion topics and position statements are formulated at the chapter or membership level and submitted in a strict timeframe to National where a committee reviews the topic along with Chapter Legal at the National level. Some discussion topics make it to the final meeting for further discussion by the AOD. Not all discussion topics get to the AOD.

For those of you who do not know us: I am Kim Alexander, former chapter secretary and

delegate to the convention for this year from the Kentucky chapter. Shawanna Turner is sharing this responsibility with me.

Since the election in March, National has been hosting open houses for discussion of topics relevant to the state chapters. The open houses are designed to allow the delegates to have interaction prior to the conference. We have participated in discussion with delegates from across the country via Zoom and also by email. There was a proposed position statement and a discussion topic on the table that have made it through the pipeline (after chapter submission to national and review).

The first is a position statement supporting the efficacy of massage for cancer patients. This statement will, if passed through the AOD, go to the National Board of Directors. From there, the Board would determine if a research group would be created to assess current research in the profession related to cancer and oncology massage.

I am proud to say I was a part of passing the first position statement on the topic of massage therapy and cancer after much email and in person discussion.

The second item (discussion topic) concerns decriminalizing sex trafficking and its potential impact on different aspects of massage therapy.

The Discussion Topic question is as follows:

How might the Decriminalization of Sex Workers and the Sex Workers Industry impact

the Massage Therapy Profession/Statutes/Licensure?

If you have comments or information you would like to share regarding these items,

please send them to us at delegate@amtaky.org for our reference.

Thank you for the opportunity to serve the chapter and you as members.

Kimberly Alexander, Delegate

Shawanna Turner, Delegate

Government Relations Report:

Update Sept 24, 2023

Ann Boone, LMT

Government Relations Chair

I hope the transition from Summer to Fall finds each and every one of you healthy and happy.

Here are a few updates of ongoing GR business:

Recently, Karen Frazier, KBLMT Vice chair, and Michelle Shane, KBVE Executive Director met to start the process of information gathering to move forward with proposed animal massage permit legislation. Denise Logsdon and I have provided information to KBLMT and KBVE with regards to our collaboration regarding this issue with both of them in 2019/2020. As previously explained, this would be an “Allied Animal Health Professional'' permit issued by the KBVE. The 2023 permit version of the bill (HB167) is only available to animal chiropractors currently. Equine massage therapists, as well as equine dentists, will be considered in the future. No action is anticipated on this for a couple of years. However, it is important that equine massage therapists, or anyone interested in following this law, contact the KBVE at VET@ky.gov requesting to be notified of future public comment periods and meeting dates.

We are continuing to work on getting the PEMF and Microcurrent device’ trainings approved...
