A Message from Your

AMTA-KY Chapter President

Jo Ann Klein, BSIBS, AASMM, LMT

Fabulous Fall, everyone! The morning air is crisp. The leaves are changing. I hope everyone is well.

I would like to send a big THANK YOU to all our members who made the trip to Dallas, TX, for the 2025 AMTA National Conference. I'd also like to thank our delegates, Kim Alexander and Whitney Oates, for their excellent representation of our chapter at the Assembly of Delegates this year.

Our Keynote speaker was Allison Massari, who described how massage therapy has allowed her to make an amazing recovery from a car accident.

There were so many fantastic educational opportunities with stellar instructors. I wish I could name them all, but here are a few of the renowned instructors: Ben Benjamin, Dr. Marc Ellis, and Kelly Bowers. We had the opportunity to hear them teaching us orthopedic massage, the neuro-fascial connection, and marketing massage therapy for the real world.

If you want to be invigorated and energized about our profession, please join us. The 2026 AMTA National Convention will be held in Denver, CO, August 27-29. I hope to see you there.

There may be changes coming for our members in Bowling Green. Below you will find the Government Relations report from Ann Boone, Government Relations Chair, for what we know right now.

The 2025 Fall Fun Fling is right around the corner. We are excited to see you and your family at the meet-up at Gallrein Farms in Shelbyville, KY, on October 5. Board members will be at the green tractor parked near the driveway. We will be wearing orange shirts and giving out the AMTA-KY Chapter State pins to members. Here is a link to the page for Gallrein Farms. Below you will find the invitation to join us. Please RSVP to let us know you will be coming. This event is self-pay, and we are encouraging you to bring your family for a Fun Family Day!

Thank you for choosing to be a member of the Kentucky Chapter of AMTA.

2025 Assembly of Delegates Report

AMTA National Convention

Kim Alexander, Delegate

The AMTA Assembly of Delegates (AOD) met before the opening of the National Convention held in Dallas. The meeting was held the afternoon of August 20. I was in attendance, representing the Kentucky Chapter, along with Whitney Oates.

Since the election in March, National has been hosting open houses for discussion of topics relevant to the state chapters. The open houses are designed to allow the delegates to interact before the conference. We have participated in discussions with delegates from across the country via Zoom and also by email.

AOD Delegates receive Position Statements and Discussion Topics a few months before National Convention, which have been submitted by members in the hopes of becoming the AMTA's official stance on a subject or for consideration for future Position Statements. We review them, discuss various points, ask questions of the author/s for clarification purposes, before making them public to our state’s members. We send out emails with the discussion information and connect it to the Kentucky Chapter.

We ask our members to email us their questions, concerns, and thoughts. Delegates take this information to the AOD meeting, where we have discussions in small groups and can address the moderator/delegates with these perspectives, along with our own.

There were several Position Statements and Discussion Topics in 2025 submitted for consideration. Two discussion topics were selected by National for further discussion and consideration at the 2025 conference.

Trauma and Massage Therapy – 2-part question

A. What are the ethical considerations when working with clients who disclose trauma (or those whose bodies reveal trauma responses, and how can standardized education help therapists navigate these delicate moments with care, efficacy, and professionalism?

B. How might a deeper understanding of trauma change the way massage therapists choose modalities/techniques, build rapport, communicate boundaries, and create safe environments for clients?

Mentoring

How can AMTA revitalize its mentorship program for massage therapists?

During the AOD meeting, the first discussion questions were reworded a bit. The word ‘required’ was a big part of the conversation. The interchange extended into requiring trauma-informed education at the entry level, and there was a mixture of responses. Some groups thought it should be a requirement to enter the field, and others thought it was more advanced and should only be defined at the entry level.

Scope of practice and staying within the scope of practice were a large part of the rationale. Referring to the 2024 conversation about universal definitions, there was a lengthy conversation as well about how to define trauma.

The second discussion question generated a lot of great suggestions for AMTA. I would estimate that about 60-70% of the delegates present did not even know that AMTA had an infrastructure for mentoring. The primary takeaways from the online and in-person discussions for this topic include:

A. Increasing visibility on the AMTA National website – the mentoring page is buried deeply on the website. If you were not actively looking for it, you probably would miss it.

B. School liaison visibility – perhaps having a time at National for a mentoring meet-up and pairing for discussion would promote the process. School liaisons could actively assist those looking for mentoring through local chapters.

C. Expand the infrastructure – provide more guidance for mentors and mentees

D. Provide CE’s for mentors – the state of Missouri has it built into their regs as potential CE options

The discussion topics generated a robust discussion in all groups. There was no new information provided regarding the 2024 Discussion Topic and Position Statement for closure at the conference, although many delegates (including myself) had asked for the information.

I felt the information gained was important and look forward to next year’s outcomes on these subjects, as well as new Position Statements and Discussion Topics.

Thank you for the opportunity to represent Kentucky members at the National level.

Kim Alexander, AMTA- KY Delegate

Government Relations Report:

Sept 17, 2025

Ann Boone, LMT

Government Relations Chair

AMTA-KY, AMTA National GR Committee, and KBLMT are watching the development of an anti-human trafficking ordinance in Bowling Green that could create some hardships for legitimate LMT’s. The City Council sponsor of this ordinance is listening to concerns, and we hope to see her amendment on Sept 12 that should greatly relieve our concerns. Human Trafficking is an ancient and terrible industry that keeps casting a shadow over massage therapy. We hope this process in Bowling Green is an opportunity to educate about legitimate LMT’s and their variety of work situations, as well as a good start to shutting down much of the trafficking in the area.

Ann Boone, LMT AMTA-KY GR Chair

When was the last time you were on the Kentucky Board of Licensure for Massage Therapy (
KBLMT) Website? Do you know whether someone holds a current license as an LMT? How can you double-check your renewal date and renew quickly? Go to the KBLMT website: https://bmt.ky.gov. On the left side of the first page is a list of " How Do I". This list includes Verify a License, Renew a License, Apply to Become a Board Member, and File a Complaint.

The renewal process online can be very quick if you are not already past your renewal date and you have everything submitted. When you do renew, be prepared to submit a photo ID, a current photo (headshot with no background, hat, or sunglasses), and your renewal fee. Only if you are randomly selected for an audit will you need to submit proof of CE’s. If audited, include the name and contact information of the CE provider, title of class, number of credits, and a copy of the certificate. Any problems? Call tech support at 502-564-3296 or the Board administrator, Jessica, at 502-782-8808. You can renew up to 60 days prior to your renewal date, so no need to wait until the last minute! And when you get it done early, the renewal date doesn’t change. You don’t lose by renewing early.

To attend a meeting virtually or via phone, click "Board Members and Meetings" under "Quick Links, to see meeting dates and times. Then click on the PDF for the next meeting to find video or phone links to listen in. The meeting dates are important: if you are applying for a license or want to have an item you would like on the next meeting agenda, you will need to get it to the board administrator at least 10 business days prior to the next meeting. The meetings are open to the public, but you must be on time to enter and on the agenda to speak. On this link, you can also read past meeting minutes if you are looking for a particular decision. A few people actually do this!

Questions? Feel free to contact the board administrator. AMTA-KY hopes to have a board representative at our next educational conference. They will be there to show you around the website and answer questions. Just like anything else, using the website gets easier every time you browse around and get familiar with where everything is located!

Denise Logsdon, LMT AMTA-KY GR Member
