Community Services Update July 2022

Meet Atlantic Housing Foundation's newest property, Waters at Oakbrook in Summerville, SC! The town of Summerville has been great to work with, and the location is ideal for an apartment community. We built Oakbrook in an older established neighborhood with a good school system and medical, retail, and dining services nearby.

Since this is AHF's fourth iteration of our new developments, we were able to make improvements based on lessons learned from the previous three. We learned how to design the buildings better to be more cost effective. Roof and building patterns have progressively improved to increase efficiency. And we've refined our color selections both inside and outside for the best aesthetics.

Are people moving in? Yes, about 40 of the 216 units are already occupied and leasing is underway. We look forward to serving residents at this new community in Summerville!

Community Services Highlight Covington Creek began their partnership with Dallas Catholic Charities back in January of this year. The organization comes out to the property every last Thursday of the month and distributes food for the entire community. This service has helped not only Covington Creek's residents, but numerous others in the city of Irving. Community Engagement Associate Maria Guevara said, "Residents have given such positive feedback and appreciate the help, especially with the way grocery prices are rising. I had one resident come up to me personally to express how grateful she is for the service we are providing. She shared with me how DCC has helped put some money back in her pocket due to her economic state not being great at this time." Many single parents like this resident are struggling financially. And with kids out of school for the summer, the need to provide all three meals for them adds to their concern.   Jewel Foundation has been key in meeting this need as well. They've provided lunches for Covington Creek children for the past three years. During the school year, they bring meals a couple of afternoons per week. But during summer vacation they come Monday through Friday. This gives parents one less meal to worry about while kids are home all day.  Maria is continually looking for ways she can help the Covington Creek community. She said, "My goal is to partner with multiple organizations to further help our residents live and feel more comfortable." Keep up the great work!
