Poor Outdoor Air Quality - Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA)
Regulation Consultation
|
Recent years have shown an undeniable decline in outdoor air quality in Ontario due to a variety of factors including pollutant emissions. Currently, the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA) does not specifically address outdoor air quality.
However, under the Act, employers have a general responsibility to take every precaution they can for worker protection, which includes protecting workers from hazards associated with outdoor air quality.
It’s time to weigh in! The MOLITSD is seeking feedback about:
- If poor air quality is an issue for Ontario workplaces, and
- If the OHSA and/or it’s regulation should be changed.
Click here more information including how to weigh in on the matter.

Heat Stress - Proposed Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA) Regulation
|
Over the past few decades we all have noticed our climate change and be prone to more intense changes, often for short periods and sometimes more longer changes. Due to this, extreme heat events are becoming an ever-growing health concern for workers in Ontario. Heat-related illnesses can affect all of us, many of us can and may develop heat related chronic illnesses. This significant work environment factor can cause occupational illness which, in extreme cases can lead to death.
How can an employer address this significant work-related hazard? For many years in Ontario workplaces have been legally required to follow the American College of Governmental Hygienists (ACGIH) guidelines. The Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development (MLITSD) has now proposed to introduce a new, standalone heat stress regulation under the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA) with specific requirements that would apply to all workplaces governed by the Ontario legislation.
Keep an eye on our social media for more updates or visit ontariocanada.com to have your say. This regulation is currently seeking the input of employers and workers alike. We have until September 18, 2023 to add in our thoughts and comments.
