Managing Legislative Changes in the Workplace
JOINT HEALTH & SAFETY COMMITTEE CERTIFICATION TRAINING
Wilkens Health and Safety Solutions (WHSS) is the only Chief Prevention Officer (CPO) approved Joint Health and Safety Committee (JHSC) Certification training provider located in Kingston.

Part One  Basic Certification Training
Part One B asic Certification training  provides an overall knowledge of the Health and Safety Legislation that applies to most workplaces.

Part Two Workplace Specific  Training
Part Two Workplace Specific  Certification training focuses on the significant hazards in your workplace and how to assess, control and/or eliminate them.

IKEA Fined $55,000 After a Worker Injured by Trolley, Toronto
August 23, 2018

An employee who was working as a cart retriever was directing a row of 43 nested flatbed shopping trolleys into a "cart corral," directing the row of trolleys from the front while a co-worker pushed from the rear. The worker had to walk directly in front of the row of the trolleys as it went down a narrow hallway. While doing so, the trolleys accelerated and struck the worker. The worker fell to the floor, and the row of trolleys struck the worker in such a way that the worker was jammed against a wall. The worker suffered a critical injury.

Managing Cannabis in the Workplace
Cannabis in the Workplace - What You Need to Know

Cannabis is set to be legalized on October 17th, 2018 which will bring new challenges and questions to your workplace. When it comes to health and safety, your drug and alcohol policy stays the same - an employee cannot be impaired while at work. Using cannabis at work without a prescription for medicinal use is still illegal. If you have a current policy about impairment and the use of drugs and alcohol in the workplace, make sure to update it to include cannabis.

Please Note: The Smoke Free Ontario Legislation was updated in 2017 to include banning the use of cannabis and e-cigarettes in all workplaces.

Mental Health in the Workplace
"You Are Not Alone"
In the past two months, three Ontario Provincial Police Members took their own lives because of mental illness. While being a police officer involves a high risk of exposure to traumatic events, poor mental health can affect anyone, any worker and any workplace.

Read more of the article here.

When it comes to psychological health in the workplace, you do not need to have all the answers as an employer, but you should be able to provide a worker with community resources or be able to accommodate the employee, in the event that they come to you with mental health concerns.

Health and Safety in your Workplace
Voluntary Health and Safety Representative Training.
A Health and Safety Representative (HSR) is required in workplaces with six (6) to nineteen (19) workers. This representative is selected by their co-workers or union and cannot have managerial functions.

Currently, the legislation does not require mandatory training for HSR's, but because they play such an important role in the Internal Responsibility System (IRS), it is strongly recommended that HSR's take training to understand and fulfill their role. The Ontario Health and Safety Associations recently released training programs that are voluntary for HSR's to complete. They can also complete an equivalent course, such as our JHSC Basic Training Course at Wilkens Health & Safety Solutions.
