Vincentian Reflection for the Twenty-Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time

September 18, 2022

Gospel: (Luke 16:1-13) Jesus said to his disciples, “A rich man had a steward who was reported to him for squandering his property. He summoned him and said…’Prepare a full account of your stewardship, because you can no longer be my steward. The steward said to himself, ‘What shall I do?…I am not strong enough to dig and I am ashamed to beg….So he called in his master’s debtors one by one. To the first he said, ‘How much do you owe?’ He replied, ‘One hundred measures of olive oil.’ He said, ‘Here is your promissory note. Sit down and write fifty.’ Then to another who owed one hundred kors of wheat, he said “Here is your promissory note, write one for eighty.’ And the master commended that dishonest steward for acting prudently."

Reflection: Prudent decisiveness that this gospel recommends means that we recognize that all our choices in daily living are really choices for eternal life. We honestly try to live good lives. When opportunities present themselves to act in a Christian way, most of us respond appropriately most of the time. This gospel challenges us to take this one step further. With an eye to the future, we must surrender ourselves to searching out opportunities to live the paschal mystery. There is such an urgency about discipleship that we cannot be passive in any way. Just as Jesus did all he needed to do to make his message known, so must we be as proactive in our own discipleship. (Living Liturgy, p.212)

Vincentian Meditation: “Admission into heaven is something money cannot buy. The only currency that has any value to secure our entrance is that of love. In a world where so many things can be bought with money, often our minds center more on money than upon love. What Jesus is trying to tell us is that money is a good servant but a bad master. When money is employed as a servant, it can bring joy and comfort to millions and especially to those who have little or none of it. But let money become our master, let it take the first place in our lives and it can be a tyrant. It can harden our hearts and blind our vision of the supreme realities of our existence. Millions of dollars passed through the hands of St. Vincent and he made every cent a good servant. Vincent regarded the money which he received or possessed as the “patrimony of the poor,” and so it was always to be used for the benefit of the poor.” (McCullen, Deep Down Things, p. 560)

In what ways are we challenged to make our money a “true servant” not a master?

In what ways do we ensure that money is just one of the blessings we are prepared to share with our neighbors?

was hosted in our NOC this past Saturday morning, 9/10

Forty-six participants from 22 of our Conferences gathered to share insight, friendship, and Vincentian zeal in a fast-moving sequence of sessions...and then stood still long enough for this quick picture which captured most of our participants. Onward with servant leadership!

Holiday Programs - Application Period Begins Soon

The holidays are just around the corner and our online application window for Christmas gift assistance will open on Monday, October 3. Those without access to the internet are welcome to use the computers in the NOC Education Center to complete the request.

Welcome Room Volunteers Needed

Are you looking for an additional way to live out your Vincentian calling? Do you have one morning or afternoon a week to share? Our Neyer Outreach Center (NOC) is actively looking for more Welcome Room Volunteers any day of the week to serve our neighbors.

Health Matters

A few items to share:

COVID vaccinations are available on a walk-up basis in our Charitable Pharmacy. We have received our first shipment of the Pfizer “Bivalent” COVID Vaccine Booster. This bivalent vaccine aids in protection against the two most prominent strains of COVID - the original and the omicron variant - and replaces all other previous booster recommendations. The White House released a statement this week indicating that this vaccine is being considered the first “annual” booster and anticipates recommending a version of this vaccine every year (similar to annual flu shots). This may mean that after receiving this dose, you may not be recommended to have another until next fall.

Here are some FAQs that may help in your decision to receive the booster:

  • Who can get the booster? CDC is recommending this booster for anyone 12 years and older who has already completed the primary vaccine series. You are eligible to receive this booster if you have not received any other booster within 2 months. Boosters exist for ages 5-11 as well, but our Pharmacy will not be providing these. Our Pharmacy is offering boosters to anyone who is eligible, including neighbors, staff, and volunteers.
  • Should I get the booster if I had COVID? A statement this week from the White House backed by CDC indicates that people recently infected with COVID can wait three months after infection to get the COVID booster. This has been shown to result in a stronger immune response.
  • Can I still get the flu shot? Yes, the CDC recommends receiving both the COVID booster and flu shot this year, and no wait time is needed between the two. You can even receive both shots in the same visit.
  • When can I get the booster? Our Pharmacy continues to offer vaccines without an appointment during open hours at either location (NOC, M-F 8am – 4pm; Western Hills, TWF 10am – 4:30pm).

Bank of America has selected St. Vincent de Paul as one of its partners to support FREE flu shots in partnership with CVS Pharmacy.

Watch for a voucher on our website which you may share digitally or in-print with our neighbors, but not with other organizations. A voucher is required for each person wanting a flu shot, so make sure you provide multiples for families. These vouchers may be redeemed for a flu shot at any CVS Pharmacy in our area, to be provided at no charge for individuals who do not have insurance or whose insurance does not cover the flu shot.

All adults and children (ages 3+) are recommended to receive the annual flu shot. This vaccine may be received at the same time as the COVID vaccine/booster. As a reminder, the Charitable Pharmacy does not have access to the flu shot on-site, but we can provide the COVID vaccine or bivalent booster.

UC’s Open School has returned to our NOC to provide free health screenings for our neighbors on most Saturday mornings from 9am-noon. Students (supervised by licensed professionals) from various healthcare areas provide these services. Screenings include blood sugar, oral health, & blood pressure. Health education consults are also available. Upcoming dates are: 9/17, 10/1, 10/15, 10/22, 10/29, & 11/5.

Conference Happenings

  • Our Lady of Lourdes Conference (Westwood/Western Hills) is proud to share the renaming of their food pantry: The Christian James SVDP Food Pantry. God bless you, Christian, and may you continue to radiate Christ for all you touch!
  • St Dominic Conference (Delhi) has recently attracted 5 new members to join in their good works. Welcome! May they find faith, friendship, service, and fulfillment in abundance in this Vincentian vocation.
  • Our Lady of the Valley (Reading) & Our Lady of the Rosary / St Matthias Conferences (Greenhills / Forest Park) are jointly hosting a pasta dinner on Saturday evening, October 8, to raise awareness of, and funding for, their good works. This fun evening will include raffle baskets and split the pot. Location is Our Lady of the Valley, 416 W Vine St, Reading, OH 45215. Voice of the Poor Corner: Trudy Thomas Reflects Upon Solidarity

A recent encounter helped me better understand our Catholic emphasis on solidarity. I was leaving a home visit when I encountered some children playing on the sidewalk, all too young to be playing without adults nearby. One toddler caught my attention. He looked up at me with weary eyes. Two thick streams of yellow mucous flowed from his nostrils down over his chin. He was clearly sick as well as tired and sad.  I wish I could say my first reaction was compassion, but I was seized with disgust. All that snot. The cracked concrete. The missing parents. Who was responsible for this awful scene? I hurried to my car.

Later the face of that sick little boy haunted me. I thought of my own grandchildren who have doting parents and grandparents and a bounty of toys. The drive to care for the young is powerful. Normally all parents go to great lengths to protect children. Something was terribly wrong in that scenario.

Pope John Paul remarked that “Solidarity is not a feeling of vague compassion or shallow distress at the misfortunes of so many people, both near and far. On the contrary, it is a firm and persevering determination to commit oneself to the common good; that is to say to the good of all and of each individual, because we are all really responsible for all.” (St. John Paul II, On Social Concern, no. 38).

Although many speak of “the common good”, it means little if we seldom encounter those in deep suffering. Catholics are often segregated from others whose homes and faces don’t look like ours. A friend observed, “Here in America there’s a third world country that most people pretend doesn’t exist.”

“Solidarity” becomes real through home visits.  We smell the hallways, we see the overflowing garbage cans and broken sidewalks. We sit at kitchen tables and listen to the stories.

After encountering that little boy, I learned to pray past my disgust. In time, its focus shifted from that boy to larger forces. I grew disgusted with the income inequality that fosters despair. Disgusted with drug traffickers, and with a society so focused on superficial needs. Through prayer, my initial disgust gradually morphed into persevering determination. I recommitted to home visits and to my advocacy work with Voice of the Poor. I grew determined to help others enlarge their comfort zone.

Meanwhile, I now carry a few tiny vials of bubbles in my purse. Bubbles invariably bring a big smile and open a way to connect.

Trudy is a passionate member of our St Bernard Conference (Spring Grove Village) and active in Voice of the Poor. If you would like to explore our Council's Voice of the Poor opportunity to make a lasting difference - and how you can partake with fellow Vincentians, please contact Jane Phelan at JanePhelan02@gmail.com .

The Home Visit

The home visit, as practiced by St Vincent himself long before our Society came into existence, and by Blessed Frederic Ozanam and his contemporaries at the genesis of our Society, remains the differentiating element of our Vincentian vocation among numerous ministries and service organizations. We are overjoyed to see so many Cincinnati Vincentians re-engaging with our neighbors in this interaction - so personal, so mutually lifting.

Becky Catino Women's Stability, Employment, and Empowerment Program

From Tara Kerrigan, Program Manager:

Meet Ms. Employment. Ms. Employment was referred to the Becky Catino Women’s Stability, Employment, and Empowerment Program by SVDP’S Re-Entry Program. Ms. Employment has the distinction of being the first program participant and was accepted at the end of June 2022. When she was accepted, Ms. Employment was only making $15/ hour. After working with the program for two months, Ms. Employment was offered a higher paying job making $18/ hour. Part of the services offered for program participants is being provided with a professional reference. Ms. Employment will be starting a training program in October which SVDP will be paying for her to attend.

To learn more about this program's purpose, structure, aspirations, and opportunities, please contact Tara at 513.345.1772 or tkerrigan@svdpcincinnati.org . You can also find a link to the recording of our recent Resource Spotlight at the Members page of our website.

More Resources for our Conferences and Neighbors

Conference Assistance Fund (CAF)

We, together, have extended $740,192 in total FY2022 CAF assistance for the 11 months ended 8/31/2022, including $79,960 to 189 households in August.

Additional August summary data:

  • You submitted 250 fresh applications (highest monthly total to-date)
  • We approved 189 applications; 4 were withdrawn; 1 was declined; & 1 was transferred for ERA consideration
  • We were forced to temporarily suspend approving and extending assistance during the final few days as we had fully deployed our augmented provisions of $80,000

September activity to-date:

  • You've submitted 90 fresh applications
  • We've approved 130 applications
  • We have 51 applications currently in-process

Please take note of our high volume of CAF applications. Our augmented September funding is $80,000; we already have submitted applications on-hand to fully extend this funding. While our CAF exists to be extended to your/our neighbors, please also seize opportunities to help our neighbors experiencing need to access governmental programs for which they may qualify and other publicly- and privately-funded assistance resources. This is particularly relevant for neighbors navigating chronic budgetary shortfalls. Examples include SNAP, SSDI, and the OWF & PRC programs administered by Hamilton County Job and Family Services ("JFS").

We offer thanks to those Conferences & their donors who have recently twinned through CAF. We also appreciate the direct twinning activity between Conferences with surplus funds and those experiencing more need than the funding they organically attract. If your Conference is currently blessed with funds exceeding 2-3 months of your normal operating outflow, please know that we have fellow Conferences in search of funds to invest in lifting neighbors right now. We invite your Conference to discern if twinning is your best available act of faithful stewardship.

Thanks to our volunteers who are processing applications so promptly, and to Olivia & Alec.

Publicly-Funded Emergency Rental Assistance Program (ERA 1 & 2)

As you were recently informed, we are wrapping up processing of your previously-submitted ERA 1 applications (Hamilton County) in collaboration with CAA.

We cannot accept or process any additional ERA 1 / CAA cases. We must complete processing & approval of existing ERA 1 cases by this coming Wednesday, 9/21 (revised date).

Please watch for upcoming info on our ERA 2 (City of Cincinnati) program...and note the Resource Spotlight on Thurs, 9/29, promoted earlier in this edition.

Rahe Beds Fund & Program

All September bed requests have been processed. You should have received an email through Jotform with the voucher numbers and CMS instructions. We are happy to report that we’re able to accept two additional bed requests per Conference for September. Please submit them using the online request form.

If your Conference is considering purchasing beds to extend as assistance, you can get info, including current pricing, or purchase by contacting Dave Chidlow, Stores Retail Resource Manager, at dchidlow@svdpcincinnati.org or 513.853.1002. Your purchased beds will be picked up at our CHRC within our Liz Carter Center. Please be aware that our beds cost and resale pricing have risen significantly.

We still have pack ‘n’ plays available for neighbors with children too young for beds (under age two). These do not count against the limit of two Rahe beds per household per lifetime. If you have a neighbor who is in need of one, please contact Phuong at rahebedfund@svdpcincinnati.org . We will provide the neighbor with a voucher that can be redeemed at our CHRC.

Do you have questions about our Rahe Beds Fund & Program?

You can find the most updated Bed Fund Conference Guide in the Members section of the SVDP website.

Metro Bus Passes (Everybody Rides Metro)

Your Conference has access to Metro bus passes to be extended to neighbors for use for any of 3 defined purposes:

  1. Commute to/from new employment
  2. Commute to/from our Bank St services hub or other community social services
  3. Commute to/from medical appointments

Please understand that these passes are sourced through the Everybody Rides Metro program and our Council is required to comply with the above-referenced usages and submit reports of passes distributed. Please also understand that your Conference will need to record bus passes extended in CMS for the neighbors receiving this assistance. Our Bus Pass Guidelines sheet for Conferences is available to you on the Members Support page of our website https://www.svdpcincinnati.org/conferences-members/member-support/

or use this link to go directly to this document
