Update from the President & CEO:

Friends of the Gateway Region,

As we approach the end of another great year in Virginia’s Gateway Region, It is fitting to reflect on the many successes we have had in the region.

Over the past twelve months, we’ve brought our story of economic development opportunity to targeted conferences and industry events across the country and even across the Atlantic. VGR has specifically focused our marketing and lead generation efforts on distribution and logistics companies, controlled environment agriculture enterprises, data centers, and the pharmaceutical industry.

For example, we went to six different pharmaceutical and biotechnology events this calendar year. This targeted approach allowed VGR to focus on growing the supply chain for our emerging pharma cluster in the Gateway Region. Why did we do this? Because we saw production begin for the first drugs from the new manufacturing facilities of Phlow Corporation and CivicaRX located in Petersburg. This is just another milestone that signals to the world that our pharma cluster is the place to be.

In the coming year, we’ll continue to advance efforts to deliver shovel-ready sites for all types of industries. With the investments being made to increase our capacities of power, water and integrated transportation, we will be better able to meet the tight development timelines for companies that make things and move things - companies that are in industries like manufacturing and distribution and data centers. And we’ll start a new chapter by helping companies find solutions to workforce challenges facing the modern economy.

We’re grateful for the support that every VGR member has contributed to our vision of unifying the region for economic prosperity, and we look forward to engaging in new opportunities in the year ahead.

I wish each of you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Honored to be a Good Neighbor to Fort Gregg-Adams

We're honored that our efforts in boosting the economic health and future of our region were recognized last week. The region was among a stellar slate of other amazing people and organizations that received 2024 Fort Gregg-Adams Good Neighbor Awards. Maj. General Donahue presented the awards at a Civilian Military Council meeting hosted by Dinwiddie County.

Raising Awareness for Pharmaceutical Manufacturing Opportunities

Last month, we partnered with the Alliance for Building Better Medicine to host industry leaders for a familiarization tour focused on the pharmaceutical cluster in Petersburg. The two day event allowed us to offer details on the extensive assets and advantages to expanding pharma manufacturing in the Gateway Region, including tapping into an existing supply chain.

How Education Serves as Critical Link to Vibrant Localities

Educating students and building a vibrant locality fit together like pieces of a jigsaw puzzle, according to William Fiege, Ph.D., president of Brightpoint Community College. In other words, the college becomes the critical link in connecting local residents to fulfilling careers and regional employers to a skilled, adaptable workforce.
