The Festival of Trees is an annual holiday tradition that transforms the Whaling Museum into a winter wonderland for the month of December! Marine is the Lead Sponsor again this year.
Opening in 1944 as a lumberyard, the business expanded and in 1973 changed its name from Marine Lumber to Marine Home Center. The theme of our tree is, "Marine Home Center's 80th Anniversary". The centerpiece "80 Years Serving Nantucket", is made from wood and stained to highlight the roots of Marine Lumber Company. Many wooden 80's hang from the tree in gold, silver and white.
We would like to thank all of our customers for their continuous support, as we enter our 80th year serving Nantucket.

Getting Ready for a New Year | |
The fresh trees have arrived and their smell is positively intoxicating. How is it we never tire of that reminder of the season? Whether you’re celebrating here or off-island, Housewares has all the fixings for a Nantucket- themed Christmas. And the most popular item for this is the locally made, scallop shell tree lights in 3 different lengths, as well as scallop ornaments by islander, Maika Johnson. Shop early - they go fast. Houseware shelves are bursting with tree lights (a new item: lights that are synched through your phone!), exquisite glass ornaments, and candles, soaps and lotions with delicious holiday scents. I couldn’t resist the pots of red Poinsettias for my holiday table. They looked so good, I went back for more to line my steps! The Appliance Department continues selling off its existing inventory of refrigeration, cooking, and laundry appliances.
Shop the many in-stock items, including priced reduced displays and floor models before they're gone. All are ready to take home or be delivered.

We’re investing wide spread campus improvements and merchandising updates to begin Marine's next 80 years. | |
The existing stairs in the Appliance Showroom have been removed to open up the space for window and door displays. The second floor will be converted to Building Materials sales offices, conference room, and a training room. This new showroom will be closer to Marine’s main store, lumber yard, and Lumber drive-through facility. | |
The Appliance Service Staff and Technicians will relocate by the end of 2023 to the retail space near Wicked Island Bakery. | |
The Hardware department will be expanding into the carpet sample space. In addition to new fixtures and a merchandising update, there will be an expanded assortment and increased inventory of builders hardware and fasteners, as well as some new products like marine hardware. | |
New carpet sample racks are being constructed in the Home Furnishings showroom. Design Consultant workstations have been relocated for better customer coverage and expanded window treatment offerings. A reimagined Dash and Albert boutique is in progress, including the new addition of washable rugs. | |

After Christmas, Orange Street window replacement in Housewares will begin. When done, an expanded small electric appliance selection will be available, including microwave ovens, room air conditioners, and dehumidifiers.
After building repairs in the Garden Department, there will be an expanded Yeti and other cooler assortment, reimagined bird seed area, and expanded inventory of hoses.

The White Cedar Shingle market is finally on the mend and the shortages and lead times have improved. We are pleased to announce we have White Cedar shingles back in stock and available for immediate sale in our yard. Our current stock includes:
A Grade shingles – clear throughout the entire shingle.
B Grade shingles – knots and blemishes above the 6” from the butt end.
A/B Grade Shingle – equal mix of both A & B grade in the same shingle “arriving early December”.
A/B Grade-stained Dark Gray (HDC approved in most area’s) – contact us for details.
This new A/B grade is an equal mix of both A and B grade in the same bundle. The industry is moving in this direction to reduce production lead time and get product out to the market in a timelier manner. All grade of these white cedar shingles in stock are re-squared and re-butted.

Lasers are common enough today that they attract little notice in their wide variety of applications. Of course it was not always so. In the building trades we relied on spirit levels, water levels, and optical transits for precise plumb and level layout. The introduction of lasers to the job site has greatly simplified accurate preparation, from rough framing to the installation of finished cabinetry.
While most lasers are not necessarily more accurate than the tools we used before, the available 360° horizontal and vertical reach makes them unbeatable for marking the perimeters of entire rooms, even over uneven surfaces. They can light a line through inside corners, outside corners, and through doorways into adjacent rooms if desired. One small pencil mark gives a reference point allowing the laser to be set up in exactly the same place day after day if needed.
There are a number of other uses for lasers on the job site: distance and depth measurement, cutting guides on miter saws, even as pointers for highlighting objects out of reach. And playing with cats, of course. All of which brings me to this piece’s title.
In 1963, this seventh grader wrote a paper on lasers for Mr. Porter’s science class. The father of a school mate worked at Bell Labs on this new-fangled discovery that, as of then, had no practical application. He gave me several copies of “Scientific American” and away I went. As this subject was beyond Mr.Porter, he had the Bell Labs man grade it.
One of the things I reported was that the US Army was looking into the use of lasers. When I got my paper back, there, written in red pencil in the margin, was “If they are, they’re wasting their time!”

Cold weather is an important concern for painting, especially in exterior conditions. Latex based paints - or any paints with water components - are susceptible to freezing. Temperatures below 40 degrees are not recommended for painting. Even if temperature highs during the day are acceptable, nighttime lows can still affect the cure of your paint coat. In situations where this cannot be avoided, a solid coat of primer can help provide adhesion for your paint, even as freezing ingredients stop your product from leveling or coalescing properly. A thicker coat may be applied to help adhesion, but might be more harm than help, depending on just how cold it gets. As we move into the winter season, consider taking the time you have for interior, well-heated painting projects, and get the most quality and efficiency out of your paint. | |
