What is courage?
While exploring in Africa during the 1800’s, Dr. David Livingston, a well known author, medical missionary, and explorer, received a letter from some friends which read “we would really like to send other men to you. Have you found a good road into your area yet?”
Dr. Livingston replied “If you only have men who will only come if they know there is a good road, I don’t want them. I want strong and courageous men who will come if there is no road at all.”
Courage consists not so much in avoiding danger but rather conquering it. We should all be striving to master our fears so we can get on with the wonderful things life has in store for us, even when there appears to be no road on which to travel.
So the next time a legion of voices are shouting their unanimous permission to give up out of fear, remind yourself that you didn’t ask their opinion. Drown out the voice of uncertainty with the sound and courage of your own heart beat, and when you decide to turn your back on what’s comfortable or safe, you might just profit from what life has to offer…
