Sport History Spotlight: Democrat’s Lifetime of Achievement
If horses were recipients of Lifetime Achievement Awards, U.S. Army-bred Democrat would be a top contender for the honor. Democrat was a Thoroughbred foaled at Ft. Robinson, Nebraska, in 1933 and shipped as a 4-year-old to the U.S. Cavalry School at Ft. Riley, Kansas. Democrat and Col. Franklin “Fuddy” Wing were champions at the 1940 National Horse Show and selected for the 1940 Olympics (cancelled because of World World II). After the war, Wing and Democrat were Individual fourth at the 1948 London Olympics. Democrat then qualified Capt. John Russell for the 1952 Helsinki Olympics, finishing with Team Bronze. Later that year, Democrat and Bill Steinkraus won all eight individual classes they entered on the 1952 fall indoor circuit, jumping 150 jumps without fault and helping the USET win the Nations Cup at the Toronto Royal Winter Fair. Democrat was retired to USET President Whitney Stone’s Morven Stud and died there in 1957 at age 24. Democrat and his three riders are all Show Jumping Hall of Famers.
