FACULTY AND STAFF SPOTLIGHT SERIES | Stacey Floyd

We recently chatted with Dr. Stacey Floyd, Professor of English, Director of the Center for Faculty Support and Teaching Innovation and the Dean of Faculty Development, about the many hats she wears and ways she helps keep campus running through her professional

roles.

What is your academic and professional background?

“I taught high school English for 13 years and loved it. However, I wanted to know more and go deeper and left that to pursue a Ph.D. in English from the University of Kentucky, which launched my (late) career into higher ed. I’ve been in higher ed now since 2002 and at my previous institution, I similarly went from department chair to a center director.”

How long have you been employed through TU, and have you held any positions here prior to the current?

“I joined TU in 2018 as an Associate Professor of English and the Chair of Undergraduate Humanities. In 2021, I became our Director of the Faculty Center and in 2022, the Dean of Faculty Development.”

What do you love most about TU?

“I love the diverse population of students, the focus on first-generation and diversity and the nimbleness of the institution to adjust to changing times. I also love the smallness and the way we all know everyone.”

In your eyes, what is one thing that makes our University unique?

“We have that nimbleness to adjust. We demonstrate this through curriculum revision and program review. Our mission is unique for a private university. We embrace online learning and understand that higher ed is changing rapidly. We blend the practical with the creative in our

school structure and we are constantly looking ahead.”

How do you stay involved in our campus culture in addition to your official job responsibilities (attending football games, choir concerts, guest lectures, etc.)?

“I am a big fan of the commercial music and arts here. I attend gallery exhibits, incorporate them into my classes where I can and I attend the music performances as much as I can. I know students feel validated and supported when they see their professors in the audience.”
