OIP-u:TU | Presents Guest Speaker This Week
| |
On November 16, 2022, Tiffin University’s undergraduate student chapter of the Ohio Innocence Project (OIP-u:TU) will host guest speaker, Robert McClendon at 7 p.m. in the Osceola Theater. McClendon was wrongfully charged and convicted of kidnapping and raping his 10-year-old daughter and spent 17 years in prison for crimes he did not commit.
McClendon steadfastly maintained his innocence, but the courts denied him the right to a DNA test three different times. The Ohio Innocence Project got involved after working closely with reporters from the Columbus Dispatch in 2007 and 2008 to evaluate cases where the defendant was wrongfully convicted and denied DNA testing. He was freed on August 12, 2008 when an Ohio lab conducted a DNA test that definitively proved McClendon's innocence.
McClendon's story is about failures of the criminal justice system, the power of investigative journalism and continued racial discrimination that he faced after his release from prison.

GIVING IS GOOD! | A Message from Advancement
| |
The following message is from Mikki King, Director of Annual Giving -
Each year, employees have the opportunity to support Tiffin University's mission and students through personal philanthropy. This is an important cause. Why? Because your donations go to scholarships, emergency funds for our students, the annual fund, athletic teams and more.
Tiffin University also applies for several grants and gifts from corporations and foundations each year. Many funding sources request information about the percentage of campus family giving; this is a vital piece of information. That’s why gifts of all sizes are important - it is about the support for the University. Supporters want to know that the people who know us best (our campus family) support the University and its mission. All your gifts, added together, do amazing things for our students.
Currently, our participation rate for staff and faculty is 56.32%.
Our goal for 2022-2023 is 78% - but we need your help to get there.
For more information or to set up a meeting to learn more, please contact Mikki King at kingmr@tiffin.edu.

CELEBRATE INDIGENOUS HERITAGE| TU Engage
| |
The following message is from the Tiffin University Office of Student Engagement -
Throughout November, the Office of Student Engagement will be celebrating and recognizing the contributions of American Indians with a series of special events as part of Native American Heritage Month. In 1990, President George H. W. Bush approved a joint resolution designating November as “National American Indian Heritage Month.”
Similar proclamations, under variants on the name (including “Native American Heritage Month” and “National American Indian and Alaska Native Heritage Month”), have been issued each year since 1994.
Since 1990, Congress has authorized an annual presidential proclamation that designates November as National American Indian Heritage Month to encourage all people to learn about the contributions and cultures of the Indigenous peoples of the North American continent. Such recognition, however, dates back further with state and organizational recognition of Indigenous peoples' days and commemorations occurring at the turn of the twentieth century. For example, Dr. Arthur C. Parker, a Seneca Indian and co-founder of the Society of American Indians in 1911, organized American Indian Day beginning in 1915. More recently, Columbus Day, which is recognized on the second Monday of October, has been reclaimed in cities across the United States as Indigenous People's Day.
Please join the Office of Student Engagement this month as Tiffin University celebrates and learns more about the experiences, histories and heritage of Native and Indigenous communities.
Our first program for Native American Heritage Month is with the Smithsonian. Please click the link below to access a virtual program on The Removal Act entitled, "Trail of Tears: Not what you think. Not even close."
Here is the complete schedule of events and programs for this year's Native American Heritage Month:
Nov 18-25 - Native Cinema Showcase (National Museum of the American Indian) Movies on demand (link will be emailed)
Nov 19 - Trip to Fort Ancient Earthworks and Nature Preserve in Oregonia (must register for this event)
Nov 21 - 8 pm Osceola Movie Night Presentation "Imagining The Indian: The Fight Against Native American Mascoting"
Nov 25 - National American Indian Heritage Day- Land Acknowledgement Map Project (link will be emailed)
Nov 29 - "Nation to Nation: Treaties Between the United States and American Indian Nations" virtual presentation sponsored by the Smithsonian
We hope you will take part in these educational programs and events

Employees may begin enrolling in plan options in Paylocity-BSwift starting on November 21, and it closes on December 2, 2022.
If you have any questions regarding learning the benefit plan options and projected pricing in 2023 prior to November 15 so you can compare and plan with a spouse's options, etc..., please feel free to reach out to me, and I will be happy to review it with you.
All employees must complete open enrollment in BSwift even if you are not selecting medical insurance coverage.
Please do not hesitate to let me know if you have any questions.

"FROZEN IN TIME" | Diane Kidd Gallery to Host New Exhibit
| |
From November 7, 2022 to February 10, 2023, Tiffin University’s Diane Kidd Gallery will feature work from the University of Toledo’s (UT) plastination laboratory entitled, “Frozen in Time.”
The show’s reception will be Friday, November 18 and will begin with a presentation by Dr. Carlos Baptista, Founder of the UT Laboratory of Plastination from 4 to 5 p.m., followed by an opening reception from 5 to 7 p.m. Light refreshments will be served. This event is free and open to the public.
The “Frozen in Time” specimens on display are part of a permanent collection of anatomical and pathological specimens from the Liberato DiDio and Peter Goldblatt Interactive Museum of Anatomy and Pathology. Each year, thousands of community members come to the University of Toledo to visit the museum’s exhibition and UT’s Gross Anatomy Lab.
The science of plastination involves the use of polymers – silicone, polyester and epoxy – to replace water and fat to preserve biological tissue. Once plastinated, the tissue is stable and able to be displayed without deterioration. The exhibitions include dissection projects performed by students and faculty at the University of Toledo’s College of Medicine.

STAFF SPOTLIGHT SERIES | Chelsea Bass
| |
We recently chatted with Chelsea Bass – Assistant Director of Student Success & Coordinator of First-Year Experience – about the many roles she fills and hats she wears
as an integral part of the campus community.
What are your day-to-day responsibilities?
“My day-to-day responsibilities change depending on the time of year. During the academic year, I’m helping students, meeting with peer mentors, pulling reports, committee meetings and collaborating with colleagues. During the summer, I am working hard with the campus to plan Welcome Weekend!”
What is your academic and professional background?
“I have a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration degree specializing in management from Bowling Green State University, and a Master of Business Administration degree with a concentration in human resources management and leadership from TU. Tiffin University was my first place of employment after completing my undergraduate degree!”
How long have you been employed through TU, and have you held any positions here prior to the current?
“I have worked at Tiffin University since 2014 in the following positions: Undergraduate Admissions Counselor, Senior Admissions Counselor, Registration & Records Coordinator, Student Success Advisor and now I’m the Assistant Director of Student Success & Coordinator of First-Year Experience.”
How do you stay involved in our campus culture in addition to your official job responsibilities (attending football games, choir concerts, guest lectures, etc.)?
“I love attending Tiffin University’s athletic and TiffinArts events! I advise four teams, but have students in class who are involved in a variety of things, so I do my best to support the students I advise and teach. Also, I enjoy participating in campus events and competitions like the trick-or-treat trail, homecoming hallway decorating, the ugly sweater contest and the Circle K game nights at the Kiwanis Manor.”
