Q. Beyond Design:  Your career spans a diverse range of projects. How has your unique approach to design evolved, especially in projects that involve community outreach and social responsibility? 



A. For the past decade, I’ve worked at AC Martin, a firm rooted in a culture of community service and volunteerism. Guided by my mentors, I realized that architectural practice serves not only clients but also contributes to society. This perspective shaped me into a strong advocate for designing equitable communities and reinforced my belief that serving our community and society is a vital responsibility of architects.

Councilmember Ysabel Jurado is a former tenants rights attorney, affordable housing activist, single mom, and daughter of undocumented Filipino immigrants. Born and raised in Highland Park, she attended Pasadena City College and put herself through college at UCLA, where she completed her bachelor’s degree. After graduating, she went on to UCLA School of Law, where she graduated with a Juris Doctorate with specializations in Critical Race Studies and the David J. Epstein Program in Public Interest Law and Policy.

THE CALIFORNIA REBUILDS DESIGN COMPETITION AWARDS

This awards event is the culmination of the California Rebuilds design competition, showcasing the power of Passive House in creating innovative, sustainable, healthy, and diverse fire-resilient communities, in various styles that reflect the vibrancy of Los Angeles.

Winners will be announced and the entries exhibited for viewing. To kick things off, there will be a panel discussion about designing and building fire-resilient communities with panelists to be announced from an array of perspectives. Drinks and light food will be served.

AIA|LA & LADWP DEVELOPMENT SERVICES: 2025 QUARTERLY MEETINGS

For the past 36+ months, AIA Los Angeles and LADWP have been organizing a quarterly series of roundtable discussions, which serve as an opportunity to further connect the architecture community and LADWP development services personnel. These quarterly roundtables help to establish a more collaborative partnership and facilitate opportunities to identify solutions to achieve mutually beneficial outcomes.

In general, the quarterly meetings serve as forums to:

1. Build trust and understanding between LADWP personnel and the private sector (architects/ designers/ engineers).

2. Develop compassion and empathy to better understand each other’s professional priorities and implementation tactics.

Board Election 2026: Candidate Town Hall Video is Online


To help our members get to know this year’s nominees, and understand what programs

and initiatives the candidates propose to bring to the table, we presented a virtual Board

of Directors 2026 Candidate Town Hall on October 6.

Each candidate had 4 minutes each to share their platform, followed by an opportunity

for Q&A with the audience.

AIA Los Angeles is pleased to jointly organize Safety Assessment Program (SAP) training with Structural Engineers Association of Southern California (SEAOSC). 

The Safety Assessment Program (SAP) utilizes volunteers and mutual aid resources to provide professional engineers, architects, and certified building inspectors to assist local governments in safety evaluation of their built environment in the aftermath of a disaster.This SAP training provides these professionals with the basic skills required to perform safety assessments of structures following disasters. 



The program is managed by the California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services, Cal OES, in cooperation with professional organizations. Cal OES Recovery SAP issues registration ID cards to all SAP Evaluators that have successfully completed the program requirements.

We encourage you to become SAP certified by registering for this training to be held on October 25, 2025 (Saturday), from 9 am to 3 pm, at John A. Martin & Associates, 951 S. Olive Street, 4th Floor, Los Angeles.


Please make sure to register by October 23 (by the end of the day).
