FMA Member Companies Display Life-Saving Skills from Kabul to the Home Front | |

As the U.S. government raced to evacuate troops, citizens and allies from Afghanistan in August, Dan Van Wagenen received a surprising and urgent request.
“About a week before the deadline for the U.S. withdrawal, I got a phone call from one of the government customer leads,” said Van Wagenen, Vice President of Cyber Operations at CENTERPOINT, an FMA Member. “The person said, ‘We are pulling all hands-on deck and stepping in to coordinate the evacuation of U.S. citizens and allies from Afghanistan. Can you help us?’”
From the peace and comfort of an office in the Mid-Atlantic, it’s easy to overlook the vital role that Fort Meade Region contractors and FMA members play in keeping warfighters and others safe when they face imminent harm. Yet many FMA member companies such as CENTERPOINT, CACI and Black Eagle Defense provide that vital, life-saving service every day. And some discover they can leverage their skills to provide vital aid in the midst of a crisis.
“This was work I never thought we would be doing,” Van Wagenen said.

Students Learn from the Pros at Tech Mania | |

This fall, the FMA hosted its signature Tech Mania — offering five virtual presentations to schools across Maryland. From Cybersecurity and Resilient Design to building a computer, students learned technical details from local professionals at Lockheed Martin, National Security Agency and Leidos while also hearing about the various career opportunities they could pursue.
More than 100 students from St. Mary’s County, Anne Arundel County, and Harford County public schools attended the presentations.

How do you create a delicious and nutritious meal using just a mug and a microwave?
Dr. Shari Youngblood, an instructor for the Maryland University of Integrative Health, knows how to do just that and aims to teach this important skill to military personnel as part of a nutritional cooking class at Fort Meade.
With a target audience of single soldiers and others with limited cooking supplies and space, Dr. Youngblood will lead class participants through a series of lessons designed to help them develop basic skills in the kitchen.

Throughout Veterans Day weekend in November, WBAL-TV11, NBC featured the anticipated programs and services that will be centrally available through the new Education and Resiliency Center at Kuhn Hall. Two segments were broadcasted – the first piece gives an overview of the facility and the inspiration of its inception while the second piece is a live interview of FMA Foundation President Deon Viergutz.

Inaugural Cyber Pipeline Learning Series Concludes
On Friday, November 12, the FMA wrapped-up the Cyber Pipeline Learning Series with a final session focused on recruiting (and training) diverse talent in the workforce. Building on themes from this past spring’s Cyber Workforce Shortage Forum discussion with Dr. Freeman Hrabowski, President of UMBC and Maureen McMahon, Deputy Superintendent of Anne Arundel County Public Schools, panelists engaged in a conversation about the types of diversity needed in the cyber workforce of the future.

On November 4, the Rising Stars Network welcomed Roxanne Wood, CEO of Boeing Intelligence & Analytics, for the kick-off event in their new Executive Speakers Series. Hosted at Tensley Consulting, Roxanne led the intimate group in a conversation about the skills needed to make it in the executive suite. Sharing what keeps her up at night and how she handles those stressors, Roxanne provided excellent insight for those with executive ambitions.
