Cyber sleuthing and the personal touch are key to successful recruiting
Eighteen months after completing his degree and starting work with a Fort Meade contractor, the gifted high-tech professional tendered his resignation. There weren’t any problems between the young man and his employer. But another company had offered him a raise of $65,000 and a benefits package that included a 17-percent employer contribution to his 401k.

“It is a very, very competitive marketplace,” said Katie Casey, Talent Placement Director at CACI.

On top of the recruiting challenge created by the limited pool of technology professionals with security clearances, Fort Meade contractors also now face growing competition from employers in commercial sectors.

“Commercial companies are definitely targeting people with clearances more now because of the growing interest in big data analytics,” Casey said. And some of those companies are beginning to match the premium salaries typically paid to cleared workers
DoD contracts to include new cybersecurity requirements
Experts in defense contracting are advising small and mid-sized businesses to start preparing for the looming rollout of the Cybersecurity Maturity Model Certification (CMMC) program.

Developed through the Department of Defense’s Office of the Undersecretary for Acquisitions and Sustainment, CMMC is designed to make cybersecurity a foundational component of all DoD programs and contracts, CMMC Director Stacy Bostjanick told attendees at the Fort Meade Alliance’s Small Business Conference.

Once implemented, the CMMC will enforce the Defense Federal Acquisition Regulation Supplement (DFARS) and National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) 800-171 frameworks for all DoD contractors who touch controlled unclassified information (CUI). Based on preliminary drafts, the regulations will require contractors to meet multiple requirements within 17 security domains.

The framework also includes five levels of certification depending on the extent of a contractor’s cybersecurity. Contractors will have to be assessed by an independent auditor to receive CMMC certification and will have to be re-audited at least every three years.
Kiosk project puts resiliency at your fingertips
Fort Meade personnel and family members will soon have a new way to access resiliency services from mental health resources to nutrition counseling to music camps for kids.

Members of the Fort Meade Alliance have been constructing a Resiliency Resources kiosk. In recent months, members of the Military and Family Committee and the Education Committee researched local resources that fall under the five Resiliency pillars – Family, Emotional, Physical, Spiritual and Social. Meanwhile, interns at Next Century created the beta version of the kiosk. FMA aims to install kiosks at prominent locations on post, such as the Post Exchange (PX) and Kimbrough Ambulatory Care Center, in the coming months.

“This is a wonderful, valuable resource and very easy to use,” said Lisa Terry, Manager of the Howard County Office of Veterans and Military Families, and a member of the FMA Military and Family Committee.
