Linking Nutrition to Resiliency

The curriculum for three new workshops designed to make healthy eating easier for service members and their families is currently being finalized. In partnership with the Maryland University of Integrative Health, the workshops will help participants navigate around obstacles such as limited cooking supplies, minimal kitchen space, barebone appliances and tight budgets so that cooking healthily is less overwhelming.

Standing on the shoulders of one of the five pillars of resiliency — physical — we believe achieving proper nutrition is one of the cores of holistic health.

Workshop #1: Meal in a Mug

GOAL: Teach participants how to prepare homemade meals using nothing but a mug, very few utensils and a microwave.

Workshop #2: Healthy Meal Planning on a Budget

GOAL: Teach participants how to plan, shop for, and prepare healthy meals on a limited budget.

Workshop #3: Smart Shopping

GOAL: Teach participants how to shop for healthy foods on a limited budget.

Pilot workshops are currently being planned for early Spring and will be held in community kitchens on Fort Meade until the renovation of the Education and Resiliency Center at Kuhn Hall opens in late 2022.

About the 5 Pillars of Resiliency

From the FMA Foundation

We are very pleased with the progress of the renovation of the highly anticipated Education and Resiliency Center at Kuhn Hall — the elevator shaft is installed, framing for drywall is going up and furnishings have been ordered. Shown here is a rendering of one of the classrooms that will be used for education programming and services to support the unique needs of service personnel, their families, veterans and the DoD community.

We are currently on schedule to open doors in late 2022!

Attendees Applaud Program Content at DISA Small Business Conference

The 2021 DISA Small Business Conference on December 9 at the BWI Hilton was a huge success! Attendees heard firsthand from DISA’s Deputy Director Chris Barnhurst as he elaborated on the strategic intent of DISA’s recent organization change. The breakout sessions included a step-by-step explanation of the facility clearance (FCL) process by Defense Counterintelligence and Security Agency (DCSA), a discussion of the Other Transaction Authorities (OTA) process and the relationship with Dreamport (a project of MISA) and DISA’s Technical Exchange Meetings, an overview of what the source selection team follows for evaluating proposals and all the documentation that goes into justifying the winning contractor and a humorous presentation presented by the Office of Small Business Programs (OSBP) about what not to do when competing for OSBP’s attention.

2021 President's Reception

Thank you to the 150+ FMA members and non-members who attended the 2021 President’s Reception on December 15 at the BWI Hilton. The festive spirit was quite evident as guests gathered to kick off the holiday season together, give kudos to the many FMA milestones this past year and gear up for all that’s to come in 2022. The vibe was also overflowing with generosity for the recipients of USO’s Project Elf, an annual initiative that supports military families during the holiday season!

Wreaths Across America Honors Veterans

FMA’s Rising Stars Network opened an invitation to the FMA community to join their Wreaths Across America volunteer team on December 18. Along with many other volunteers, the group hand-placed wreaths at Annapolis National Cemetery where the local ceremony was held. By the end of the day, more than 3,000 wreaths were placed to honor veterans and their families during the holiday season. Nationwide, more than 2 million wreaths were placed by over 2 million volunteers who participated at one of the 3,136 ceremonies, a third of which were children volunteering with their families.
