Housing Update

Thanks to support from our donors, volunteers and concerned community members, we are happy to announce that this month three families have moved in permanent housing!

One of those families is Janet, a single mother who came to Family Promise of Essex County seeking shelter. An FPE case manager quickly placed her and her daughter in a motel room. FPE continued to provide social services to get Janet back on her feet.

By providing a hand up, we are happy to announce that Janet and her daughter just moved into their new home!
FPE is Launching Circles Essex this October!
Circles Essex is a community-driven solution to poverty. Circles Essex program works to increase upward mobility for individuals and families in poverty in Essex County, New Jersey. Based on the national Circles®USA model, the Circles program builds intentional relationships (social capital) across socioeconomic lines that help open up long-term pathways for economic mobility and self sufficiency.

Circles is about building intentional relationships across income lines. While middle-income and high-income families enjoy networks of support through their jobs, schools, and neighborhoods, families living in poverty rarely develop such contacts. Many who live in poverty are hardworking and motivated. When a circle of support forms around them, advice is offered, contacts are shared, and the fears that keep people in poverty start to disappear.

Help a Child Access Learning Opportunities
To be successful in learning and development, children need access to summer camps, workshops, community activities, computers, internet, desks, access to tutors and school supplies at home.

Thank you Daniel Greenberg for working with FPE to promote childhood literacy! “I have created REACH to make sure that homeless children do not fall through the cracks in regards to literacy. REACH stands for Reading Encourages Achievement, Creativity, and Hope. I am working with the FPE shelter to put a Kindle in the hands of homeless children. I had learned recently that the frequent school transitions and extended absences that come along with homelessness have a significant impact on youth literacy. I know my time reading as a child helped me become who I am today and I wanted to help others get the same joy out of reading. I chose to use kindles rather than books because children experiencing homeless move frequently and often have little storage space.” ~Daniel Greenberg
