A Funhouse Story
When six-year-old Jessica (not her real name) was welcomed through the doors of Funhouse Commons Summer Camp, she carried with her a deep, indescribable loss. Her mother had passed away suddenly, leaving Jessica and her father to navigate a world forever changed. While her father had to return to work, Jessica found herself in an unfamiliar space—one that, in time, would become a second home.
At the Funhouse Commons, we believe that every young person deserves to have a place of belonging, support, and inspiration. For Jessica, the camp was more than just a summer activity—it was a sanctuary. Surrounded by our kindhearted staff and a welcoming community of peers, she was given the space to grieve, process her emotions, and rediscover joy at her own pace.
Each day brought new experiences: art projects that allowed her to express emotions she couldn’t put into words, outdoor adventures that reminded her how to smile again, and quiet moments when she simply needed to be alone. Understanding her unique needs, our team created a special area where Jessica could retreat whenever she felt overwhelmed—a place where she could cry, reflect, or just breathe.
But Jessica was never alone, caring staff was always nearby, ready to listen, to comfort, and to let her share her mother’s memory in her own way. Their patience and kindness made all the difference. Little by little, Jessica opened up, finding solace in the friendships she made and the unwavering support of those around her.
Today, Jessica is a reminder of why Funhouse Commons exists. We are more than a youth center—we are a family. A place where every young person is welcomed, supported, and inspired. A place where healing happens, where discovery unfolds, and where no one has to go through life’s challenges alone.
Jessica’s story is one of many, and it reminds us that it truly takes a Village, and the Funhouse.
