Coaches Corner with Coach Keith Gilbert

Is your Tennis game up to par?

Next time you hit the courts for your next match, be sure to bring your golf bag and full set of clubs. You ask, “What in the world does that have to do with tennis?” Even if you know very little about golf, most know you have a different club for different shots; large drivers to carry your shots far, irons with a little more control as you get closer to the green, a sand wedge to get you out of trouble, and a putter to accurately sink your putt. Just as you would never play a round of golf with just one club, tennis players should not rely on one shot to win every match.

Start thinking of your tennis matches like a round of golf. Not only is there a time and place to use all the shots in your repertoire, you also don’t want to overuse your favorite shots too often. Keep your opponents guessing. Don’t give them chance after chance on returning that big serve up the middle. If you do, they are likely to start getting some or all of those shots back and one of your big weapons may be neutralized. So next match -- slow down, think about mixing shots up, and make sure you are not leaving any unused clubs in your bag. See you on the courts!

We all love to play...

RAC has some basic court rules that we would like all members and guests to keep in mind.

  • When approaching a court that already has players on it, please allow them to complete the play prior to walking on the court as a means of access to another court. Do not enter the court if reserved, until the prior game is completed.
  • Be respectful of your neighbors, please keep volume at single court levels and any speaker faced towards the club.
  • Foul language, unsportsmanlike conduct and/or paddle abuse are not acceptable on the courts at any time.

Thank you!
