Education Spotlight: Don’t Let Cold Weather Freeze Your Riding Progress
Check out the
January issue of In Stride
where four riders share their tips on staying warm in the saddle while training during the winter months!
"Going around and around in an indoor can be mentally tiresome and result in a sour horse and an unmotivated rider. Using the winter to focus on different aspects of your riding can be a great way to combat boredom.
[Ohio native Annie] Irwin focuses on flatwork and technical adjustments that will help her two horses in the show ring. 'Instead, we practice adding strides, leaving strides out, lengthening and shortening. We do little exercises with ground poles.'"

Sport History Spotlight: Developing Young Riders
For young riders in the 1960s and 1970s, national equitation finals and US Equestrian Team training sessions were pathways to high performance jumper divisions. Regional training trials were held across the country each year where riders would be selected to attend two-week training sessions at USET headquarters in Gladstone, New Jersey, with USET Coach Bert de Nemethy.
Here’s a look back to Buddy Brown working through one of de Nemethy’s gymnastics at Gladstone in 1973, the year he won the AHSA (USEF) Medal. Buddy went on the make the USET and to win the 1974 Dublin Grand Prix, Team Gold at the 1975 and 1979 Pan Ams, Individual Silver at the 1975 Pan Ams, and to compete in 1976 Montreal Olympics. Today’s Lindsay Maxwell Charitable Fund/USHJA Emerging Athletes Program, as well as a wide range of equitation championships, give riders at even younger ages an opportunity to start on the developing rider pathway.
