February 2019
February is American Heart Month

Alarming new information from the American Heart Association (AHA) reveals that nearly half of all adult Americans have cardiovascular disease, the leading cause of death for both men and women. This new data stems from recent changes in the AHA's guidelines definition of high blood pressure, which was lowered in 2017 to 130/80 mm Hg, down from 140/90 mm Hg.

Lifestyle plays an important role in heart health. Getting regular exercise and solid sleep, following a healthy diet, keeping weight in check and reducing stress go a long way in reducing your risk of heart disease.   If your blood pressure numbers are cause for concern, give our office a call.  Our team can help you reach your heart health goals using natural therapies that are effective in lowering blood pressure without medication.  Let us be your partner in your heart health journey!

Yours in Health,

Dr. Keri Chiappino and Dr. W. Brent Reynolds

Don't Worry, Be Happy for Heart Health

Heart Rate Variability (HRV) is a relatively new concept in heart fitness training that measures the variation in time between each heartbeat to provide insight on the effects of stress on the body.

Emotions like anxiety, frustration, and irritability can shift the heart rhythm into an erratic pattern, worsening depression or anxiety, and increasing the risk of hypertension, stroke and even death.  L earning to regulate the heart rate through rhythmic breathing exercises and promoting positive emotions like joy and happiness can help the body adapt better to stress, feel calmer, less anxious and more focused. The more this is practiced over time, the greater the heart rate variability and the better chances for longevity and adding happiness to your years.

Heart Math is a heart rate variability training program that helps reduce stress, balance emotions and increase performance through real-time feedback. At New Life Wellness Center, we use this technology program in conjunction with our BrainCore neurofeedback training program to help develop a smooth, consistent heart rate to promote "coherence" -- namely, balance and harmony -- and enhance mental functioning. Check out Dr. Chiappino's video above to learn more about becoming more mentally and physically fit and more resilient to stress through the Heart Math program, or call our office at 631.265.1223.

Researchers Discover Strong Link Between
ADHD and Migraine in Adults

Results of a new
study by the Danish Headache Center and the Institute of Biological Psychiatry in Denmark identified a strong association between Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)and migraine in middle-aged adults.

Researchers found that adults with ADHD, both with and without the hyperactivity component of the disorder, were nearly twice as likely to experience migraines than those adults without attention disorders.  In addition, ADHD was most prominent in study participants who experienced migraine visual disturbances such as  distorted or altered vision.   The comorbid conditions were  most prevalent in people in their 50s, and were most often women, who account for more than three-quarters of the 38 million Americans who suffer from migraine pain.

QEEG-guided neurofeedback is a non-invasive, non-drug therapy for a wide range of neurological conditions including ADHD and migraine pain.  Contact our office to learn how to retrain your brain to relieve your symptoms with BrainCore Therapy.  631.265.1223

One or Two Joints Causes Brain Changes in Teens

A new study on marijuana use by young teens reveals that changes in the brain occur when even only small amounts of cannabis is consumed.

Published in the Journal of Neuroscience, the study is the first of its kind to focus on the effects on the brain from the first few uses of marijuana. Study participants included 46 teenagers who reported smoking marijuana once or twice before the age of 14. Brain scans showed a significant increase in the brain's gray matter, notably the amygdala, the area of the brain involved in fear and other emotion-related processes, as well as the hippocampus, which is involved in memory development and spatial abilities.

While the impact of the increase in gray matter is not thoroughly understood, study author Professor Hugh Garavan, Ph.D. noted that in normal adolescent development, the brain typically gets thinner as it refines or "prunes" its synaptic connections; the gray matter increase indicates that the cannabis disrupts the natural "pruning" process.

The news is significant as more states vote to legalize recreational use of marijuana. While it has been found to be beneficial for a number of health concerns such as pain, nausea and anxiety, this new study raises grave concern for younger individuals who may be more predisposed to emotional or cognitive problems later in life as a result of the structural changes in the brain.
