ECONOMIC OUTLOOK
Q1 2020: What to watch in Q1 and beyond
by Lara Rhame
Chief U.S. Economist, FS Investments
Lara Rhame, Chief U.S. Economist for FS Investments and a member of the Hyperion Bank Board of Directors, writes: "The U.S. economy enters 2020 coasting on the longest expansion on record. The consumer has been the main positive driver of growth, but business sentiment has weakened notably. We expect growth to moderate closer to the long-run trend pace of 1.7%. This gradual slowdown could re-ignite growth concerns, revive policy uncertainty and make it harder for financial markets to gain traction.

Record-long economic expansion set to continue

Thank household consumption for the record economic expansion. Through 11 years of growth, the longest uninterrupted stretch on record, the household has offset isolated weakness in the energy sector (in 2015–2016) and sluggish business investment and trade-related uncertainty (2018–2019). Indeed, over the past five years, consumption has grown faster than the overall economy in all but three quarters.

Given the importance of household spending for our overall economy, this sector rightly deserves close attention, and the good news is that the outlook is positive. The labor market has bolstered consumer confidence, but the household balance sheet deserves credit, too. Households have increased savings during this expansion and lowered leverage levels. This not only supports current consumption, but provides an important buffer against future headwinds or an uptick in uncertainty."

FEATURED BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT
Hyperion Bank welcomes and supports local businesses who make our communities great places to live and work. We hope you'll join us as we introduce you to businesses and friends who make our neighborhoods unique!
Introducing...
TULA YOGA + WELLNESS
737 N. 4th St., Philadelphia, PA 19123
Successful entrepreneurs say the best way to start a business is to identify a problem and solve it--and it helps if you are passionate about the problem you plan to solve. For business owners and best friends Jenn Curren and Carly Markowitz, the problem was finding yoga and wellness services in the Northern Liberties neighborhood where they live. Their solution was to start Tula Yoga + Wellness, which opened in December 2019.

"We saw that there were not many options for yoga and additional wellness services in our neighborhood, so we felt that if we were looking for these services, others might need them, too. And as members of this community, it was important for us to serve the neighborhood where we are already so immersed," say Jenn and Carly. "Running a business with your best friend makes it feel less like work. We are really passionate about the yoga services we provide, and having everything so close to home isn't bad either!"

In creating Tula Yoga + Wellness, Jenn and Carly are "on a mission to build a community space where people can come together to practice yoga, connect with one another and enjoy some much needed self care." Their yoga studio offers classes for all levels in alignment-based Vinyasa (their passion) seven days a week, plus daily classes in Yoga Basics, Rise and Flow, Gentle Flow, Restorative Yoga, Well Women's Yoga, Family Yoga, and strength-training Strength and Flow classes.

The business partners say that they love banking with Hyperion for a number of reasons: "First, it was important to us to support another business in the neighborhood, and the personal attention really sealed the deal. As first-time business owners, the employees at Hyperion were incredibly helpful and supportive in helping us get our business up and running."

Jenn and Carly invite everyone to try a class or workshop at Tula Yoga + Wellness: "We offer classes for people of ages and skill levels including basics, open levels and even family yoga! Visit us at tulayogaphilly.com for the full class schedule and workshop list!"
