Hyperion Bank Director Jim McAlpin discusses good bank governance for Bank Director
Hyperion Bank is proud to have James ("Jim") McAlpin, Jr., a partner at Bryan Cave Leighton Paisner, serve on our Board of Directors, which regularly benefits from his professional expertise. Bank Director, a leading information resource for senior executives and directors of financial institutions since 1991, recently asked Jim to discuss "Four Essential Governance Practices" for banks. In the short video below, Jim shares recommended practices for bank boards, based on the 2020 Governance Best Practices Survey. Click on the image below to hear Jim's guidance, which we follow here at Hyperion Bank.
Throwback Thursday
It's "Throwback Thursday"! This photo ran in a 1984 issue of PHILADELPHIA Magazine, when it featured the University of Pennsylvania's cheerleading squad as real-life models for a fashion feature story.

So who's the young man on the right? That's Hyperion Bank Chairman and CEO Charlie Crawford during his undergraduate years at Penn, where he earned dual degrees from The Wharton School--a BA in Economics and a BS in Management.

In addition to the squad, Charlie played on the Penn tennis team in his sophomore year.

Did the magazine let him keep the sweater? Ask Charlie at ccrawford@hyperionbank.com.

FEATURED BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT
FRANK HYDER, ARTIST
Meet internationally acclaimed contemporary American artist, Frank Hyder
Philadelphia folks may recognize Frank Hyder's work from the Philadelphia Museum of Art--which has five pieces in its collections--or the James A. Michener Museum, the Woodmere Art Museum, the LaSalle University Art Museum, his solo show at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, or three outdoor murals (he was a master muralist with Philadelphia's Mural Arts program), among other prestigious collections. Our Atlanta friends may have seen Frank's remarkable work at the King Plow Art Center, in private collections, or in the Bill Lowe Gallery located close to our Atlanta office, which has represented Frank in Atlanta and throughout the South since 1991. Frank is also represented by Denise Bibro in New York and by Ode To Art in Singapore, which shows his work in Hong Kong and across Asia.

Frank is acclaimed around the world for his paintings, water colors, prints, and sculptures in fiberglass, bronze, and inflatable nylon. If you've cruised on Norwegian Cruise Line, you may have seen his works on most of their ships--or met him, as he spends about two months each year at sea as an artist-in-residence aboard ship. His Janis Project is a travelling art installation which has been seen in China, Russia, Israel, London, Paris, and along the European coast. Currently, Frank's work is part of art shows in Boynton Beach, Florida, and Bogota, Colombia.
Although he now lives in Miami, Frank lived near Hyperion Bank's Philadelphia office for 38 years, and has continued his banking relationship with us. Frank says he enjoys banking with Hyperion because: "Hyperion is about the people. It's a small local bank with people interacting with people, neighbor like. I get the service I need but also the attention I did not expect. A visit to the bank is a visit, not a chore."

During his Philly years Frank was a faculty member in the University of Pennsylvania's Master of Fine Arts graduate program (where he earned his own MFA degree), and was also chairman of Fine Arts at Moore College of Art and Design. Among his many awards and accomplishments, he is the recipient of a Senior Fulbright research grant to Venezuela, grants from the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA), international travel grants, and grants from the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts.

Writing for HuffPost in 2016, contributor Myra Chanin described Frank Hyder as "the American Picasso." Learn more about Frank in the video above, and visit his website at FrankHyder.com to see more of his work and access additional videos about this fascinating artist and his life in art.
