Once again, thank you classical music lovers for your resounding support of WBJC! Because of YOU we were able to end the Winter Pledge Drive over 4 HOURS EARLY! We love what we do, and it continues to humble us that it also means as much to you. We truly could not do this without you!
And a hearty "Thank you" to the hard-working volunteers and the food donors who kept us all sustained.
Over next week, the Membership team will begin sending out the 'bill me' pledges as well as acknowledgements. There are a couple premiums that we need to replenish, so there will be a slight delay in sending those out. If you need to get in touch with us about a pledge, send an email to membership@wbjc.com. Thanks!

At the start of Black History Month, we honor a towering figure in the abolitionist movement, William Still — not to be confused with the Dean of African American composers, William Grant Still. Historian at Towson University, Andrew K. Diemer, talks about his William Still biography, Vigilance.

On Saturday, February 11, there will be a historic Metropolitan Opera broadcast not heard since it was aired live in 1970: Leonard Bernstein leading Mascagni’s Cavalleria Rusticana, part of a double bill with Leoncavallo’s Pagliacci, in a celebrated production by Franco Zeffirelli. This special broadcast is timed to mark the centenary of Zeffirelli’s birth.
Leonard Bernstein’s appearances at the Met were rare. In this broadcast of Cavalleria Rusticana, the legendary conductor leads a cast starring Grace Bumbry in her first Met run as Santuzza, and Franco Corelli in his only Met broadcast as Turiddu. Fausto Cleva conducts the performance of Pagliacci, which stars Richard Tucker in his first Met broadcast as Canio, opposite Teresa Stratas as Nedda.
From the 1960s through the 1990s, Franco Zeffirelli created twelve productions for the Met. Two of them – La Bohème and Turandot – remain audience favorites to this day. His production of Cavalleria Rusticana and Pagliacci premiered in January 1970, a month before this broadcast, with Bernstein and Cleva conducting. Listeners can hear this treasure from Met radio history, “Celebrating Franco Zeffirelli,” on the Saturday broadcast at 1 p.m. ET on February 11th right here on WBJC!

Neighborly disputes over property lines are as old as time. From February 2-26, GALA Hispanic Theatre in DC is presenting Jardin Salvaje, or Native Gardens, written and adapted by Karen Zacarias. I recently spoke with Ms. Zacarias and director Rebecca Aparicio about the production and how the show is about the clash of both generations and cultures.

Recently I did a podcast for the Candlelight Concert Society on Robert Schumann’s masterpiece Kreisleriana. The piece is inspired by E. T. A. Hoffmann’s writings about his fictional alter ego the Kapellmeister Johannes Kreisler.
The work is also influenced by Hoffmann’s writings about the tomcat Murr, with whom and by accident, Kreisler shares his biography.
Therefore it was only natural that I share the podcast with our cat Chou Chou (named for Debussy’s daughter Claude Emma) who shares her appreciation for Kreisleriana at the end of the podcast! I think E. T. A. Hoffmann and Schumann would approve.
