Get A Move On

Dear Friends,

There is still a few hours left for Thursday!

Thursday is my errand day. I have plenty things to do in town, people to see, maybe have lunch with my husband. I better get a "move on" as we say in the south. Today may not be your errand day but I know you have one.

Do you have your list made before you go shopping? A list is so freeing, except when you forget and leave it at home. I have had to turn around to go back home many times because when I commit the items we need to my list; I dismiss it from my mind.

We are all so good at making to do list and never even looking at them again. This is why I love my routines. I don't have to think any more about what needs to be done.

My Control Journal and establishing one habit at a time is what keeps me from running around like a chicken with its head cut off.

Believe it or not one of the main things on my list today is to buy cleaning supplies. I don't recommend many. I love my Windex and Dawn Dishwashing liquid. When you run out of the things your routines tend to fall by the wayside.

Have you started your list for this week's shopping trip? If not get it out and get a "move on"! "Times a wastin'!" I keep my notepad on the end of the kitchen counter. Everyone uses it.

Be sure an put your grocery bags and cooler in your car before you leave!

Are you ready to FLY Through your Errand Day?

Ask FlyLady

Please Explain the Zones

Dear FlyLady,

I went on the website because I am still confused by the zone cleaning: how do the zones rotate? what do you do? How does the detailed cleaning list fit in (I printed that). It is ambiguous to me - I see the individual e-mails come out but can't quite put them together into a whole picture.

Thank you for your help,

Liane

Dear Liane,

You don't have to see the top of the staircase to take the first step. I promise it all fits together.

Many of you have had questions about the zones. I hope I can clear this up.

We are breaking our homes into 5 zones, but we are using my zones so that we will all be on the same page. After you graduate, you can break your house into what ever zones you choose. Right now we are all together.

Let's look at a calendar, in most months the days fall over parts of 5 weeks, sometimes 4 and other times 6. Look at a whole years worth of months. My zones start on Sunday.

Here is how the zones are laid out.

Zone 1, occurs during the first week of the month. Some months have only has a few days in this first week, but in some months we have a 5 days to concentrate on our entrance, front porch, and dining room.

All I ask is that you spend 15 minutes a day working on your zone for that week. If you still have lots of clutter, work on clearing this clutter, 15 minutes at a time first. Then you can do your detailed cleaning later after the clutter is gone. Let's face it, you have not cleaned cobwebs or dust bunnies in several months or maybe years, so don't get overwhelmed here. I don't want you to burn out. 15 minutes a day, consistency is the key here. That is all.

Zone 2, is the kitchen. Most of our kitchens need a full week of cleaning, (only 15 minutes a day). This is usually the first full week in each month.

Zone 3, it the main bathroom and one other room in the house. (kid room, extra room, office, craft room, utility room.) Don't do two really bad rooms at once. This is usually the 2nd full week of the month. Only do 15 minutes at a time or a day. Take it easy. The consistency will get you to your goal 15 minutes at a time.

Zone 4 is the master bedroom. This is usually the 3rd full week of the month, 4th week if you count the parts of week 1. We clean our closets, bathrooms and bedroom. But if there is serious clutter, this has to go first. 15 minute at a time. Your master bedroom, is the room that is most important in your life. This is where you rest, clutter keeps you from resting well. Get rid of this clutter and find your oasis.

Zone 5 is your living room. This zone is on the 5th week of the month. Usually it only has a few days. Then the month ends and the next month starts. Zone 1 and Zone 5 usually happen in the same week.

I hope this has straightened out zones for the time being. Look at the calendar and write them down if you have too. This is how I had to do it, to get it into my head.

Don't forget, All I ask is 15 minutes a day. Set a timer and just do a little every day. You will see a difference in a week's time. In a month you will start to notice a trend in your home. You can do this. It didn't get dirty in a day and it is not going to get clean overnight. It is going to take a few months of decluttering and then detail cleaning to make your home the place of peace you want.

Many of you are trying to do zone cleaning, while you are doing your Weekly Home Blessing Hour. Don't do this. In fact, it is more important that you concentrate on your morning and before bed routines, before you should even do your Weekly Home Blessing Hour. Your morning and before bed routines and declutter 15 minutes a day. That is all I expect of you.

Here is how it all fits together. Get your routines established one habit at a time. Then add new habits as your old ones become second nature. As you home starts to come together. Then throw in the 15 minutes a day decluttering. As you home becomes clear, the Weekly Home Blessings are a piece of cake. There will not be stuff to vacuum around and dust.

My whole house looks great all the time, with just my morning and before bed routines. Even if you do nothing else, your home will come together.

Quit trying to see the big picture, and focus on your BabySteps. You don't have to do it all at once, BABYSTEPS.

April's Habit: Making Your Bed

April's Habit #25 Keeping Me on Track

Dear FlyLady,

I've been following you on and off for a few years now. Admittedly more off than on. I'd stick to routines for a few weeks then something would happen and for some reason it would all go wrong. This year I decided it would be different.

Started the year by shining my sink following my control journal then after a few weeks the same thing happened that always happened it just went wrong.

March I decided enough was enough and had a really long think about what I could do to to make this work . March, It started with my control journal, I had all the sections set up like it says in your page but for me it was too much. I scaled it right back to just my every day routines and things that have to be done in certain days like putting the rubbish out for collection. I don't feel so overwhelmed anymore.

And although I don't always follow it to the letter it's keeping me on track.

April

Aprils habit for the month is to make your bed. Now I never and I mean never made my bed, what was the point I was only going to mess it up again It was just new sleeping in it so what did it matter? I had more clothes in my floor than I did in my cupboards. And was a general dumping ground as things just got tossed in there when I had company (as no one ever went in my room)It just wasn't a restful place at all!! I had a focused declutter session over a few days.

Got rid of 15-20 (yes you did read that right) bags of old clothes that I didn't love, and general clutter. I discovered I had a carpet under all that!!

I bought new curtains and nets for my window. Moved my bed round and put in new bedding. I got a small laundry basket and as soon as its full I put a wash on, then as soon as the laundry is dry it's folded up and put away, no matter how late it is or how tired I am. I make my bed every morning my room looks beautiful now. I have even found a way to keep my clean bedding together and ready to grab when it's change day, I was always misplacing a pillow case so never having a full set to put in my bed I now fold my duvet cover and one pillow case together and pop it I to the other pillowcase, and do the same with my under sheets. This keeps it all in one place ready to just grab when it's time to change it no having to spend half hour hunting for stray pillow cases!!!

I have concentrated in keeping my room looking clean and tidy. And have kept it up for the past 24 days. I'm really looking forward to next months habit so I can add that in and work towards having a chaos free home.

Thank you!!!

Ann Uk FlyBaby

April's Habit: Making Your Bed

Welcome to April! It’s a brand new month and that means it’s time for a brand new habit.

This month, we are concentrating on Making Your Bed. This one small step makes a huge difference in the look and feel of your room. Here’s some great information from FlyLady to get you started.

Your bed in the bedroom is what the sink is to your kitchen. – FlyLady

This Week we are in Zone 4; our Master Bedroom, Bathroom, and Closet!

This week we are working on Zone 4: The Master Bedroom. It also includes any bathroom you may have off the master bedroom, and whatever lurks in the bedroom closet. This will be an ongoing process. You may or may not get the entire room cleaned this week. That is not the objective. Any thing you do in this room now will be an improvement over the way it was last week. Next month you will focus on it again.

Your bedroom should be the cleanest room in your home. Many of you still use yours as a garbage/clutter disposal for the rest of the house. If your bedroom is clean and clutter free, then it becomes an inviting haven for building your relationship with your spouse. The best gift you can give your children is a strong marriage. This is true whether your children are 2 or 40 years old.

Your task is to declutter this area. Spend 15 minutes a day this week doing something, anything, in the master bedroom. It did not get dirty in a week and it will not get clean in a week, but you will be making head-way. It is a trend! Get in the habit of decluttering in small segments of time. Decide what time of day you are going to tackle this little job, set a timer for 15 minutes, and just do it.

Friday is our day to clean out our cars and purses; then plan something for date night!

We use each Friday as our Declutter your Purse and Car day. This only takes a few minutes and saves us lots of time later. Without the candy wrappers, old receipts, and other trash in your purse, finding your car keys becomes a breeze! Removing all the clutter and trash from your car ensures that you won't be hit by any UFOs (Unidentified Flying Objects) in the event of a crash. Set aside a few minutes just for these two tasks each Friday. Here's a list of things to toss:

  • Old gum and candy wrappers
  • Soda bottles
  • Scraps of paper/old receipts
  • Drive thru bags and cups
  • Jackets/coats/shoes

Set your timer and get to it.

"Decluttering is contagious!" ~ FlyLady

Friday is also Date Night. Relationships have to be nurtured. If not, you are going to wake up one day when the children are grown and not know the person you chose to spend your life with. It is up to us to make sure we grow together! Now don’t think I am going to leave out you single people! We all have relationships! Some are marital and others are friendship. As for those friendships that you have let fall by the wayside because your home was too messy for people to come over, it is time to pick up the phone and just say hi!

Relationships are not just inanimate objects; they are made of people with feelings. When we open up our hearts and let someone else in, we become better people! We can’t just ignore the relationship and expect it to stay the same. People need attention! You need attention! If you give it, it will come back to you! I promise.

Zone 4 Mission #5 Friday

Dear Friends,

Today is the day to remake your bed. This may take a little longer than usual but so well worth it. Strip your bed and remake it. Get someone to help you flip the mattress, if you can't then try just to turn it around. If you have some fabric spray spritz your linens or if you have had any colds or flu's in the house lately consider spraying your mattress and pillows with an anti-bacterial spray. Then place those crisp freshly washed sheets and blanket on. Take extra care when making the bed.

Really tuck those corners in and fluff the pillows. An extra tip is to toss your pillow in the dryer with a dryer sheet for added freshness and fluff. Use your bedspread or comforter and make up the rest of the bed. Take your time and know how much you will enjoy getting into your bed tonight and how wonderful it will feel.

Maybe tonight you will go to bed a little earlier or stay in bed a little longer tomorrow morning just taking some time to enjoy something so simple yet rewarding.

FlyKid Mission #5 Friday

Hi Kids,

Today is really easy - check your bedroom floor for any paper clutter that you do not need and toss it in the recycle bin or the trash can. Check your floor for things that you do not need, love, or use!

Five Star Review

The FlyLady is Such a Good Motivator! I Don't Cringe When People Pull Up Unannounced. I am Happy!

I highly recommended this book for any type family or single person no matter what age you or your children are. I was a fly baby for a short time years ago and recently, I found you on fb about 6 months ago. I ordered the book and have really enjoyed the revival in my heart and my house.

AMAZON

I used to cringe in agony when I would see people pull up in the driveway now I don’t. Just like Marla says the husband has started organizing and getting rid of his stuff too. The teenage boys are a work in progress. I loved the tips on , the delicate cycle, storing sheets under the bed( I’ll Have more room in my linen closet and that’s major when you are limited on closet space like us) .

The FlyLady is such a good motivator! I have found my self quoting her and singing the songs. Earlier I was cleaning and was upset about something having water spots and Marla popped in my head and said “that’s your protectionism “ and I moved on.! I so wish I would have stuck with The Flylady years ago when the kids where younger but, so glad to have her now.
