BabyStep Your Way to Routines

Dear Friends,

For several years I have been telling you that our new habits don't form over night; that it takes time to establish your routines. They don't happen just by osmosis. You have to practice them daily.

We are sidetracked. It takes us a little longer to develop our routines, so we can run on auto-pilot. This is why routines are so efficient. We don't have to think, we just do without having to put our mind around it and talk ourselves out of doing. We all know about those excuses we make in our heads; I can do that later, I don't have enough time to do it right! I like to call this stinking thinking.

Psychologists tell us that it take 21 days to establish a new habit. I feel that if we do the same thing every day for a whole month, we are well on our way toward our goal. It doesn't matter if it is exercise or making your bed. We all know that it is next to impossible for us to do something for thirty straight days. So we factor in ten more days for good measure, throw out the guilt for missing a day and after a month you have done it enough for the habit to stick! I am so proud of you!

My routines took me almost nine months to establish. I did this one habit or two at a time. Do not overload yourself with a full-blown routine on the first day. This is more of your perfectionist thinking. You are not required to be good at this the first day! Now do not beat yourself up. We are looking for progress not perfection!

Did you know that you can start over each day and sometimes I have done it in the middle of the day? I pull out my timer and pretend that my morning is beginning all over again. Then before you know it, you are back on track. The guilt is what keeps you in your CHAOS. Let it go and watch you take flight.

Routines take time to establish! If I can do this anyone can! BabySteps, BabySteps, BabySteps!

It all started with my Shining Sink! Are you ready to FLY?

Help Me Drink More Water

Hey FlyLady!

This may seem like a silly question but I cannot seem to drink enough water - I only drink about 8 oz a day at most. I'm not drinking a bunch of other stuff but I just don't like water I don't know what to do because I know it is a problem. Please Help!

Flykid Jess

Dear Jess,

Not drinking enough water can cause you to have no energy. As we say in the south, "Your get up and go has got up and went!"LOL

If you don't like water then we have to figure out a way to make water taste better to you. I am going to list some ways to make water more appetizing to you. The benefits of drinking water go from having more energy to beautiful skin.

1. Drink it cold. Our water bottle keeps your water cold for a long time.

2. Drink water with a straw. This way you can get it past your taste buds.

3. My Sweet Darling does not like water either but he loves water with a splash of Key Lime Juice over crushed ice. NO SUGAR just the tart taste of Key Lime.

4. At spas they slice up cucumbers or citrus fruit into a pitcher. This give the water a fresh flavor.

5. One of our members came up with the idea of putting frozen berries in her water. They make it cold and she gets a serving of fruit for dessert.

6. I know what it's like to not like water so I have learned to play games with me. I start out by drinking 8 oz before I leave the bathroom in the morning. This is just a small teacup. This one cup of water gets me started on a day of staying hydrated. When you drink you have to go to the bathroom. So every time I go into the bathroom I chug-a-lug another cup of water. Every hour I have to pee and I get 8 more ounces in my body. I keep 8 pennies on one side of my sink and I move one to the other side each time I drink a cup. I hardly know I am drinking my water. As part of my Before Bed Routine I fill my water bottle up with ice and water and put it in the bathroom. This way I have no excuse to start my day with a big drink of water.

7. I also keep my water bottle with me all the time. That way when I get thirsty I have it ready to go. I like to set my timer to remind me to drink. I keep colorful hair ties on my bottle and I roll one up as empty my water bottle and refill it.

If you make it fun, it will get done! Please do not drink more than 12 oz in a 30 minute period. Our habit for June is drinking our water. Get a jump start on this new habit.

March's Habit: Getting Dressed to Lace Up Shoes

March Habit #31 I Timed It

Dear FlyLady,

I have a large dog that needs to be walked every morning before I leave for work. We usually walk about two miles.

I have been getting up, putting on baggy sweatpants and a sweatshirt, pulling a hat over my bed head, and walking the dog - of course I was wearing shoes, but I don't think that the way I looked was anything like what FlyLady is suggesting!

In fact, I always hoped like crazy that I wouldn't see anyone on our walk! Well, the other day I did see a neighbor who wanted to chat and walk with me and I felt embarrassed about the way I looked.

When we got our March assignment to dress to shoes first thing in the morning, I thought I couldn't do it because it wouldn't fit into the time I have available. However, I decided to try washing my face, moisturizing, putting on a little blush, and combing my hair before I took the dog for a walk this morning. I timed it - it took TWO MINUTES! I dressed in cute but comfortable slacks, a fleece top, and my walking shoes. I felt great. I deserve to feel attractive even if I'm just walking the dog.

When we came back, I got breakfast for both the dog and myself, and then dressed for work. It was only a small change to my routine, and it was definitely worthwhile. I was even on time for work!

This habit is a keeper!

March's Habit: Getting Dressed to Shoes

March is here, and you know what that means — it's time to practice a new habit.

This month, we are going to work on getting dressed to shoes. This is such an important part of our day.

If we aren't dressed to shoes, we can't face whatever our day might throw at us! Here's some great information from FlyLady to help get us started.

With shoes on those feet of yours, your mind says, "Okay, it's time to go to work." ~FlyLady

Getting dressed to shoes is a very important component of the FlyLady system.

You can read about why FlyLady thinks getting dressed to shoes is so important in her first book, Sink Reflections.

The CHAOS Cure! ~FlyLady

This Week we are in Zone 1; our Entrance, Front Porch, and Dining Room!

This week our Zone is very important to our homes. The entrance to our homes make the first impression on our guests, our family and ourselves. When we walk into a clean and tidy home our whole attitude will be uplifted. This puts a smile of pride on our faces. We have gone so long, looking at such a terrible mess, that we have been ashamed to answer the door. I want you to get rid of guilt that accompanies clutter and CHAOS. To do this you have to get off your franny and start to declutter this area.

Your task is to declutter this area. Spend 15 minutes a day this week doing something, anything, in these rooms. They did not get dirty in a week and they will not get clean in a week, but you will be making headway. It is a trend! Get in the habit of decluttering in small segments of time. Decide what time of day you are going to tackle this little job, set a timer for 15 minutes, and just do it.

Monday is our day to Bless our Homes!

On Mondays, The Weekly Home Blessing hour is the time FlyLady spends blessing her home. No detailed cleaning required; vacuum the middle of the floors only! Set your timers and have fun - you are blessing your home and family!

FlyLady sets her timer for 10 minutes to work on each of 7 ways to bless your home: If you don't have 10 minutes then use our 2 Minute WHB Challenge.

  • Vacuum
  • Dust
  • Quick Mop
  • Polish Mirrors and Doors
  • Purge magazines/catalogs
  • Change Sheets
  • Empty all trash cans

You can have FlyLady coach you through the Weekly Home Blessing hour by listening to her.

This takes approximately one hour; some tasks take less than 10 minutes.

"Don't obsess, set your timer for 10 minutes for each task, then QUIT!" ~ FlyLady

Zone 1: Mission #1 Monday (I know it is the 31st. Let's get a full week in Zone 1.)

Dear Friends:

We are in Zone 1 this week, that is the Front Porch, the Entrance area and the Dining Room.

Today you are to sweep your front porch area around your front door. Shake out your welcome mats and wipe down your front door. This makes a huge difference in how your home looks. We have a tendency to neglect this area and yet it is the first thing that people see when they come to your home.

FlyKid Mission #1 Monday

Hi Kids!

We are going to do what is called a Hot Spot Fire Drill!

This is when we look around our rooms at the flat surfaces of our furniture. The desk, the dresser and the nightstands. These are the places that we will just pile things on instead of throwing them away or putting them away. These are the Hot Spots.

To help us clean these places up we are going to do a Fire Drill. We are going to set a timer for 5 minutes and see how much and can throw away and put away off of those Hot Spots.

Ready.. set.... GO!

We have a Student Control Journal for you, it's FREE.

Five Star Review

The FlyLady is Such a Good Motivator! I Don't Cringe When People Pull Up Unannounced. I am Happy!

I highly recommended this book for any type family or single person no matter what age you or your children are. I was a fly baby for a short time years ago and recently, I found you on fb about 6 months ago. I ordered the book and have really enjoyed the revival in my heart and my house.

AMAZON

I used to cringe in agony when I would see people pull up in the driveway now I don’t. Just like Marla says the husband has started organizing and getting rid of his stuff too. The teenage boys are a work in progress. I loved the tips on , the delicate cycle, storing sheets under the bed( I’ll Have more room in my linen closet and that’s major when you are limited on closet space like us) .

The FlyLady is such a good motivator! I have found my self quoting her and singing the songs. Earlier I was cleaning and was upset about something having water spots and Marla popped in my head and said “that’s your protectionism “ and I moved on.! I so wish I would have stuck with The Flylady years ago when the kids where younger but, so glad to have her now.
