What is Standing in Your Way

Dear Friends,

Have you never done a Weekly Home Blessing? I understand for some of you who work outside of your home or have little children, that putting together a full hour to bless your home is almost impossible but I have a way for you to do it without stressing you out.

The last thing I want to do is add more stress to your life. We are here to reduce your stress!

First I want to look at why you don't think you have time to do a Weekly Home Blessing Hour.

When your mother made you vacuum; you had to do it right! All the furniture had to be pulled out from the wall and vacuumed under. Dusting was another form of torture. Everything had to be removed from the tables. Oh let's not forget about mopping a floor. First we had to sweep it well and then we had to get down on our hands and knees to scrub the floor. If we tried to do it any other way it was not good enough.

No wonder we don't want bless our homes. As a child it was punishment.

Now hear this! This is your home not your mother's and you can bless it anyway you want to. Do your morning routine first, be dressed to lace up shoes and make sure you have your breakfast. Then you spend 10 minutes just one thing at a time. If you can't put together a full hour then do one thing each day or at the top of every hour.

Change sheets - I usually strip those off the bed as I get up. I have two sets of sheets for our bed. I allow the bed to air out till I get the rest of my morning routine done.

Empty all the trash - Grab the trash bag from the kitchen and run around the house and add the rest of the trash to it. Put it in your big garbage can.

Vacuum all rooms -- This is just the middles. Do it as fast as you can. Do not obsess about the lines in the carpet.

Cull/toss old magazines -- This take no time at all. Gather up all your old magazines and put them in the recycle bin or put them in the car to drop off at a Doctor's office or Car Repair place. They never have any good magazines.

Mop kitchen and bath - This is one of our most fun jobs. Yes you heard me right. Mopping can be fun if you will let go of your mother's perfectionism. Mopping is just putting soapy water down and getting it up off the floor. Along with it comes the dirt. There are lots of ways to do this. We have a great mop that helps with this; Your children can have fun too by putting them in their bathing suits and letting them slip and slid on their little bottoms. Use old towels and shaving cream. They will enjoy themselves and you will get a clean floor. It may take more than 10 minutes though. LOL

Clean mirrors and doors -- We have a tool for this job too. Our purple rags do the job in no time at all. Take a wet purple rag and clean off those dog paw print and children finger prints from the doors, and toothpaste splatters from the mirrors.

Dust -- This is not your mother's way of dusting. We have two great tools for this: Our feather duster and a detailed duster.

I use my feather duster to bless my home real fast. It only takes me about two minutes to feather dust my whole house. I use my detailed duster when I am doing missions in the zone we are in.

So you see Weekly Home Blessing can be an aerobic exercise or a once a day blessing. I keep my Weekly Home Blessing list on my bathroom door. I have a day of the week beside each one.

Weekly Home Blessing can be hard if you still have lots of clutter. You can't organize clutter; you have to get it out of your house. Clutter is standing in your way of you blessing your home.

Ask FlyLady

What Am I Doing Wrong

Dear FlyLady,

Thanks so much for helping me keep my housework under control! I do have a question or two: When you refer to the zones, are we to do work from the detailed cleaning lists and the missions we get?

And I seem to be doing something wrong. I feel like I am cleaning lots and lots! I NEVER get my Home blessing done in an hour, always takes me longer. I have a small house and it is just my husband and I. Am I just slow or am I overdoing it?

Help! Thanks

FlyBaby L.

Dear FlyBaby L.

You are not slow! You are a perfectionist! It is your perfectionism that makes you obsess about something that is quite simple. Doing the 5 minute missions will eventually check everything off of that detailed cleaning list! You are over thinking this. You don't have to see the top of the staircase to take the first step!

The secret to Weekly Home Blessing Hour is to set your timer and JUST do 10 minutes or even 2 minutes! That is it! Then go onto the next thing on the list.

There are only 7 things to do in Weekly Home Blessing Hour. Make a separate Post-It note for each one and put them on your bathroom mirror on Sunday Night:

Vacuum

Dust

Mop

Polish Mirrors and Doors

Purge magazines

Change Sheets

Empty all trash

On Monday set your timer for only 10 minutes per Post-It Note! You will find that it will not take all 10 minutes - that is why we have 7 things but call it an hour. Some things will take three minutes others will take 10. Put on some fun peppy music. You are working as fast as you can. You can spread them out over a day or even over 3 days. As you do them move the Post-It note to the inside of the medicine cabinet door.

I have a podcast for you! Weekly Home Blessing Hour!

Don't allow your perfectionism to get in the way of doing 10 minutes.

Housework done incorrectly still blesses your family!

Set your timer!

April's Habit: Making Your Bed

April's Habit #28 I Would Struggle

Dear FlyLady,

Making my bed every morning is a habit I've had my whole life, thanks to my mother, who expected it to be made every day. (Thank you, Mom!)

I remember when I was a teenager (maybe even younger), and I would struggle to make it. Then I invented a way to make it much easier for me to make my bed every day, and life became so much easier.

My problem was that I had a full-size bed and to have the covers (top sheet and blankets) centered and tucking them in on the far side of my bed was way too hard. I was just a little girl and that mattress was heavy! I hated doing it. Something had to change. Here's what I figured out to do instead: I started putting the sheets and blankets on so that they only touched the wall but didn't get tucked in. I tucked them all in on the outside edge where I got in.

In the morning, I would just throw the covers over so they met the wall, retucked in any parts that had come out, and I was done. I also had a bedspread, but most of the time it was folded and at the bottom of my bed, so I didn't use it every day, which was fine with Mom.

Anyhow, it made such a big difference in my life that I thought I'd share it with others. (Now, if only I could find a way to make it easier for me to wear my shoes...I stubbed my toe really badly last night and am still limping today. Baby Steps.)

Thanks for your ongoing encouragement...

Karen

This Week we are in Zone 5; our Living Room!

Zone 5 is the living room, family room, or den. But, only focus on one this week. After a few months, you will have them decluttered them all and the detailed cleaning will be a breeze.

Your task is to declutter this area. Spend 15 minutes a day this week doing something, anything, in this room. It did not get dirty in a week and it will not get clean in a week, but you will be making head-way. It is a trend! Get in the habit of decluttering in small segments of time.

Decide what time of day you are going to tackle this little job, set a timer for 15 minutes, and just do it.

Monday is our day to Bless Our Homes!

On Mondays, The Weekly Home Blessing hour is the time FlyLady spends blessing her home. No detailed cleaning required; vacuum the middle of the floors only! Set your timers and have fun - you are blessing your home and family!

FlyLady sets her timer for 10 minutes to work on each of 7 ways to bless your home: If you don't have 10 minutes then use our 2 Minute WHB Challenge.

  • Vacuum
  • Dust
  • Quick Mop
  • Polish Mirrors and Doors
  • Purge magazines/catalogs
  • Change Sheets
  • Empty all trash cans

You can have FlyLady coach you through the Weekly Home Blessing hour by listening to her.

This takes approximately one hour; some tasks take less than 10 minutes.

Zone 5: Mission #1 Monday

Dear Friends:

Check the floors in your living room. Look at that two inches all they way around the walls and baseboards that seems to get missed with the vacuum and the broom.

Your mission today is to use the vacuum and really concentrate on that area, you can also use a vegetable or toilet bowl brush (not the ones that you are currently using on veggies or the toilet, lol)to loosen the hair and dirt that gets caught up against the wall.

FlyKid Mission #1 Monday

Hi Kids,

Today we are going to go after all of our books. Let's take a walk through our house and look for any of our books that we have left around. Let's gather those up and return them to our rooms or where they belong in the house.

Once you have done this take a few minutes to look over your books. Is it time to bless someone else with some of them? Do you have some books that you just did not enjoy? Do you have books that you are no longer interested in reading again? Do you have books that you have outgrown? Today is the day to gather these up and take them to mom or dad and ask them to help you bless someone else with your books that you no longer need.

Remember what I always say: The less stuff to clean and put away means more time to play!

We have a Student Control Journal for you, it's FREE.

Five Star Review

The FlyLady is Such a Good Motivator! I Don't Cringe When People Pull Up Unannounced. I am Happy!

I highly recommended this book for any type family or single person no matter what age you or your children are. I was a fly baby for a short time years ago and recently, I found you on fb about 6 months ago. I ordered the book and have really enjoyed the revival in my heart and my house.

AMAZON

I used to cringe in agony when I would see people pull up in the driveway now I don’t. Just like Marla says the husband has started organizing and getting rid of his stuff too. The teenage boys are a work in progress. I loved the tips on , the delicate cycle, storing sheets under the bed( I’ll Have more room in my linen closet and that’s major when you are limited on closet space like us) .

The FlyLady is such a good motivator! I have found my self quoting her and singing the songs. Earlier I was cleaning and was upset about something having water spots and Marla popped in my head and said “that’s your protectionism “ and I moved on.! I so wish I would have stuck with The Flylady years ago when the kids where younger but, so glad to have her now.
