Are You on a Collision Course?

Dear Friends,

Procrastination has been a way of life for most of us. When we think a job is going to take longer than we have time for then we put it off. That is our perfectionism. We have been taught since the day we were born that if we can't do something right don't do it at all! We listened! We may not have heard much else that was said but that stuck in our minds.

Coupled with the pain of having to redo things over and over again when they were not up to the perfectionist standards; we just gave up before we ever got started. A lot of times we don't know where to start. This is the perfectionism monster again. The perfect place to begin! When we can let go of perfectionism; we can stop going down the path of procrastination.

I give you a place! Go shine your sink. It is a simple action that starts you in a direction toward peace. This is our very first habit! Keeping your sink clean and shiny is all you have to do. That shiny sink puts a smile on your face each morning. It is the only thing you have to do. With this one habit you are being kind to yourself. You are not piling on with a huge list.

As this one habit becomes automatic you can add another habit. Slow and steady relieves the guilt. This is being patient with yourself. You don't have to be perfect! You just have to do something instead of wring your hands and say I don't have time.

When you hear those words come out of your mouth, set your timer and do two minutes. You will be so surprised at what you can accomplish in those short two minutes. Don't allow your perfectionism to push you too hard or keep you from starting.

We have all heard the story of the tortoise and the hare. The hare procrastinated. He played and put things off because he felt like he had plenty of time to beat that slow tortoise. In the end he lost the race. Just imagine his stress level when he looked around and saw the tortoise winning. All of a sudden he got in a hurry! What happens when you get in a hurry!

Procrastination places guilt on our heads. We don't do well when well with this guilt and the stress that comes from waiting till the last minute. This stress is pushing our adrenaline buttons to put us into overdrive. So instead of taking your time and doing what you can, when you can; you are speeding down the highway to a head on collision!

Your adrenaline super fuel is what causes you to crash and burn! That "flash in the pan" burns out your engine and disables your thinking ability. You become the victim of your own procrastination. Please stop procrastinating! If you will only take BabySteps your journey will be slow and steady. Your home did not get dirty in a day and it will not get clean overnight! BabySteps will help you find the peace you are searching for.

Progress not Perfection!

My Trees are Still Up!

Hi, FlyLady!

Thank you so much for all of your encouragement! I found you when I was angry with myself over all my clutter and for some reason... surely a God-breeze... decided to clear out my emails late one night. I found an email from my cousin recommending your website. I shined my sink and read your book Sink Reflections. I flew fairly strong at first and am now fluttering with some struggling.

As you say we cannot organize clutter. And I have a lot of clutter. We have a small home with my DH, DD, DS, and me. I am a collector by nature and have trouble flinging for fear I'll regret it or need it later. And yes this all gets me in a procrastinated, perfectionist RUT which effects my mood daily.

Here I sit with my DD and DS's small Christmas trees still up in their rooms. I usually put up Valentines/Snowman decorations after Christmas (I love the cheeriness of decorating seasonally), and here it is Valentine's Day and I've never put them out! I just said to my DH last night that by the time I put our children's trees up they won't be so special this coming Christmas. Then I saw your email this morning and decided I should write you which I've also procrastinated on doing.

Besides De-Cluttering with little success. My biggest question/problem is that I set my timer for 15 minutes to do a job/blessing but the job is never done in that time whatever it may be, so I have trouble because then I have a bunch of half complete "jobs"/projects around the house haunting me. HELP... any suggestions?!?

Thankful for your insights and encouragement!

Dear Connie,

Fluttering is FLYing! Yes your perfectionism does put you in a rut. When you don't think you have time to do it all; YOU DO NOTHING! That is procrastination. I don't see that you have half finished jobs around your home; you have unstarted jobs that are haunting you.

In my book, Sink Reflections we talk about hitting a lick at a snake. This means doing something. You are not even getting started because you don't think you can finish. The timer is all about not hyper-focusing and burning out but it also gets you started. Unless you allow your perfectionism to stop you before you start!

I like to play games. Sometimes my timer is the starters pistol. It gets me up to do just one thing. In fact the day I took down my Christmas tree; I set my timer every 15 minutes. By the end of the day, the ornaments were in their box, the tree bagged up, put in the garage. I did this by staying consistent. I did not hyper-focus! I would get up and spend about three minutes taking ornaments off the tree. Then I would sit down till the timer went off again. You can get so much accomplished when you make it fun. I have also used this method while watching my favorite movies on the Hallmark Channel. I would get up and do something during the commercials.

We allow our brains to make us think that a job is going to take longer than it really does. Set your timer and don't think of it as a race to get it all done in 15 minutes. Pace yourself by doing 2 minutes or 5 minutes and resting for the rest of the 15 minutes. Then get up and go again.

Don't let your perfectionism keep you from doing anything!

April's Habit: Making Your Bed

April's Habit #14 I Can Make It

Dear FlyLady,

Yes, I didn't make my bed...... only me living here, so who cares?

I sleep under a duvet which I like to air in the morning anyway -- and then wouldn't remember to come back and make it later...... and besides, I have a double bed, and the unoccupied side of it was where the books I was reading before sleeping would accumulate...... and even my laptop......

But -- the last time we were in the Bedroom Zone I really cleared the bedside table on 'my' side of the bed -- and found the shelf full of notebooks, started and never filled, on all sorts of subjects -- rather disheartening!

Out they all went, to be looked at some other time, to see if anything needs to be salvaged, or do I just rip out pages and use the notebook for something else..... and in the empty shelf I now have room for what I'm currently reading, and there is also a safe place under the bed for the laptop overnight -- so all of a sudden my bed is clear and I CAN make it!

I still don't manage every day yet, but it's more often than it used to be, and looks so nice when made  Just that one simple thing, of clearing the bedside table -- and the bedroom now usually looks so much better!

Thank you!

Daily Guide and Missions

Reading the Bible Everyday

Saving Money Cooking "How to Cook" PlayList!"

I can help you get a jumpstart with my book,

The CHAOS Cure! ~FlyLady

This Week we are in Zone 3; our Main Bathroom!

This week we are focusing on the main bathroom and one extra room.

The extra room may be a second, or third bathroom, a guest bedroom, a child's bedroom, the office, or maybe the laundry room. Just pick one extra room and focus on it this week.

The bathroom: Do you live in fear that someone will actually see your bathroom? It is too easy to close our eyes to the mess that is hiding right behind the bathroom door. This week, we are going to open that door to the bathroom, and BabyStep, by BabyStep, we are going to conquer the CHAOS that is the main bathroom!

Your bathroom should give you sense of relaxation and joy when you enter. This is a place for you to pamper and take care of yourself. Treat the room with love and respect and it will bless you with comfort and peace.

Remove the obvious clutter, take out the dirty laundry, and empty the garbage can.

If your bathroom is clean but still cluttered: Start decluttering (makeup, old towels, old medicine, hair supplies, shampoos, etc.). Check out our daily missions. FlyLady usually sends out one during the week which concentrates on decluttering one small area of your bathroom.

Monday is our day to Bless Our Homes!

On Mondays, The Weekly Home Blessing hour is the time FlyLady spends blessing her home. No detailed cleaning required; vacuum the middle of the floors only! Set your timers and have fun - you are blessing your home and family!

FlyLady sets her timer for 10 minutes to work on each of 7 ways to bless your home: If you don't have 10 minutes then use our 2 Minute WHB Challenge.

  • Vacuum
  • Dust
  • Quick Mop
  • Polish Mirrors and Doors
  • Purge magazines/catalogs
  • Change Sheets
  • Empty all trash cans

You can have FlyLady coach you through the Weekly Home Blessing hour by listening to her.

This takes approximately one hour; some tasks take less than 10 minutes.

"Don't obsess, set your timer for 10 minutes for each task, then QUIT!" ~ FlyLady

For the extra Room this month, let's get in to the guest bedroom. We will continue with the 27 Fling Boogie in this room. So, set you timer for 15 minutes and start flinging!

FlyKid Mission #1 Monday

Hi Kids,

We are taking a walk! Let's walk through our houses looking for 10 things that belong in our rooms and put them away. If you have left any shoes, jackets, school things, toys or books around the house, now is the time to return them to their home.

When you leave your things around the house, it makes the house look messy. Let's grab up the things that belong in our rooms and take them there.

Five Star Review

The FlyLady is Such a Good Motivator! I Don't Cringe When People Pull Up Unannounced. I am Happy!

I highly recommended this book for any type family or single person no matter what age you or your children are. I was a fly baby for a short time years ago and recently, I found you on fb about 6 months ago. I ordered the book and have really enjoyed the revival in my heart and my house.

AMAZON

I used to cringe in agony when I would see people pull up in the driveway now I don’t. Just like Marla says the husband has started organizing and getting rid of his stuff too. The teenage boys are a work in progress. I loved the tips on , the delicate cycle, storing sheets under the bed( I’ll Have more room in my linen closet and that’s major when you are limited on closet space like us) .

The FlyLady is such a good motivator! I have found my self quoting her and singing the songs. Earlier I was cleaning and was upset about something having water spots and Marla popped in my head and said “that’s your protectionism “ and I moved on.! I so wish I would have stuck with The Flylady years ago when the kids where younger but, so glad to have her now.
