Make Your Home a Vacation Get-Away

Dear Friends,

What is it about going on vacation that makes it worth all the preparation and hassle? Is it getting away from the phone? I don't think so; most of us have our personal cell phones. Is it getting to seeing new places? Maybe but many of us usually want to go back to old familiar areas. Is it the food? It could be, or is the fact that cooking is not hard in an efficient clean kitchen.

How about the people? They are usually the same ones you have at home. So what is it about being in a different place with the same people? Could it be that the surroundings do not choke you!

Hotel rooms are sparse: Two beds, a desk, one bathroom, a night table, one small closet, a little dining table and maybe a little refrigerator. Hey I am leaving the Television and video games out. Ignore them. Let's say you rent a condo at the beach. It has a small kitchen, two to three bedrooms, a living area, a balcony, a couple of bathrooms and empty closets. The same thing for a house at the lake or a cabin in the woods; they have all the conveniences of home without ALL YOUR CLUTTER!!!

Oh it's not clutter, it is your stuff, I can hear you yelling at me. Well your stuff makes you feel like you need to leave home to breathe. So what does that tell you? Your stuff is killing you. You are uneasy in your own home. Another word for uneasy is disease. Get it?? Your house has become a storage unit for your stuff, not a home.

This is why it feels so good to walk into a sparsely decorated room. The space frees you to breathe without you feeling closed in.

How do we get this vacation feeling in our cluttered homes? By evicting Clutter and Just-in-Case forever! These things have chased you away from your home. They have taken over your residence. They are squatters and it is time to take back your home and make it your sanctuary instead of a storage unit.

Start by Crisis Cleaning: we are attacking the surface clutter that is residing in our favorite hotspots. Spend 15 minutes in the Kitchen, then 15 in the living room and then 15 in the bathroom. Then you get to rest for 15 minutes. Don't skip this step! It is the most important one.

I promise those few minutes are going to make a difference if you will get up and do it, instead of whining that 15 minutes is not enough time. The clutter will be out of sight and you will start to say to yourself that this doesn't look half bad; even if the floors are dirty. Clutter is what makes your home look awful.

Oh you still don't believe me; then do an experiment. Clear off your coffee table. I mean move everything off into a box and just stand back and look at it. How do you feel? The clean and clear is contagious. Now go put away, give away or throw away everything that is in that box.

You deserve to have a home that gives you a beautiful clean feeling. You can get that vacation get-away by taking babysteps to eliminate your clutter. Set your timer and allow that beautiful clean to put a smile on your face!

That beautiful clean is waiting for you!

Cheapest Remodel of All

Dear Friends,

We can get so stuck in a rut when our homes are in bad shape. The best remodel of all is to get rid of the clutter and start to really see your home.

Did you know that when I got my home in order with all the clutter gone that I started to love it? I mean I really liked my home even with the 70's green shag carpet. It is amazing what you can see when your eyes aren't glued to the clutter everywhere.

When clutter is on every surface you can't feel comfortable in the space. We need clear areas to feel peace. Clutter causes us to have that closed in feeling and we have to get out of our homes to feel better. Wouldn't you like to enjoy being home? Get rid of your clutter and you will find that you don't have to move to find the perfect house; you are already living in it.

I know you don't believe me, but the cheapest way to remodel your home to eliminate the clutter so you can actually see what needs to be done to spruce up your living areas. A little paint or soap and water can drastically change your outlook. With the clutter gone you can see and enjoy the forest without all the trees getting in your way. We have had FlyBabies who no longer needed to move, because all of a sudden their home got bigger without wall-to-wall clutter taking up every corner and flat surface in their home. We even have gotten an email about clearing off the magnets and paper clutter from the refrigerator. That one clutter clearing exercise made their kitchen feel larger.

Look around your home and see if you can open up some space by cleaning out a hotspot.

Some of you have complained that you don't want to clean when you have such yucky furniture. Well decorators like to call this eclectic. We have seen those TV decorators take out half the furniture and add a pillow or two and change a whole room. Did you know that you can do this too, but not until the clutter has left the building. Less is more!

We get to feeling sorry for ourselves because we can't afford this or that, when all we really need is to be happy with what we have and clean it up a bit. Don't get stuck in a rut of "ole poor me"! Count your blessings by blessing your home with a little TLC: Tender Loving Care. You have neglected it for long enough, just like you have neglected yourself.

Each day we continue to do the same things over again; washing clothes, doing dishes, folding clothes, dusting and sweeping floors. It is a never-ending procession of things that need done. When you look at these chores as work, you start to dread doing them. Change your attitude from work to blessing. When you do things for your family and to your home to help your family, you are giving them tender loving care. I like to call this blessing our home.

As you pick up a dish to wash it, be thankful that you have had food to feed your growing babies and nourish your bodies. As you fold that unending pile of laundry, your hand loves each and every member of your family. Let go of the martyred attitude and nurture your family with love and kindness. Now I am not saying that you are to do all the work. It is up to you to set the example in love and they will follow. It is all about your attitude toward your home, family, and your life.

I want you to FLY. It is hard to do if you are stuck in the muck of a pity party about the way your home looks and ultimately feels. You can change this by letting go of your victim way of thinking and put a new happy spin on your life. Blessing your home is much more fun than cleaning house!

Release Your Clutter and find your new home with the cheapest remodel of all!

April's Habit: Making Your Bed

April's Habit #21 It's Very Comforting

Dear FlyLady,

I am so happy to say that Making my Bed is the one thing that I do everyday and have done for a long time now! My one habit that I've been able to stick with! LOL

I don't let perfectionism get in the way. If one side is a little longer than the other then so be it for that day.

I do love climbing into bed each evening and I just have to pull the blanket back. It's very comforting.

I've also let go of the fact that my husband may never fix his side of the bed. LOL

It really does only take a couple seconds so I suppose I'll live! LOL  Thank you FlyCrew for all you do!

This Week we are in Zone 4; our Master Bedroom, Bathroom, and Closet!

This week we are working on Zone 4: The Master Bedroom. It also includes any bathroom you may have off the master bedroom, and whatever lurks in the bedroom closet. This will be an ongoing process. You may or may not get the entire room cleaned this week. That is not the objective. Any thing you do in this room now will be an improvement over the way it was last week. Next month you will focus on it again.

Your bedroom should be the cleanest room in your home. Many of you still use yours as a garbage/clutter disposal for the rest of the house. If your bedroom is clean and clutter free, then it becomes an inviting haven for building your relationship with your spouse. The best gift you can give your children is a strong marriage. This is true whether your children are 2 or 40 years old.

Your task is to declutter this area. Spend 15 minutes a day this week doing something, anything, in the master bedroom. It did not get dirty in a week and it will not get clean in a week, but you will be making head-way. It is a trend! Get in the habit of decluttering in small segments of time. Decide what time of day you are going to tackle this little job, set a timer for 15 minutes, and just do it.

Monday is our to Bless Our Homes!

On Mondays, The Weekly Home Blessing hour is the time FlyLady spends blessing her home. No detailed cleaning required; vacuum the middle of the floors only! Set your timers and have fun - you are blessing your home and family!

FlyLady sets her timer for 10 minutes to work on each of 7 ways to bless your home: If you don't have 10 minutes then use our 2 Minute WHB Challenge.

  • Vacuum
  • Dust
  • Quick Mop
  • Polish Mirrors and Doors
  • Purge magazines/catalogs
  • Change Sheets
  • Empty all trash cans

You can have FlyLady coach you through the Weekly Home Blessing hour by listening to her.

This takes approximately one hour; some tasks take less than 10 minutes.

"Don't obsess, set your timer for 10 minutes for each task, then QUIT!" ~ FlyLady

Zone 4 Mission #1 Monday

Dear Friends,

This week we are in the Master Bedroom, today I want you to spend 15 minutes under your bed! Take this time to get the things out from under the bed that you have shoved under there during a mad stash and dash through the house. 15 minutes might not be enough, but for today just try to put a dent in the stuff that you have put there.

Things that just don't belong. If you don't have anything under your bed, then grab a vacuum cleaner or broom and get the dust bunnies that have been multiplying under there.

FlyKid Mission #1 Monday

Hi Kids,

We are taking a walk! Let's walk through our houses looking for 10 things that belong in our rooms and put them away. If you have left any shoes, jackets, school things, toys or books around the house, now is the time to return them to their home. When you leave your things around the house, it makes the house look messy. Let's grab up the things that belong in our rooms and take them there.

Five Star Review

The FlyLady is Such a Good Motivator! I Don't Cringe When People Pull Up Unannounced. I am Happy!

I highly recommended this book for any type family or single person no matter what age you or your children are. I was a fly baby for a short time years ago and recently, I found you on fb about 6 months ago. I ordered the book and have really enjoyed the revival in my heart and my house.

AMAZON

I used to cringe in agony when I would see people pull up in the driveway now I don’t. Just like Marla says the husband has started organizing and getting rid of his stuff too. The teenage boys are a work in progress. I loved the tips on , the delicate cycle, storing sheets under the bed( I’ll Have more room in my linen closet and that’s major when you are limited on closet space like us) .

The FlyLady is such a good motivator! I have found my self quoting her and singing the songs. Earlier I was cleaning and was upset about something having water spots and Marla popped in my head and said “that’s your protectionism “ and I moved on.! I so wish I would have stuck with The Flylady years ago when the kids where younger but, so glad to have her now.
