The Cheapest Remodel of All

Dear Friends,

We can get so stuck in a rut when our homes are in bad shape. The best remodel of all is to get rid of the clutter and start to really see your home.

Did you know that when I got my home in order with all the clutter gone that I started to love it? I mean I really liked my home even with the 70's green shag carpet. It is amazing what you can see when your eyes aren't glued to the clutter everywhere.

When clutter is on every surface you can't feel comfortable in the space. We need clear areas to feel peace. Clutter causes us to have that closed in feeling and we have to get out of our homes to feel better. Wouldn't you like to enjoy being home? Get rid of your clutter and you will find that you don't have to move to find the perfect house; you are already living in it.

I know you don't believe me, but the cheapest way to remodel your home to eliminate the clutter so you can actually see what needs to be done to spruce up your living areas. A little paint or soap and water can drastically change your outlook. With the clutter gone you can see and enjoy the forest without all the trees getting in your way. We have had FlyBabies who no longer needed to move, because all of a sudden their home got bigger without wall-to-wall clutter taking up every corner and flat surface in their home. We even have gotten an email about clearing off the magnets and paper clutter from the refrigerator. That one clutter clearing exercise made their kitchen feel larger.

Look around your home and see if you can open up some space by cleaning out a hotspot.

Some of you have complained that you don't want to clean when you have such yucky furniture. Well decorators like to call this eclectic. We have seen those TV decorators take out half the furniture and add a pillow or two and change a whole room. Did you know that you can do this too, but not until the clutter has left the building. Less is more!

We get to feeling sorry for ourselves because we can't afford this or that, when all we really need is to be happy with what we have and clean it up a bit. Don't get stuck in a rut of "ole poor me"! Count your blessings by blessing your home with a little TLC: Tender Loving Care. You have neglected it for long enough, just like you have neglected yourself.

Each day we continue to do the same things over again; washing clothes, doing dishes, folding clothes, dusting and sweeping floors. It is a never-ending procession of things that need done. When you look at these chores as work, you start to dread doing them. Change your attitude from work to blessing. When you do things for your family and to your home to help your family, you are giving them tender loving care. I like to call this blessing our home. As you pick up a dish to wash it, be thankful that you have had food to feed your growing babies and nourish your bodies. As you fold that unending pile of laundry, your hand loves each and every member of your family. Let go of the martyred attitude and nurture your family with love and kindness. Now I am not saying that you are to do all the work. It is up to you to set the example in love and they will follow. It is all about your attitude toward your home, family, and your life.

I want you to FLY. It is hard to do if you are stuck in the muck of a pity party about the way your home looks and ultimately feels. You can change this by letting go of your victim way of thinking and put a new happy spin on your life. Blessing your home is much more fun than cleaning house!

Release Your Clutter and find your new home with the cheapest remodel of all!

Why Do We Get Stuck in Paper

Hi FlyLady!

I just signed up for your emails. I related to the one that just came in about a person who greeted everyone outside because of the embarrassment involved in letting someone see the inside.

Last night I did a 27-fling with paper, having read one that was sent out to the FlyKids group the other day. I thought I needed that.

I saw that you wanted new questions. This is probably one you've been asked a million times...

Why does it take a person so long to decide what to keep and what to throw away? Why do we get stuck? Why is it so agonizing to throw something away? To make a decision, even a little one? My head knows things need to go but then I don't do it with ease.

Thanks for your advice and your work to encourage so many to live free.

Mara

Dear Mara,

The simple answer is that we are fearful that we are going to make a mistake. In other words, it is our perfectionism. We hold on to papers for the same fear. We are scared that those papers may be stolen and our identity compromised.

A lot of times we have cleared off hot spots and placed all those papers in a basket to hurriedly get ready for company. You all know where your stash and dash places are. Many FlyBabies use their side of the bed or the closet to hide these piles of papers. When we are in a hurry to clear a table or counter; we don't know what is hiding in those piles. It is our fear of throwing something away that we might need one day that stands in the way of making the decision.

Decisions are much easier to make when you handle a piece of paper as it comes into the house. This means dealing with the mail before it becomes a hot spot. I recommend is getting a shredder. One of our members has a shredder in her garage and she shreds all the mail that is not worthy to come into her home.

I have a real fireplace and I use our junk mail as kindling for our fires. It is a wonderful way to eliminate those credit card applications and other identity sensitive mail. You can do this too with the popularity of an outdoor fire pit. Before you burn anything make sure that it is safe to ignite a fire. You may have to get a burn permit.

At the office, we hire a company to come and do industrial shredding. We keep seven years of our personal and business records.

If you still have bags of paper clutter; we can help you to eliminate it in babysteps. Set your timer for 15 minutes. Pick up one piece of paper and deal with it. Decide if it is trash and needs to be shredded or burned or if you need to keep it. Those are the only two options. Going through a little pile of paper clutter each day will eventually help you to eliminate those heavy burdens. Dealing with the paper clutter when it comes in the mail each day will stop you from accumulating those bags of paper. Placing your bills that need to be paid in your Office in a Bag, keeps you from having to search for them in a Hot Spot, when it is time to pay them. This saves you time and relieves your stress.

No more fear!

April's Habit: Making Your Bed

April's Habit #3 I've Now Mastered

Dear FlyLady,

The habit for this month of making your bed I'm delighted to say I've now mastered.

I've decided that instead of having a month off. LOL I'm going to change habit of the month for me and go back to 'decluttering for 15 minutes a day', can't wait to see the difference this will make by the end of the month.

My home is already getting good with the clutter that could be seen but now it's time to delve into cupboards, wardrobes, perhaps even the loft!

Thanks for your encouragement Claire, UK

I can help you get a jumpstart with my book,

The CHAOS Cure! ~FlyLady

This Week we are in Zone 1; our Entrance, Front Porch, and Dining Room!

This week our Zone is very important to our homes. The entrance to our homes make the first impression on our guests, our family and ourselves. When we walk into a clean and tidy home our whole attitude will be uplifted. This puts a smile of pride on our faces. We have gone so long, looking at such a terrible mess, that we have been ashamed to answer the door. I want you to get rid of guilt that accompanies clutter and CHAOS. To do this you have to get off your franny and start to declutter this area.

Your task is to declutter this area. Spend 15 minutes a day this week doing something, anything, in these rooms. They did not get dirty in a week and they will not get clean in a week, but you will be making headway. It is a trend! Get in the habit of decluttering in small segments of time. Decide what time of day you are going to tackle this little job, set a timer for 15 minutes, and just do it.

Thursday is our Errand Day so we don't have to on Saturday!

Thursday at FlyLady is Errand Day. We use this day to get out and run whatever errands we need to do for the week. Make a list of wherever you need to go and whatever you need to do during the day today and then get to it. Please be safe out there. This can include:

  • Grocery shopping
  • Doctor appointments
  • Dentist appointments
  • Dropping the clothes off at the cleaner
  • Dropping of clutter donations

And tons of other things. If it needs to be done outside the house, today is the day to do it. Make a list of these things and check them off as you do them.

Zone 1: Mission #4 Thursday

Dear Friends:

Today I want you to spend 15 minutes getting rid of anything that does not belong on your porch or front entrance way. Things that have gotten thrown in a corner, along the wall, or even on the floor. The things that you almost don't even see because they have just become part of the space. If it does not belong there, then out it goes!

This does not mean that you have to spend three hours in your porch, do what you can do for 15 minutes.

FlyKid Mission #4 Thursday

Hi Kids!

We are taking a walk! Let's walk through our houses looking for 10 things that belong in our rooms and put them away. If you have left any shoes, jackets, school things, toys or books around the house, now is the time to return them to their home. When you leave your things around the house, it makes the house look messy. Let's grab up the things that belong in our rooms and take them there.

I am willing to bet that Mom or Dad will be so surprised and so proud of you!

Five Star Review

The FlyLady is Such a Good Motivator! I Don't Cringe When People Pull Up Unannounced. I am Happy!

I highly recommended this book for any type family or single person no matter what age you or your children are. I was a fly baby for a short time years ago and recently, I found you on fb about 6 months ago. I ordered the book and have really enjoyed the revival in my heart and my house.

AMAZON

I used to cringe in agony when I would see people pull up in the driveway now I don’t. Just like Marla says the husband has started organizing and getting rid of his stuff too. The teenage boys are a work in progress. I loved the tips on , the delicate cycle, storing sheets under the bed( I’ll Have more room in my linen closet and that’s major when you are limited on closet space like us) .

The FlyLady is such a good motivator! I have found my self quoting her and singing the songs. Earlier I was cleaning and was upset about something having water spots and Marla popped in my head and said “that’s your protectionism “ and I moved on.! I so wish I would have stuck with The Flylady years ago when the kids where younger but, so glad to have her now.
