Routines will Work for Everyone

Dear Friends,

One of the very first things that you learn on this group is that no whining is allowed; Period: End of Sentence.

We are always being asked: Well I work outside the home, I stay at home full time, I work at home, I care for an aging parent, I have a special needs child, I am a single parent, I am pregnant, I have multiple children, I home school: What can you tell me to do?

Bottom line here folks is this: ROUTINES WORK FOR EVERYONE!! No matter what your situation is, routines WILL help you.

You have to have a morning and evening routine. Think about school children, they have the exact same routines EVERY morning when they get to class. ROUTINES WORK! Routines keep you from getting sidetracked and keep your mornings and evenings consistent.

It doesn't matter one single bit that you have a situation that you think makes you different or special than anyone else. You are all here because you have one main issue and that is that your homes and lives are out of control. We can help you tame them but you have to stop making excuses. Yes, I just said excuses and before I take this any further I am not trying to hurt anyone's feelings or offend anyone. I am merely pointing out that each of you will benefit from routines and your situation no matter how hard it is or sad or whatever will change that.

No one ever believes that any one else has it as difficult as they do. This is called "the Grass is Always Greener" syndrome. But if the truth be known no one would trade places with anyone else because each one of us has our own set of difficulties. All of you have issues, this does not mean that you get a special order custom made system just for you. Our system works for everyone. You have to take BabySteps and not expect instant over night success. We do not promise you that. We promise if you follow what we tell you that you will see progress. Your home did not get dirty overnight and will not get clean in a day. With routines and our guidance you will get there.

NOW, what should you be doing? At the very minimum for a morning routine: Get dressed all the way to shoes (hair and face), swish and swipe the bathroom and make your bed. At the very minimum for an evening routine: get clothes ready for the next day, brush teeth/wash face and shine your sink. This is a very abbreviated version of routines to get you started. Don't minimize that you think this is not enough, it is more than most of you are actually doing. We have thousands of testimonials that will tell you this works. You have to make a commitment that no matter what your personal situation is that routines can and will work. No matter how small.

You might have to be creative, you might have to adapt but you can find a way to make routines fit your life if you are really ready to FLY.

My Bedroom is Where I Struggle Most

Dear FlyLady,

I’m a new FlyBaby so please forgive me for not thoroughly knowing your system! I notice the task of the day is making our beds every morning. My bedroom is truly were I struggle the most! It’s just the perfect catch all place for everything. It’s just horrible. I hate even going in there and I hate that I sound like a teenager writing this post. After cleaning the house and my toddler’s bedroom all day, the master bedroom is at the very bottom of the list.

So where do I start? When do I start? Please give me some words of wisdom. I would love to have a cozy oasis for my Husband and I to retreat to at the end of the day.

I’m off to go buy some lace up shoes to start next week off on the right foot!

Thank you so much!

Sincerely,

Katy

Dear Katy,

Our bedrooms have long been a major dumping ground for us when company is coming. We grab up our hotspots and toss them on the other side of our bed. Then we lock the door from the inside and that stops anyone from going in there.

These type of actions are a result of not loving ourselves! We put ourselves last. I want your bedroom to be the most peaceful room in your home!

This week we are going to babystep our way to a restful bedroom! Let's start by clearing out the clutter that is standing in your way of a restful sleep!

Let's look at your flat surfaces.

  1. Dresser: What is on your dresser top?
  2. Bed: Do you have clothes pile on your bed?
  3. Night Stand: Is your night stand filled up with stuff?
  4. Desk: Do you have a desk in your bedroom? Is it messy?
  5. Exercise Machine: Has it become a Clothes Horse?
  6. Chest of Drawer: Is every drawer filled with clothes you don't wear?
  7. Floor: Is the floor on the opposite side of you bed piled high with stuff!
  8. Under your bed: Do you store stuff under your bed? Stop this! Declutter
  9. Floors/Carpet: Is your carpet dirty? or the floors dirty?
  10. Closet: Is your closet filled with trash bags of paper?
  11. Bathroom: Is your shower used as a storage unit?

I know where you are stashing items! Let this be your wake up call to make your bedroom a place of peace!

April's Habit: Making Your Bed

April's Habit #24 Stay Positive

Dear FlyLady,

I've been getting your emails and trying to fly for several years... sometimes successfully and sometimes not so much! But I try to stay positive and I know that even the little strides I make are really important.

I live in a two story home with all the bedrooms upstairs so beds very rarely get made. I always figure "Nobody's going up there anyway!" But over the last year I've been wanting to re-do my bedroom... after all I've had the same furniture and décor for nearly 20 years and it's time for a change.

So I've been picking up little things here and there to spruce up my bedroom - a new duvet cover, a pretty little pillow, brand spanking new sheets, some cute photo frames, a new throw rug, etc. Well, I've had these things sitting in my closet for nearly a year because I didn't want to use them until I repainted so everything would match... none of it would match my old green walls! And to make matters worse I've had the new paint for at least 6 months but never got around to painting.

Well, I finally decided that I was tired of looking at that old bed! So I washed my new sheets and duvet cover and made up my bed all pretty with decorative pillows and all! So what if it doesn't match my walls... I'll get to it eventually.

I've been making my bed every morning because it just looks so pretty all made up. And it makes me smile every night when I climb into bed. It was really tough but I had to let go of my perfectionism and thinking that everything had to be done right now.

Thank you for being that little voice in my head telling me that I'm not behind... and that everything doesn't have to be perfect.

Flying in South Florida

PS Maybe I'll start painting this weekend!

I can help you get a jumpstart with my book,

The CHAOS Cure! ~FlyLady

This Week we are in Zone 4; our Master Bedroom, Bathroom, and Closet!

This week we are working on Zone 4: The Master Bedroom. It also includes any bathroom you may have off the master bedroom, and whatever lurks in the bedroom closet. This will be an ongoing process. You may or may not get the entire room cleaned this week. That is not the objective. Any thing you do in this room now will be an improvement over the way it was last week. Next month you will focus on it again.

Your bedroom should be the cleanest room in your home. Many of you still use yours as a garbage/clutter disposal for the rest of the house. If your bedroom is clean and clutter free, then it becomes an inviting haven for building your relationship with your spouse. The best gift you can give your children is a strong marriage. This is true whether your children are 2 or 40 years old.

Your task is to declutter this area. Spend 15 minutes a day this week doing something, anything, in the master bedroom. It did not get dirty in a week and it will not get clean in a week, but you will be making head-way. It is a trend! Get in the habit of decluttering in small segments of time. Decide what time of day you are going to tackle this little job, set a timer for 15 minutes, and just do it.

Thursday is our day to run some errands!

Thursday at FlyLady is Errand Day. We use this day to get out and run whatever errands we need to do for the week. Make a list of wherever you need to go and whatever you need to do during the day today and then get to it. Please be safe out there. This can include:

  • Grocery shopping
  • Doctor appointments
  • Dentist appointments
  • Dropping the clothes off at the cleaner
  • Dropping of clutter donations

And tons of other things. If it needs to be done outside the house, today is the day to do it. Make a list of these things and check them off as you do them.

Zone 4 Mission #4 Thursday

Dear Friends,

Yesterday we worked on the nightstands and today we are going after the dressers! Get rid of anything that is not necessary! Instead of a pile up of cosmetics, place them in a ziplock bag and then store them in a drawer when not in use. For perfumes and colognes, toss what you no longer use and place you favorites on a pretty tray, plate or mirror. Keep this space neat and clutter free, you will love to wake up to the flat surfaces in your bedroom decluttered.

FlyKid Mission #4 Thursday

Hi Kids,

Today we are going to declutter the tops of our dressers. You know how we can just pile things on our dressers and they start to get cluttered and messy? Today we are going to fix that! Let's set a timer for 10 minutes and see what we can get done!

If you have things that need to be put away, put them away, if you have things that need to be thrown away - throw them away! I bet all of you can do this really fast, I think that all of you will be able to do this in less than 10 minutes! Have Fun!

Five Star Review

The FlyLady is Such a Good Motivator! I Don't Cringe When People Pull Up Unannounced. I am Happy!

I highly recommended this book for any type family or single person no matter what age you or your children are. I was a fly baby for a short time years ago and recently, I found you on fb about 6 months ago. I ordered the book and have really enjoyed the revival in my heart and my house.

AMAZON

I used to cringe in agony when I would see people pull up in the driveway now I don’t. Just like Marla says the husband has started organizing and getting rid of his stuff too. The teenage boys are a work in progress. I loved the tips on , the delicate cycle, storing sheets under the bed( I’ll Have more room in my linen closet and that’s major when you are limited on closet space like us) .

The FlyLady is such a good motivator! I have found my self quoting her and singing the songs. Earlier I was cleaning and was upset about something having water spots and Marla popped in my head and said “that’s your protectionism “ and I moved on.! I so wish I would have stuck with The Flylady years ago when the kids where younger but, so glad to have her now.
