A Brighter Shade of Purple

Dear Friends,

Going green doesn't have to cost us green money. We are very bright and each of us has come up with great ways to save money and FLY!

Everyone is dealing with this shutdown. Did you know that when you are FLYing you are saving money and helping the environment? I want to discuss some of these money saving green/purple habits we can help you establish.

Decluttering 15 minutes a day! How can this save you money; I know you are thinking this? The act of decluttering makes you more particular about what you buy and bring into your home. This amazing thing happens because you begin to love yourself and the way your home looks. You have to really need something to buy it! Shopping becomes something you do because you don't need a diversion from being at home feeling guilty about your clutter and all the stuff you buy because it is on sale. If you did not spend $20 a week on more clutter then you would have saved $1040 a year. This doesn't even count the money you spend on the gas to run around and buy the clutter. Buying less reduces your carbon footprint. It also reduces your trash and landfills.

Picking out your clothes as part of your before bed routine! This simple action will give you more time in the morning so you can fix your breakfast and a cup of coffee before you head off to work. No more stopping for expensive drive thru breakfasts and designer coffees. You have to pleasure of a peaceful morning with your life under control along with your finances. If you spend $5 a day on a drive thru breakfast and a coffee then you could have saved $1300 in a year. Pulling out and trying on creates piles of clothes and those clothes get mixed up with your dirty clothes and then you use more water to wash them.

Planning your menus for next week and preparing a grocery list before you go shopping can help too. This keeps you from going to the grocery store multiple times each week. This alone can save you $50 a week. There is hardly anyway to keep from spending less than that each time you go to the store. If you are cooking then you are saving more money by not getting takeout from restaurants. That could alone could save you another $25 a week. This amounts to $3900 for a year. Then if you factor in the gas you save by only going to the grocery store once each week. Less gas used, buying fresh food instead of packaged also helps reduce our trash.

Wearing good shoes for your feet help in lots of ways! Good shoes gives you more energy and keeps you from breaking toes and cutting your precious feet. More energy helps you to exercise more and take better care of yourself; this saves on doctor bills. One co-pay for an office visit could save you $20 a month. A broken foot could set you back $1500 for an emergency room visit. Shoes save you more than you would ever think about. $1740 is amazing when a good pair of shoes could runs around $50. What an investment! This doesn't even count the money you save because of the energy you have to keep your home in order. More energy means more walking instead of driving.

Next let's look at how much you save by paying your bills on time and not running up your credit cards. One late charge a month or an over draft fee could run into $100 dollars a month. If there is one there are usually many. You are having to rob Peter to pay Paul. Stay on top of your bills and paying things on time is a major way to save money while FLYing! $1200 is a small amount to save when we examine what we really spend in those fees and interest rates. I haven't even figured the cost of the fuel for all those extra trips to the grocery store, to pay a bill before the power gets turned off, doctor visits and fast food trips. Besides the more you go shopping the more you spend. Fewer trips to the store will keep your bills affordable and you have not put that gas into your car and the pollution into the atmosphere.

So you see with these five simple habits you can save lots of money and help the environment. $9180 is no chump change to me. That is more money than I made some years in my career as a furniture store bookkeeper. That is $176 a week. WOW! Now that will buy you a tank a gas with some money for savings and something simple for you as a celebration!

FLYing makes good financial sense especially when the cost of gas is robbing us. We have been stealing from ourselves for a very long time with our SHEness. We can FLY and save money and the environment at the same time.

Taking Advantage of the Rain Water

Dear FlyLady,

After caring for my husband who died from cancer several months ago, my house is in sad shape. I’m still trying to establish a “new normal,” and am encouraged every day with your emails.

My bedroom has a bay window with a tree right outside. Pollen had accumulated on the window, preventing a clear view. After a recent rain when the window was wet, I took my new mop that I had moistened with plain water, and within 5 minutes, my window was shining. I was so impressed that I have ordered one for each of my 3 adult children, along with the multi-wand.

Thank you for exceptional tools to help make our lives easier.

April's Habit: Making Your Bed

April's Habit #22 This Habit Has Changed Me

Dear FlyLady,

I've never been one to make my bed.

When I get up in the mornings, I usually close my bedroom door and just ignore the unkept bed and clutter. I've been getting your emails for over a year. When I first started out, I was doing my daily routines daily. I stuck with it for months.

Then we moved, I found out I was pregnant, and we had a ton of work to do on our new home all in a month. I fell off the wagon. Our beautiful baby girl was born via C-Section five short weeks ago.

During my recovery time, our house was a disaster! Our older two children tried to help out as much as possible, but the majority of the work fell on me since dh works very long hours 7 days a week - and I was simply too exhausted and in too much pain to do much of anything. I recently got back on the wagon.

The habit of making my bed has changed me!

I don't make my bed as soon as I get up, but I make sure I get it made as soon as I get home from dropping the kids off at school. After making my bed, I feel more encouraged to get other tasks done after completing my morning routine. My dh is enjoying it as well. He loves climbing into a nicely made bed every night. And I'm sleeping better as well - well, when the newborn allows it.

Thanks so much, FlyLady!!

The CHAOS Cure! ~FlyLady

This Week we are in Zone 4; our Master Bedroom, Bathroom, and Closet!

This week we are working on Zone 4: The Master Bedroom. It also includes any bathroom you may have off the master bedroom, and whatever lurks in the bedroom closet. This will be an ongoing process. You may or may not get the entire room cleaned this week. That is not the objective. Any thing you do in this room now will be an improvement over the way it was last week. Next month you will focus on it again.

Your bedroom should be the cleanest room in your home. Many of you still use yours as a garbage/clutter disposal for the rest of the house. If your bedroom is clean and clutter free, then it becomes an inviting haven for building your relationship with your spouse. The best gift you can give your children is a strong marriage. This is true whether your children are 2 or 40 years old.

Your task is to declutter this area. Spend 15 minutes a day this week doing something, anything, in the master bedroom. It did not get dirty in a week and it will not get clean in a week, but you will be making head-way. It is a trend! Get in the habit of decluttering in small segments of time. Decide what time of day you are going to tackle this little job, set a timer for 15 minutes, and just do it.

Tuesday is our to Plan and Play!

On Tuesdays, We take some time out to Plan our week. Planning means taking time to look at next week and see what we can do to make things easier for us during the next week. Here are some things we can do to plan:

  • Menu planning
  • Activities planning
  • Date Night and Family Fun Time planning
  • Wardrobe planning
  • Checking prescriptions to see what needs to be refilled
  • And anything else you might need to plan. There are tons of things we can do to save ourselves time later!

We also get to have lots of fun on Tuesdays. This is where the play part comes from. When our planning is finished, we get to go play! Spend the rest of the day doing something fun just for you. See that movie you've been wanting to see, take a long bath with a good book, or get out and have some fun at the gym. Whatever makes you happy! This is all about you.

Zone 4 Mission #2 Tuesday

Dear Friends,

Today is the day to attack the clothes pile. Now you all know what I am talking about. This pile is either on a chair, on top of the hamper, dresser or at the foot of your bed. Set your timer for 15 minutes and grab some hangers or start folding. While you are doing this do not hang up or fold something that you hate. This is the time to let it go! If you do not love it, send it right out the door!

FlyKid Mission #2 Tuesday

Hi Kids,

Today we are going to do something that might be hard but that is okay. You can do this! You are going to go look in your rooms for 11 toys that are either broken or missing pieces that need to be thrown away. Get a trash bag and toss them!

Five Star Review

The FlyLady is Such a Good Motivator! I Don't Cringe When People Pull Up Unannounced. I am Happy!

I highly recommended this book for any type family or single person no matter what age you or your children are. I was a fly baby for a short time years ago and recently, I found you on fb about 6 months ago. I ordered the book and have really enjoyed the revival in my heart and my house.

AMAZON

I used to cringe in agony when I would see people pull up in the driveway now I don’t. Just like Marla says the husband has started organizing and getting rid of his stuff too. The teenage boys are a work in progress. I loved the tips on , the delicate cycle, storing sheets under the bed( I’ll Have more room in my linen closet and that’s major when you are limited on closet space like us) .

The FlyLady is such a good motivator! I have found my self quoting her and singing the songs. Earlier I was cleaning and was upset about something having water spots and Marla popped in my head and said “that’s your protectionism “ and I moved on.! I so wish I would have stuck with The Flylady years ago when the kids where younger but, so glad to have her now.
